Rules change: early announcement
Let it be known in the Hattrick community, that passing skill, which currently do not matter for defenders, will under certain circumstances be slightly useful to defenders. It will only be useful to those who deliberately choose a certain option, and only to a VERY limited extent. It will not be necessary in any way unless you chose that option. The change will take place "fairly soon". More detailed information will NOT be given any other place than on this page (please do not mail and ask).

Maybe one of the HT vets can help me out here, what effect will this have on defensive trainers? Will it be important to maybe throw a little passing training in with the defender training? Is it still just way to early to tell what kind of effect this will have?
Since I am new to hattrick I have never seen a rule change like this before, will the passing only take effect with a new special order or something along those line?

I'm going to guess it has to do with playing them offensively but that's just a guess. No one on the conferences is really sure right now. The main concern is that people will just hang back with a 5-4-1, not allow any scores and just wait for a scoring event.

It won't be any more beneficial than throwing in passing training if you are training scoring (actually probably less). So it probably won't have an effect on much of anything training wise.

Currently passing doesnt matter at all for defenders? Thats silly IMO. I always thought it would help when advancing the ball from the defense to the midfield.

It sounds to me like the effect will be very small. If that is the case, then the benefits from a week's worth of defensive training will probably be more valuable that a week's worth of passing training.

Of course, someone could decide to train pass-specialist defenders.

I'm keen on the idea of passing being a more important attribute than it currently is. I know with regards to counter-attacking, passing is very valuable in soccer, but the Hattrick engine seems to be a bit behind the times. Hopefully this will be one of many changes in the near future where lesser-used attributes will have more of an impact.

That in combination with lowering the dominance of midfield would be pretty nice. Although I'd expect a whole lot of bitching to occur. :)

If they do that, they need to make offense worth more. Or count all playmaking on the field towards possession. Last thing hattrick needs is everyone switching to 4-5-1 and 5-4-1 for those huge 1-0 slugfests. That's just bad for business.

I agree. That would be why I said "in combination" with what meanstrosity said. Of course, I also think they need to bring defensive grades more in tune with offensive grades. As far as I can see in conference, teams with insanely rated defense are getting score on far more than I would think you should expect to see from one that is rated as such. Not to mention how experience is handed out, if they intend to incorporate it into the game more.

As much as it sounds like I'm thrashing the game, these are more nitpicks than complaints [ie, I don't think they break the game as much as I think they're parts that can stand improvements]. I dig the game tremendously as is but that doesn't mean it can't be improved. :)

Agreed Daedalus. If they could mix and match the HT engine with the CM engine...we'd be IN BUSINESS!!! The middies and playmaking are much too important in this game, but it looks like the HT guys are going to put a wrinkle in that formula. Anything that can give the managers a bit more 'creative control' is good in my opinion.

Actually, the passing of forwards and, to a lesser degree, inner mids plays quite a role in attack ratings. Most people just don't realize this since it isn't that common to have a forward with solid passing. However I would say a solid scorer with solid passing would be better than an excellent scorer with poor passing.

I'm going to GUESS that based on the reference to "choosing a certain option" that long balls/through balls from defense will be implemented. Presumably, it would not be related to positioning or the defender's rating itself, but rather a check box which if you use it, your defenders would try through balls to the forwards.

Of course, there needs to be a "negative" to this, which might be weakened defense and/or possible loss of possession (afterall, in real life, teams that play many long balls might get a few scoring chances, but generally just give up possession).

I could be TOTALLY wrong on this, but that's what I'm guessing. It likely won't affect defense training ANY, but might have the affect of SLIGHTLY weakening the importance of midfield (if the attacks can be generated via the defense, rather than through midfield possession)

I still think passing needs a bit more of a 'bump' than that. No doubt that it plays a role, I just think it should play an expanded role.

Passing is probably the most critical aspect in competitive soccer today for winning teams. And as they continue to tweak the HT engine, it's beginning to look more like real soccer in that the focus will be more on the team than on the individuals. You can have the ultimate scorer, but if no one can get him the ball...he's going to be an awfully expensive hood ornament for your team. It shall be very entertaining watching the match engine continue to be improved and become more realistic.
