I've been pleasantly surprised that some sites are actually engaging in a conversation about the representation of women in GTA V (see Polygon). There's also a conversation about how the player must participate in torture and whether this is actually appropriate, even by GTA standards (see Eurogamer). Maybe the game review press is actually moving out of dudebro mode and growing up a bit. No matter where a person comes out on these issues, just having these types of conversations seems like a step in the right direction if we want to take the medium more seriously as an artform.

I posted in the 2013 Video games thread.. this is going to be the climax game of this generation of consoles. It's at a 98 at metacritic last time I looked.

Grabbing it tomorrow for sure. :)

I ordered it from Walmart.com since I wanted the special edition and by the time I got around to ordering it, Best Buy and Gamestop didn't have it available anymore. Never done Walmart before so I'm a little nervous it won't get here.

I'll be walking into a Wal-Mart at midnight, for the very first time, to hopefully pick this up! Crossing my fingers that my 8 year old 360 can run it. Is there any difference between my old 360 (other than storage - it has only 450mb space) and say a brand new one off the shelf today?

Only took 45 minutes to install not too bad.

Drove past a Gamestop on the way to Walmart, there must have been at least 200 hundred people lined up just outside the store. Got to Walmart and walked straight up to the counter and bought it. Suckas!

The largest DDoS attack to date is somewhere in the range of 200 Gbps, right? If 1 million people opted for the PSN download to play today, that's a sustained combined load that would near 1100 Gbps.

I did my first heist mission, which was a blast. You pick from a couple of options on how you'd like to handle it, and then you also pick from a number of candidates to be along in your crew. Very fun experience.

GTA V Cements PS3 As Lead Platform (http://www.gamerevolution.com/manifesto/gta-v-cements-ps3-as-lead-platform-20307)

Face-Off: Grand Theft Auto 5 • Face offs • Eurogamer.net (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-grand-theft-auto-5-face-off)

Grand Theft Auto 5: the Digital Foundry verdict
At last, Rockstar North's monstrous open-world caper is here in all its glory - but after five years and an estimated £170 million being sunk into development and marketing, which version is the one to buy? After playing both versions extensively and amassing over 2TB of lossless video to analyse, we must stress that you're bound to have a fantastic time with either take. Lighting and physics engines are fully intact on both versions, and the minor differences in reflection mapping go down as nitpicks. At its core, both PS3 and 360 present the same massive Los Angeles-inspired sprawl via the same 720p native resolution lens, with almost entirely identical effects and object detail.

However, it's apparent that the PS3 version has an undeniable advantage in one area: even to the naked eye, ground textures on 360 are blurred as a result of what appears to be unoptimised asset streaming. Glitch or not, this basically amounts to concrete and grass textures appearing fuzzier beneath the feet of Trevor, Michael or Franklin, while the PS3 version's remain crystal clear. The 360 does command a minor advantage in frame-rate during synchronised play, but for shoot-outs and high-speed hurtles down the city streets, the PS3 can sometimes pull ahead in these metrics - though the difference is rarely perceptible either way. Since all else is identical across the board, the PS3 version is recommended on the grounds of image quality if you have the option.

Grand Theft Auto 5 easily counts as the most feature-rich and eye-catching sandbox title of the current generation to our minds, though the silence on the as-yet unannounced PC and next-gen releases is deafening. Adaptations must surely be in the running - and doubtless these would be bolstered by smoother performance and higher-grade effects afforded by more muscular hardware. But that's perhaps missing the point; with so much heist-plotting content crammed into one package, and with an intriguing 16-player online mode yet to be patched in, there's no time like the present to enjoy Los Santos' delights on the platforms you already own.

Wish I could figure out how to make a new car my character's default. After Michael loses his first car, I picked up some lame 4 door sedan and parked it in the garage just to have a car.

Later, I finally found a sweet sports car, souped it up to the max, and also parked it in the garage (the sedan now sat in the driveway.) To make sure I kept that car, I drove the sedan into a wall and left it.

However, now both of these cars are in Michael's property, with the crappy sedan in the driveway and the souped up one in the garage. And, to make matters worse, when switching over from another character to Michael's, he's always out somewhere driving the shitty car.

I've read elsewhere that there are problems with the PSN download that are the same as the 360 with installing both discs. Looks like the game was optimized to read data from both the hard drive and disc to make up for slow read times and lack of RAM on both systems, meaning if you're just using a hard drive things are going to load slower.

I've experienced FAR worse from brides or mothers of brides on multiple occasions. It doesn't matter how bad their behavior is. If it's bad, people know it. There's no need to do what she did to point it out. Just let him go and realize that everyone else knows how stupid he was to act as he did.

You have to have thick skin in those situations and take a deep breath if you know you're going to react in an adverse way. I think my 12 years of umpiring competitive fast-pitch softball trained me well how to let just about anything go.

The way I always handled customers when I worked at CCBill was to treat the assholes with respect and speak calmly until they showed they were unable to be rational. Then I would just hang up. The good customers, the ones who understood that things can sometimes go wrong, the ones who were patient and calm... Those people usually got more than an average customer would have gotten when it came to my effort and any possible refunds, etc.

The way my fiancee handles customers at her hotel is she simply tells the assholes to leave. You'd be amazed how often she has to do that, but I attribute it to the type of people that tend to come in since her hotel is one that gets a lot of overflow from the nearby casino. The "high rollers" are generally the ones that are the biggest assholes, too. They're getting a free room that normally goes for 90 bucks a night and they still whine and complain when they don't get free upgrades to whirlpool suites, etc.

So to sum up, IMO the customer is fairly often quite wrong. (not that fairly often is that often anyway.. Maybe 1% or so?)

I genuinely think there are customers that are better to steer towards your competitors because they cost more than they bring in so they actually are a net loss to your business.

And that's before we get into the ones who are good customers but are unequally burdened by something you have to do across the board: think the "good kid" who has to abide by the curfew that you created because of the "bad kid".

Yeah, the inability for microwaves to be kept in rooms is a hindrance that wasn't a hindrance before idiots en masse started breaking them or just outright stealing them.

As for the game, I am enjoying watching playthroughs of it quite a bit. It's a busy game, but I don't feel like anything is forced or constrained by time, which is awesome. I'm hoping to find a video of someone simply driving around the map showing off landmarks and whatnot just to get a feel for the vastness of it all.

I always liked how Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest Airlines, would make it a point to respond to letters where the customer was in the wrong or went over the line. He would send them a letter stating that the customer isn't always right, and for a boss to assume so is a disservice to his employees. They are welcome to take their business elsewhere, and if so they would certainly miss their business.

I love this. The last time I actually complained was when I was jipped and then treated like shit in a Subway. Moral of the story, they had a buy one get one $3 sub special. What they made me was a six inch sub and cut it in half. When i questioned the policy about $12 foot long subs the manager decided to insult me. I shot off an email to corporate and they personally called me to let me know exactly how in the wrong I was.

12....12 dollar....12 dollar foot long....pretty sure that isn't how the the song goes.

What did they tell you?

If you really insist. I always start to story with the last lines of conversation from the woman who called me and myself.

Subway rep: "I just wanted to get in touch with you to let you know that you were wrong."

Me: "Whatever."

-End of call

The gist of the roughly three minute convo was:

1. She wasn't going to answer any questions I had. She had already done all the fact finding she needed to do. She didn't want me to ask any questions. I was wrong. That was all she wanted to let me know.

2. I escalated the situation with the manager by wrongly accusing her of selling $12 foot long turkey sandwiches.

3. I purchased a $3, 3 inch turkey sandwich and I was given a 3 inch turkey sandwich for free. That was the deal that was offered and it was the deal that I was given.

EDIT: And before this gets any further off track. It was not the deal that was offered. To my knowledge they don't even sell 3 inch subs, and they definitely don't sell $12 foot longs.

TRO

They definitely sell 3 inch subs. That is typically their kid size. Of course, I don't believe it costs $3 for one of these either.

That said, you are expecting them to do math to compute that the deal equated to a $12 foot long.

I found the strip club by complete accident (thought it was a shoe store from the icon and wanted to get some new kicks) and have deduced that there are apparently only some strippers who will sleep with you.

For example, Cheetah would not sleep with Franklin or with Michael so far. Haven't gotten Toby so I don't know if he'd score with her.

I have a black fatty Xbox 360 Elite, with 120HDD, that is roughly 6+ yrs old.

The recommendations that I have read on the interwebs, indicate that I need to purchase a USB 2.0 , place "install" disk on USB, then install "play" disk onto the HDD.

Which brands, specs for a USB will I be looking for?
Are there any foolproof install theories?

I hit my first PS3 bug:

Question: Grand Theft Auto V freezes on a load screen when I try to replay a mission. Is this a known issue?

Answer: This issue can occur either during a mission replay of “The Jewel Store job prep” or when retrying the mission after failing when acquiring the pest control van. A possible workaround at this stage would be avoid failing the mission at this particular point or to attempt this mission during the day, as it is possible the issue is caused by a scenario scripted to happen at night time.

Eh, I don't know I'd say that. Aside from not letting people know that there could be issues with a download copy due to the game needing to read from 2 sources I don't know what they really could have done. They needed to get everything they could out of 7 year old systems to get the game to look like it does and it still has performance issues.

Not ever having any consoles, I am amazed in watching the YouTube LP at how much they were able to squeeze out of the dated graphics engine. Performance and details look great for such a large map.

When I got to the Trevor missions in the LP, I was blown away by the landscape - a jarring switch from LA. It is a landscape I'm familiar with from places in antelope valley and Mojave.

So far it's been just like watching a 8 hour movie.

Interestingly enough, this situation could have been a selling point for MS and their new console had they stuck with their original plan to have all games installed on hard drive. They could point to this situation (wrong or right) and say, "See, when you have a game that is optimized for disc yet allows the user to install to the HD, this is what happens. We wanted to do hard drive only to remove this issue, but people complained about it."

On the other side, some may say that the issues with performance on hard drive installs indicate that the decision by both companies to stay with disc-based games was a good one. Only time will tell.

Not sure on the blowup, but if you abandon it, it goes to the police impound lot and you have to pay to get it out. I did that with a sports car and had to pay $250 to get it out.

It took me just over an hour to fly that damn plane, make the drop in the water and then land on that tiny little airstrip. The good thing about sucking at this game is that I have weeks of gameplay ahead of me still because it takes me a while to get through each storyline mission. Plus I like to spend a lot of time just doing my own things (murder, mayhem, blowing wads of money at the strip joint, etc)

OK possible really stupid question here from an amateur console gamer. I must have logged like 100 hours with GTA4 and now am playing GTA5 which has much harder car handling than 4. In New York City I always just lost cops by hauling ass and getting out of their range and then dumping the car for another. Is there another/better way to lose the cops that I am unaware of since I never played 1-3? I crash or am rammed by them on pretty much any 3 star or higher chase.

Spoiler on how you make your money in this game. Read if you really want to know before you run in to it.

One of the characters gives you a series of missions to kill CEOs and company big wigs to influence the stock market. You make money by reading between the lines and investing wisely just prior to performing the job. You then sell your shares for MASSIVE profit following the jobs.

Loving it so far, I have brought myself to do a few missions, but mostly I just find myself getting fast cars and driving them as recklessly as possible until they blow up. That and taking photos of pretty scenery and police shootouts when i happen upon them. A few have been pretty grisly. Real good way to get free guns and police cars without any hassle from the cops.
