Fucking embarrassing attempt at tanking that doesn't even make any sense. Turn the fourth overall pick two years ago into a late round first. Complete joke of a franchise.

yeah, just makes no sense at all. Prior to the new CBA you could maybe make the argument to save money, but rookie contracts are cheap.
At least send him to the Raiders or some other non playoff team. Makes you wonder how much they really shopped him, I can't imagine the Giants wouldn't have given up more.

I think it's a good trade for both teams. The browns have a new GM that doesn't have attachment to Richardson and it's hard to argue that he's worth more than a pick in the 20s. On the other hand the colts need a running back and get one that is league average-ish.
This trade probably helps make the Browns better in the long run than if they just kept Richardson and the trade makes the Colts better right now and for the the next couple of years.
I really don't see how this is a bad trade.

Thomas is going to have value to them if they end up drafting their QB of the future next year. Who would give anything for Weeden? He's a soon to be 30 year old QB that plays like a 3rd stringer at best. The rest of their pieces that would have any value are all 25 and younger I believe. Richardson is a case where what they're getting is honestly more than what he's worth. Realistically, based on how he's played in the NFL, he's worth no more than a 3rd round pick. The only reason they're getting a 1st round pick is the colts are desperate for a running back and the name Trent Richardson still carries some value.

I want to know who called who. Did the colts call up and just say "hey, can we have Trent Richardson" as a joke and it worked out or did the Browns call them and say "hey, want our best young offensive player?" Im assuming Richardson asking to be a bigger part of the offense, which he should have been for cleveland, just really didn't go over well.

If the Browns are not going to contend this year, this might be a good deal. They improve the chances that they suck this year and it seems like it will be a pretty strong QB draft, and they get another first.
On top of that, when it comes down to basic running between the tackles, is McGahee that much worse than Richardson? Main issue, is he healthy? If he is, he can do the dirty work a la BGE or Benson in GB.
Where this hurts is throwing in the towel two games into the season and also the fact Richardson was a Top 5 pick that essentially has gone to waste (in another strong QB draft, that one, too).
I've never played organized football. How hard will it be for a running back to step in at this point, learn the playbook, blocking schemes, etc?

I never made it past high school football, and I played defense... But my understanding is blocking schemes are the toughest things for runningbacks to pickup in a new playbook. As long as the lineman block the way McGahee is used to (man to man or zone), he should be fine picking up the running play book. Not hard to find the 1 hole and run.

Neither have I, but as a lifelong fan, it has always been my understanding that it is one of the more simpler positions to grasp from the get-go, and especially if you're not really expected to be out there on passing downs.
This is supposedly why you see rookie RBs impact faster than rookies at the other skill positions.

Didn't see anything out of Richardson that would convince me that he was going to be great... But at the same time, I am not sure how much we have seen him healthy. I believe he was playing with broken rib(s) last year.
Too bad Mike Ditka is still not in the league. The Browns could have stolen an entire draft for Richardson.

this wasnt a dumb trade, drafting TR with the 3rd pick 2 years ago was the dumb move+1 And I like(d) Trent Richardson a lot. He's a hard runner between the tackles and is a much better pass catcher than anyone gives him credit for. If Indy can win 10+ games and make the playoffs (thus the pick falls around 20) I think they did fine. Not great because I think they have bigger holes, but I understand Irsay isn't the most patient owner - and that free agent RB pile is pretty bad right now.
Cleveland also did right by them. New GM was willing to admit that TR never should have been picked 3rd overall and got a 1st. If it ends up in the 10-15 range, they probably won the trade, if it's around 20 it's a push, but they're definitely a few players away from being a playoff team, although they do have a few nice young building blocks in Haden and Thomas.

They were going to tank with him. This just gives them a first rounder next year so they can start building something next year. Once the shock of it wears off, I'm sure this makes more logical sense, but it is still rather shocking that they pulled this off. Richardson might have looked average but factor in injuries and the support he had, and it really isn't a surprise in regards to how limited he was. If nothing else, he went from playing behind the worst starting QB from last year's draft to arguably the best.

I'm in this group. Richardson doesn't appear to be in the Petersen, once a decade stud RB mold.
If they end up with Bridgewater with their 1st pick, another strong piece with the Colts piece, and have their early 2nd round pick, they are probably ahead of where they are heading now looking at 2015, when they'd either be paying Richardson big $, or letting him walk, and looking to replace him.

Football Outsiders, through 2 games this season and all of last season, has the Cleveland adjusted line yards higher than the RB yards. Cleveland's running game was roughly the same in 2011 with an out of shape Peyton Hillis and Chris Ogbonnaya than it's been with Richardson. What Richardson does do well and is an underrated aspect of RB production is he catches the ball.
Right now he's a RB that's struggled to stay healthy in his 1+ years in the league and didn't break the top 35 running backs last season. Not exactly a guy I'm looking to build around.
He should do better with the colts, but I don't see him jumping into the upper echelon of RBs. He's a guy that became the 3rd overall pick running behind a line that made Mark Ingram a Heisman Trophy winner.

It's definitely not the position you should take if your team flatout lacks talent/sucks IMO. For every Peterson, that is able to get yards against defenses that don't respect his QB, there are a many more mere mortals who, despite their various skills, just aren't going to be able to do much when the QB and O-Line both suck.
Better to build your line and try steal a runner later in the draft IMO.

I'm quietly optimistic about this trade. I like Richardson, have since college. And I'm mostly sure his struggles are because of the lack of talent that has surrounded him at Cleveland. I think he has potential.
The big if, obviously, is health. If he can provide 1100 yards and 10 TDs, that takes pressure off Luck and it's a nice trade.
Sure, Cleveland is tanking….but I've always had a soft spot for the Browns, even been to a few games up there. Assuming this new front office can draft, the Browns have the potential to really come away with a stacked 2014 draft.
If Richardson stays healthy and the Browns don't whiff on the draft, it's a win-win. Luck-Richardson-Hilton-Fleener provide a nice offensive core for years to come.
It'll be a few years before we tell who comes out ahead on this.

I think that Richardson could become a star in Indy.
Think about this: Is Indy disappointed to lose the pick next year? No there will be a lot of enthusiasm surrounding this. For all the naysayers a year later, nobody was really questioning the pick when it was made, other than who he was picked behind.
Conversely, is Cleveland excited about that probable late first round pick? I bet Hoyer isn't excited to not be having to hand the ball to Richardson this week.

"". Trent Richardson was wasted on the browns, and there aren't many RB's around I would trade a 1st round pick for. The price they paid a year ago has ZERO relevancy to his value now - and only has 2.5 years left on the "cheap" contract.

Guy carries around the label of "injury-prone" yet he's a running back who fought through broken ribs all season and didn't take a seat until the last week of the season. I would love a player like that.
I've been a big fan of his talent since college and think he'll thrive in Indy once he gets up to speed. Drawing SF and SEA in the next three weeks could hurt his numbers though.

Does anyone know if there has been any proven, tangible evidence and punishment for NFL teams tanking a season? I would say that a punishment is fan apathy and lack of ticket sales, so they get pounded in the checkbook which is a good teacher of cause and effect. But has there been a situation that the league disallowed a trade (behind the scenes) or similar?

Don't think so. Very hard to prove. And for what it's worth, the guys who are left certainly will be playing their hardest...it's how you end up not being paralyzed.
As much as I like Richardson, this trade dropped them from maybe a 5 or 6 win team to probably a 3 or 4 win team (their defense is pretty solid, I think the #1 pick talk is a bit crazy).

The sad thing for Cleveland is even by tanking they will still not be worse than the Jaguars, so it really seems silly. I don't really see it as tanking though, they are losing a RB that has been maybe marginally better than an average street FA so far. The more I think about it, the more it feels like a great deal for the Browns though, getting a decent 1st round pick for a back that isn't worth a 3rd.

Unless the RB is transcendent I feel like a 1st is more valuable.
Top 10 rushers last year, and where they were drafted:
1 Adrian Peterson 1.7
2 Alfred Morris 6.3
3 Marshawn Lynch 1.12
4 Jamaal Charles 3.10
5 Doug Martin 1.31
6 Arian Foster UDFA
7 Stevan Ridley 3.9
8 C.J. Spiller 1.9
9 Chris Johnson 1.24
10 Frank Gore 3.1
So 3 of the top 10 were drafted with a higher pick that Cleveland is likely to receive.

Everyone seems to assume tanking has to mean a top 2 pick and one of Clowney/Bridgewater. I like both players, but I don't think they're transcendent talents like a Luck or Manning where there's some obvious NBA-like dropoff after pick #2. It should be a pretty deep draft at QB too - Hundley, Manziel, Mccarron, Murray, Boyd, Braxton Miller, Devin Gardner, Mariotta, Derek Carr are all names I've seen thrown around as potential 1st round picks (disagree on Miller, Gardner, maybe Mccarron). Not all of those will pan out (or even come out this year), but this could be a draft where a couple very good QB's go in the mid-late 1st, or even 2nd/3rd rounds. Cleveland also now has 2 picks in Rounds 1, 3 and 4 if they do want to trade up.

So Cleveland announces their 3rd string QB will start and then trades their starting RB before signing a replacement that teams didn't even bring in to training camp because of injury concerns. And now they'll be playing on the road against the Vikings.
If I've learned anything from following the Vikings it's that Minnesota has almost no chance of winning this week. The game looks like it should be an easy win so they'll find some spectacular way to lose it.

Not all the underclassmen will declare, but you'd have to bet at least 2 will shoot up draft boards and choose to go for it (and then at least 1 will be rumored as a potential #1 overall pick and fall to the bottom of the 1st round).
As long as a team is willing to go with and can utilize a mobile quarterback, these next couple drafts are going to be real deep. Use your own top 5 pick on a lineman or WR (if you think a Mike Evans is the next AJ Green) and then use the lower 1st or a 2nd on a QB and try to find the next Wilson/Kaepernick.

Plus you know, they don't have to play Richardson every down. They'll play him in a limited number of formations and play calls where he understands his responsibilities.

I think we may be overlooking something in this Richardson trade. Cleveland hasn't had a credible passing attack in the last decade. Teams routinely send 8 and 9 into the box to stuff the run. Richardson has been running every game against a stacked defense.
Next week with Indianapolis, teams CANNOT stack the box against him, if they do its suicide.
Indy just bought their offense the freedom to attack in any dimension they wish to from here on out.
I think we may look back on this as the beginning of something seriously longterm in this league.
I could be wrong, but when I think about how teams ignore the run entirely against the colts now and how they no longer can do that, Luck suddenly scares the living shit out of my defensive coordinator persona.

It's not hard to replace 3.5 yds/carry. Colts are very likely to lose 9-10 games with their schedule. I think it's the best value they could have gotten for a running back who's really not produced in the NFL and was traded on potential.

If I've learned anything from following the Vikings it's that Minnesota has almost no chance of winning this week. The game looks like it should be an easy win so they'll find some spectacular way to lose it.
Yep, never had a chance.

I'm not calling for him to be fired, but I think this is the start of his swan song and likely to be a long year. At his age I don't think he wants to be part of a rebuilding
That guy has more lives than a cat though. It seems that we have been in a position where we think that every couple years and then he wins another Super Bowl.... (I hate that man)

People will look at Richardson's YPC and think he hasn't made an impact, but I think he's done well. Tough yards between the tackles the Colts never get. Why he didn't get the ball on that 3rd and 1 is beyond me. Richardson has also picked up some key pass blocks.
Good game so far.

Yep, never had a chance.
Well, they have one if they had a decent QB who doesn't sail the ball out of bounds on a key third down that would have put the game away, but as they're the Vikings there was no way they were gong to win this game.
Or throws the ball 8 yards into the middle of the field with a lone timeout and 15 seconds left.

Frank Gore should have more than 8 rushes with the current quality of 49er receivers

Yeah, that was pretty bad but I don't think they were gonna get a TD there anyway. But whenever the Vikings offense fails to put a game away like not getting the first down there or selling for a FG against Chicago last week it's a safe bet they'll manage to lose.

Packers, Atlanta, and SF 1-2.
And to follow that up, if Chicago wins, all three win be in a division where there is a 3-0 team. Getting to the playoffs might be an issue let alone winning the division.

Don't think this was mentioned here yet but apparently Von Miller and the guy from the urine testing company conspiring to substitute another urine sample for him:

Aldon Smith has cleared out his locker and has taken an indefinite absence from the team-apparently voluntarily-not a suspension from the team or league. Questions as to why he was even playing at all of course.

Really haven't seen a physical Colts team since Harbaugh was our QB. Impressive win on both sides of the ball. Thought Richardson was good in his debut and his arrival obviously fired up Bradshaw. 2-1 going to Jax feels good. Need to be 3-1 with a brutal 3 game stretch after that (@ SD, Sea, Den)

Niners clearly have issues on offense at the moment, but it's hard to think that Aldon's issues this week were not a distraction.

So, Bills, Jets, Bucs….whose on the Pats schedule next week? Florida A&M? :D
Seriously, they are going to hit some rough patches in their next few games. Hey, the AFC East is still the best division in football at 9-3! ;) (6-0 outside the division!) For all the hand-wringing about the Pats underwhelming offense, it's kind of obscuring that the D is back to being a borderline top 10 unit that will give up more yards than it should but is elite at capitalizing on all the other team's mistakes and creating turnovers. We'll see just how they do against some better offenses and QB's in the upcoming weeks, and having a healthy Gronk/Amendola by the time the tough games and playoffs roll around is still imperative, but the baptism by fire Dobson/Thompkins/Edelman are going through will only pay dividends down the line. For now, 3-0 in the NFL is 3-0, and its our first time doing that since the 2007 season.

Definitely. Not the Pats fault they got the start the season against the best of the Sun Belt. :) The D is playing great, though I want to see how they do next week against an angry Falcon team. And the 3-0 will only help once seeding comes in. The Bronco-Pat tilt probably decides the #1 seed tie breaker. No one in the North will keep up and Houston is suspect.

Well, I think the first one of those woulda been overturned on review, but the fact the Bears had already burned 2 timeouts...I understand Trestman not challenging it.
Though I think the 2nd one broke the plane, too.
And burning all 3 timeouts in the 1st quarter is impressive, even by Bears standards.

Super excited about the Dolphins this season. I really like their character. It was looking ugly at the beginning, but they hung in and made big plays. Tannehill is looking like a very solid investment now. Very smart to let him start all last season and get accustomed to the NFL.
