Wow. Looking around the default rosters, the Raiders are a pretty clear choice for "biggest challenge."

I start out and...

Roster = #32
Stadium = #29
Fan Support = #28
Franchise Value = #32

I'm going to move relatively quickly, at least early on.

Injuries at 150. Combine Accuracy at 50. Cap Increase Range default. Chemistry off.

I'm going to let the coaches handle all depth charts.

EDIT: Here are a couple of house rules that I've been using pretty much all the way through that I'm now adding as "official" ones, given how I'm actually playing:
All contracts offered--both to free agents and for contract renegotiations--must be for at least the requested number of years. (No reducing the number of years, in other words.) One exception: for renegs, cap-outs (full or partial) are allowed.
During the offseason, offers to free agents may only be made during the following stages: FA1:2, FA2:1, and the pre-TC stage. (This will cause me to have to offer a little more to guys who are unwanted, but it allows the pre-TC stage for clean-up offers to fill out the roster.)

Stadium Stage: Just tried to renovate turf to improve it from "Fair."
Staff Draft: I end up with an entirely new staff, focused heavily on scouting, young talent, and player development.
Ticket Prices: Loving the new Rex button there.

No one is franchised.

We have the 1(1). Heading to bed now. Couple of stud WRs available and a "maybe" at QB.

FA1:1--The Great Purge. In short, if you suck and are making $1M or more, you're gone. It's not quite Empty Cupboard, but we're down to just 9 guys rated 50 or more future:

RB DMC
FB Reece
C Wisniewski
LT Willie Smith
RT Menelik Watson
K Janikowski
LDE Houston
SILB Burris
LCB Hayden

The good news is that I have a ton of cap room.

2014 Free Agency

I decide to SPEND

Jay Cutler and Luke McCown are the top QBs available, and there are a couple of intriguing QBs in the draft class. I think I'm going to play it safe at 1.1 and go with one of the can't miss WRs and try to sign McCown, who wants far less than Cutler. Given that I have DMC and 3/5 of a strong o-line, I decide to fill it out by signing two guards also.

I posted this in the main thread: I got creamed early on. Both of my guard targets and my top TE target went to AI teams. Nice!

No big bumps or drops in TC, but after Preseason Week 2, I notice some significant changes. Most notably FA QB signee McCown drops from 50ish to 39/39 and rookie James jumps from 50ish future to 62 future. The AI is handling depth charts, and bumps him up to #1, at least for the preseason. 1.1 pick Garret jumps to 51/71, which isn't a big surprise. His combines were off the charts.

I'm ok with the AI starting McCown at QB for now. I guess if things get really bad and I want James to start, I can just cut McCown. :D

As far as our outlook, I have no idea. We're tied for #12 in roster strength, but only at 44, but our cohesion has to stink. 6 starters on each side of the ball are new to the team this season.

2014 Weeks 1-4

We start out 3-1, our lone loss being to NE on the road, but that loss may have been crippling. High-dollar FA signee and #1 WR DeSean Jackson goes down with a Compound Leg Fracture in Week 4. Could be a career-ender.

McCown has an 81.4 passer rating after 4 games. DMC has rushed for 404 yards and also has 125 receiving yards. Rookie WR Garrett has 232 yards, but is going to be asked to step up significantly with Jackson gone.

Noticed a VERY nice feature for SP just now: the AI will make Out-injured guys inactive for you without signing anyone new. In other words, it is shuffling the Active/Inactive stuff for me. Very nice time-saver. It'll allow me to play at a higher injury setting without the annoyance of doing that crap manually.

2014 Games 5-8

Another 3-1 to run the record to 6-2, but I'm not really sure how. Stats suggest either good dice rolls or the turnover ratio. We're #15 in offense, #12 in ppg, #17 in defense, #4 in defense ppg. The only numbers that stand out are that we only have 8 turnovers (tied for 4th best) and the margin is +6 (tied for 5th best). DM hasn't fumbled a single time and has 751 rushing yards. McCown is doing the "game manager" thing well enough for me: 82.7 rating, 1760 yards passing, only 6 picks to date.

2014 Games 9-12

We go 1-3 over this stretch to fall to 7-5 and in a very tight AFC West. SD is 7-5, we are 7-5, and Den/KC are both 6-6. McCown stunk it up over this stretch. His best passer rating in four starts was 69.1. He's down to 72.4 for the year but seems like our best option for making the playoffs...

2014 Games 13-16
DMC puts the team on his back and leads us to a division title at 11-5. We go 4-0 over this stretch as McFadden goes for 167, 130, 137, and 109 yards. Lowest ypc in any game in the last quarter of the season is 5.19.

2014 Playoffs...

That was short-lived. Peyton and the Broncos come to town and put us in our place in the WC Round, 34-10. It was 31-0 at halftime.

Ben E Lou
12-13-2013, 11:33 PM
I'm not sure what to make of these numbers. They don't look like the results of a legit playoff team. The defense seemed to do a good job in keeping people from scoring, but I'm not really sure why. McFadden was clearly the team MVP on offense:

No retirements. Jackson gets the "Watch Closely (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?p=2882539#post2882539)" label. With all those bonuses handed out for FA signings, we lost ~$60M, one of only 5 teams to lose money, and were #32 in finances. Hello, bottom of staff draft.

I think since all of our guys had multiple years left on their deals, none of them got poached. By the time our pick came around, our guys were far and away the best options left at their respective staff positions.

Ben E Lou

Not many money-saving renegs available to me in FA1:1. We could cap some guys out, but I'm wary of doing that en masse with the high-salary contracts. Right now, it looks like CB is the only strong position of need...depending on what happens with Jackson at WR, of course. And given that Jackson is our highest-salaried player, I definitely don't want to cap him out while I'm running the risk of him dying. Looking over the WRs and CBs available in FA, there's not really anyone that I'm gaga about anyway, so no cap outs. I'll pursue CB Brandon Flowers, who has a relatively modest salary request. If he doesn't sign, it looks like I'll have to stand pat with 29/29 Taiwan Jones as our 2nd CB. Definitely a position to look at for our 1(24) pick. Seems relatively certain that I'll grab a CB or WR there.

Flowers (46/46) signed at CB. Headed to the draft.

2015 Draft

When the 1(24) is up, my CB option makes me feel more confident than my top WR options, so he's the pick. Here's the draft in its entirety:

From: Front Office Football

Amateur Draft Report:

Rnd 1 - Harry Snyder, CB, Virginia--34/66
Rnd 2 - Grayson Amey, WR, Vanderbilt--19/22--4 blue combines. I hope guys like this can grow significantly in FOF7.
Rnd 3 - Zion Matthews, OLB, Vanderbilt--10/25--Drafted as ILB, moved to WLB. Has 3-4 WLB skillz, it appears.
Rnd 4 - Nicolas Woolley, DE, Miami, Ohio--15/29
Rnd 5 - Scott Bookas, S, Colorado State--13/27
Rnd 6 - Ralph Gallo, C, Northwestern St., La.--13/37
Rnd 7 - Fred Fries, RB, Alabama St.--14/23

2 holdouts.

SS Chris Clemons, a free agent signed last year and set to make a $1.5M salary and cost $1.9M in cap room, is asking for a four-year deal that is a little more than twice that amount on a per-year basis.

SILB Miles Burris, on the last season of a cheap 4-year rookie contract, wants huge starter money.

By capping out DMC, I have *just* enough cap room to give these guys what they want and do the one contract extension for next year that needs to happen. However, I'll start next offseason at or over the cap.

With those moves I can afford nothing in FA2 besides rookie minsal guys. I offer a few guys with PR/KR skills and a couple more semi-interesting guys.

No big rookie movement in either direction in TC. (They do change a little there. It looks like after Pre2 is the "big stage" now, though.)

Heh. KC offers me the 1st round pick belonging to STL next year and a young mediocre DE for QB Erick James. The Rams went 4-12 last year and are starting a rookie QB (albeit a very promising one drafted a 1.3) this year. Interesting to see, but James is 18/49-->36/62 so far. A bird in the hand and all that. No deal.

1-3 Record. James looked
solid (89.0 rating) in two starts, but got a concussion in game 2. The defense has bad overall numbers, but much of that game in a 51-45 shootout loss to Detroit where they gave up over 600 yards of offense.

QB Erick James returned in Week 7. We are 2-2 in this stretch, 3-5 for the season. The defense is still #32 in yardage allowed and scoring. That Detroit game isn't looking like as much of an aberration now. Opponents have completed 68.3% of their passes against us so far...

2015 Games 9-12

Another 2-2 stretch, 5-7 for the season. Not much of interest to report. The offense is playing pretty well, not great. The defense is still playing badly, though they are up to #31 in yards allowed (still #32 in ppg).

McFadden had a big ratings drop and corresponding stats drop. He is probably done as a Raider. I can't imagine that I'll be able to justify his 6M salary next year. James is up to 41/61 at the end of the season.

On defense, clearly we need some help.

No awards for us.

K Janikowski retires, and I let TE Kellen Davis head into free agency. He wanted too much to extend his deal.

Heading out for a run. 2016 season (and probably a few more) later today.

Up to #27 in finances. We maintain our staff once again.

VERY lucky break: lots of teams in the middle of the pack. 10 went 7-9 last year, and we were #2 in tiebreakers among them, so we wind up with the #8 overall pick.

I expect better things from your franchise now that you have removed the taint that is Kellen Davis.

Looks like #1/#2 picks from your first draft are already big contributors. Obviously bodes well to hit on those picks.

Hey Ben,

Thanks for doing this...

Are you doing gameplanning at all (sorry if I missed it) -- or is everything rex'd?

Ben E Lou
12-14-2013, 04:43 PM
I'm doing the game planning myself. I really enjoy that aspect of FOF.

After renegs and extensions in the 2016 offseason, I have roughly $11.5M to spend in free agency. Needs appear to be:

RB--With a good OL, I want to try going with a back good at HR and not much else. Jalen Parmele is a FA and is 81 HR, 75 End, and has a pretty cheap asking price. Seems like he could be a fit.
K--no FAs look terribly interesting. I may end up with a 45/45 cheap type.
WLB--FA Connor Barwin (62 PRT, 65 PRS), I got my eye on you!!!
S--Earl Thomas looks like a solid option here. After him, FA looks pretty barren.

I signed all four guys above. Overall ratings are...

RB Parmele: 45/45
K Hopkins: 47/47
WLB Barwin: 57/57
FS Thomas: 48/48

I'm hoping adding a legit pass-rusher and a safety with strong zone skills will beef up the defense. And I'm very curious about Parmele as a RB. It seems so far that the o-line is more important to the running game in this version. If that's actually true, I'd think it would logically follow that a good o-line would go well with a hole recognition back.

On to the draft...

Ben E Lou
12-14-2013, 04:50 PM
2016 Amateur Draft

So I signed a RB fairly cheaply in FA, but there's a monster-stud rookie RB. If he falls past #3 or so, I might try to trade up. There's also a guy who looks like he could be a monster at SLB or SILB. It may be that when one of those guys goes, I trade up to get the other...

Ben E Lou
12-14-2013, 04:50 PM
First five picks are OT, QB, QB, WR, CB. Woot!

Bill Callahan! Ha!

Ben E Lou
12-14-2013, 04:51 PM
Heh. And 6-7 are ILB (not the OLB I like), DE. Both of my top targets are there.

Ben E Lou
12-14-2013, 05:26 PM
Tough call. The RB looks like an uber-stud who could last a long time for a RB, but defense seems to be our greater need. Our DC sucks at interviewing, so I don't worry about the VO for the guy I get. Here's the whole draft:

Rnd 1 - Peyton Farrell, OLB, Colorado--41/65
Rnd 2 - Tanner Munn, G, Louisville--32/88--combine-skipper. Couldn't resist those BARZ!!!1
Rnd 3 - Roman Dillon, FB, Pittsburgh--23/60--My FB is getting old, and this guy had pretty strong combine scores.
Rnd 4 - Kirk Douthett, CB, Pittsburgh--13/33
Rnd 5 - Gael Sherman, TE, North Carolina State--16/38
Rnd 6 - Kennedy Rosenkrantz, WR, Hawaii--12/26
Rnd 7 - Nicky Hitchcock, S, Kentucky--14/37

(FWIW, the RB I liked, Ricky Forney, went #9, right after my pick.)

Ben E Lou
12-14-2013, 06:16 PM
(Oh, DEN gets the RB. He is 56/77 and only 36% developed. MONSTER! Hope I don't regret picking Farrell.)

I'm wondering if my defensive game plan from FOF2K7 simply doesn't work now. I'm going to try Rexing defense next year and see if that improves things some.

On the offensive side of the ball, if D. Jackson has another solid year or two in him, I think we could make some noise in the next season or two.

FA signee Connor Barwin brings in 2nd Team All Pro honors.

I end the season and backup QB McCown retires. No other retirements. CB Hayden has 16 weeks left on his injury and therefore will not get the franchise tag that I'd intended for him.
Stadium renovation is complete and Turf improves from "Fair" to "Excellent." That oughta help with injuries.

2017 Offseason Begin

Changed strength training coach, no others.

No Franchise Tag.

After some renegs and cuts, I perceive the following as needs:

Backup QB
RB
P
NT
WILB
RCB
SS

We have roughly $22M in cap space to spend on free agents, but WR Caleb Garrett is in the final year of his deal and I'm concerned about a holdout. He wants a contract that would increase his cap cost by $8.5M. That said, he's 66 Loyalty and had a fairly pedestrian season last year: 80-1057-6-7.39ypt. Maybe he'll play it out. In any case, I think the wise move is to try to go with inexpensive options and keep it to ~$15M. If Garrett holds out, I can cap out a guy or two to afford him.

Here are my signees:

Backup QB--John Skelton (32/34) will fill this role.
RB--Lamar Miller (45/45)--More my style of back with high breakaway, decent HR, low elusiveness.
P--No one worth grabbing. I end up re-signing Donnie Jones for minsal. I may draft one.
NT--Two-headed monster here with Steve Farr as the run stopper and Frank Kearse as the pass rusher.
WILB--Orie Lemon (39/39) is 67 in run defense and 44 in zone.
RCB--Max Brady (45/45) has good coverage skill, terrible run defense.
SS--Matt Elam (52/52) is the only high-dollar signee of the group this year (4 yrs/$24.5M). He's strong at run defense, zone, and interceptions.

No real headline-grabbers here, but perhaps it's an upgrade. We head to the draft with no "need a first-rounder to step in and start" situations.

2017 AMATEUR DRAFT

We have the #16 pick. Though I have a starter in place everywhere, there are more than a few positions that could stand an upgrade, and we're getting old at WR, G, FB, and OLB.

For my first round pick, there will solid-looking options available at WR, NT, S, and RB. Looking at the FA pools, I decided to go with RB, as it seems to be the hardest of those positions to sign. Here's the draft in its entirety:

1(16): RB Leroy Stugg (48/70)--Two reds (dash/bench), and four blues. Looks like a big upgrade.
2(15): FL Butch Barrett (26/48)--blues in dash/agi/broad/pos drill. Doesn't look like a star, but a nice PR/KR/WR3 type.
3(14): SS Fernando Clark (30/50)--4 blues
4(13): P B.J. Hoag (49/61)--No idea when the "right" time to pull the trigger on the punter in the draft would be, but at the minsal + $480K bonus for four years cost and it being a need, it certainly doesn't seem like a waste to get him here.
5(19): LCB John Hughes (14/39)--Pretty decent combines across the board for a guy at this point.
6(18): SE Mason MacWhirter (18/32)--Looks like a really nice ST/PR/KR combo guy.
7(18): TE Gavin Begley (18/23)--Red agility plus blue strength and position drill. Very weird bars. Maybe nothing, but worth a 7th to see.

FOF says we have the #2 roster in the league. I'm going to start the season using my standard defensive game plan, but if the defense stinks early, I'll move to Rex. Offensively, I think we can throw it down the field a bit more now that QB James is starting to come into his own.

2017 GAMES 1-4
We open the season 3-1, though it might be the least impressive 3-1 I've ever seen. ;) James has a 64.9 passer rating, Stugg is averaging 2.91ypc, and the defense is #27 in yardage allowed and #26 in scoring allowed. And we're -4 in turnovers.

2017 GAMES 5-8
2-2 in this strech. The offense picks it up. The Rexed defense is doing a little worse than my custom one and gets abandoned after four games. Maybe it's the horrid defensive cohesion that I have. Maybe I need to be more patient or invest in a real star or two.

2017 GAMES 9-12
1-3, 6-6 on the season, tied with SD and DEN for the AFC West lead. KC is at 5-7. Anyone's division. We seem to be decidedly mediocre once again.

Oops. I overlooked that D. Jackson tore his ACL in Week 3. That would be why the offense has been so mediocre, I assume. :(

...and we finish 1-3 to go 7-9 again. So for the four seasons that this has been "my" team, we are...

11-5
7-9
8-8
7-9

Good sign for SP difficulty, I suppose.

I decided to just go with two big-ticket signings after a bunch of cap outs rather than grabbing a bunch of mediocre starters. LCB D.J. Hayden (78/78) is fully healed and back with us, and 5th-year SLB Nate Hudson (76/76) joins the club also. If these moves don't upgrade our defense, then I'm at a total loss. ;)

2018 GAMES 1-4
We jump out to a 4-0 start and the defense gives up only 11.0 ppg in this stretch. James doesn't throw a ton (104 passes,) but puts up a 116.6 rating with only 1 pick. CB Harry Snyder breaks his foot and is going to miss a little more than half the season.

2-2, but both losses were close. At midseason we're 6-2 and QB James is looking like an MVP candidate.

3-1 with a 1-pount loss. James still has a QB rating over 100. We're tied for first in the West with Denver and close the season there.

BEGIN 2019 OFFSEASON
Minor staff change (strength coordinator)
No retirements
No franchise tag

I have just enough to reneg/extend the guys I want, and I'm fairly set at all starting positions. 'm pretty much standing pat this offseason, it appears. Maybe I'll try to sign a backup QB/mentor.

Ben E Lou

There are two top-tier WRs in this draft class and then two more who'd do. With D. Jackson getting really old and last year's pick Wyatt Hartman looking like a major bust, that seems like the primary focus for this draft. If the first one drops far enough, I may try to trade up for the second.

The first one goes at 1(8). That's far enough. I offer my 1st, 2nd, and my 2nd next year to move to 1(9). My draftees...

1(9): FL Donny Finley (50/80)--Looks realer than Real Deal Holyfield.
3(23): RDT-->NT Leroy Sheldon (20/32)--Strong overall combines. Especially looks like he can rush the passer.
4(23): LDE Ike Cassidy (21/35)--Pass-rushing DE.
5(23): LT Tyrell Sevcik (21/48)--We could use depth here. Only two guys under contract heading into draft.
6(23): C-->RG Axel Dotson (6/44)--OL also could stand some depth.
7(23): RB Lionel Komljenovich (25/40)--No-combine guy with some ST skills.

So the AI still isn't valuing WR's appropriately?Perhaps 1.8 and 1.9 is exactly where a WR of that talent should go in the new engine. I think mouth-breathers are going to pick WRs too early for a while in MP.

Yes, this ties directly into a question I have that I'm sure was answered elsewhere, but in a BenELou dynasty we may see tangible evidence. Am I correct that in the new version Jim sought to address the over-impact of elite WRs and BPR specifically? Where that's no longer the automatic success strategy (in theory)?

Ben E Lou
12-16-2013, 10:08 AM
In 2016, the WRs were rated 70 and 63 and both had BPR over 70. Both played the entire season. That would have been good for at least a 105 QB rating and 8.5 ypa in the old game for me in SP with the slightly-above-average QBs I had that year. I put up 7.4ypa and an 87.3 rating. Judge for yourself.

2019 FA2 is uneventful. With very little cap room, I just re-sign John Skelton as our backup QB, and a handful of undrafted rookies.

TC/PRE CHANGES OF NOTE

First round pick Finley is 50/80-->53/73
5th round LT Tyrell Sevcik: 21/48-->25/51
Undrafted SLB Jesse Springer: 28/34-->33/41
3rd-year man and former 5th round pick LCB John Hughes is 31/41-->42/47 in this camp. He started at 14/39.

2019 GAMES 13-16
We close out the season 3-1 to finish 12-4, our best record in the seven years I've run the team. However, the Jets have the tiebreaker for the #2 seed and we have to play in the WC Round.

Around the league, RB Ricky Forney (remember him?) led the league with 1695 yards rushing and had 5.45ypc. (Side note: I have no idea what's up wtih these guys reporting multiple 2000-yard seasons. Sample size? Alternate player file? The record in my league so far is 1,755.) Oh yeah, and he caught 71 passes for 563 yards. Two AI tight ends had 1000 yards receiving or more, and Cam Newton was the top rushing QB with 814 yards and 5 TDs.

2019 POSTSEASON
We open with the Patriots at home in the WC Round. No contest. We led 30-0 midway through the 2nd quarter, and cruised to a 39-3 victory. James threw for 371 yards with no picks.

In the divisional round, we head on the road to play the Jets. They knock James out of the game early in the second quarter, and we succumb quietly, 30-13.

Donny Finley brings home OROY honors. G Tanner Munn, T Willie Smith, and OLB Nate Hudson are all 2nd Team All Pros.

Two starters retire in the offseason: G Robert Turner and DE Corey Wootton.

Assistant Coach Erick Stoyanovich is hired away by Tennessee to be their Offensive Coordinator. We sign Jo-Lonn Dunbar, now age 35 and in the coach pool for the first time, to replace him.

Ben E Lou
12-17-2013, 07:05 AM
We begin the 2020 offseason $28.4M over the cap. First, the cuts of note:

FL DeSean Jackson is down to 42/42 and was only in on 16 pass plays last year. He is now at best our #4 WR and I can't justify his salary of nearly $4M.

TE Jamie Mathis is a bit of a tougher call, but he has to go as well. His career 5.74ypt, including only 4.49 last year, makes him a liability. His $7M salary this year and $8.2M salary next year send him out the door.

After renegotiations and a couple more minor cuts, I have no money to spend and two holes in the starting lineup: I'm going to have to go with rookies, non-promising-looking young former draftees, or minsal veterans at TE, DE, NT, and one OG slot. I'm also going to let starting LT Willie Smith and P B.J. Hoag become FAs after this season because I don't want to pay what it would take to extend them. And RB Leroy Stugg may hold out. He's in the last year of his deal, and there's no way I can extend him. The plan is to franchise him next year.

Ben --

Most important question -- with your acumen with the prior version -- I'm assuming single player wasn't "fun" before; Is it now with this one?

Ben E Lou

Infinitely more fun because it is far more challenging. No comparison. I played FOF2K7 SP with all kinds of house rules and could still build a dominant team in just 2-3 seasons usually. I'm playing all-out and have 3 playoff appearances in 6 seasons and only one postseason victory--in the WC Round.

I'll jump on that bandwagon as well, I never had to bother looking into the future before much and worry about the cap and filling needs. Definitely something you need to do in SP with this version.

2020 AMATEUR DRAFT

With four slots open for a rookie to step in and start, it seems to make sense to go with "best player available" at any of those positions. At 1(27), it looks like an offensive guard is the way to go. Here's my entire draft:

1(27): LG Frankie Hudson (18/74)--Raw, but great combines and potential.
3(27): TE Otis Coltharp (16/38)--3-blue guy with solid-looking run blocking potential.
4(27): RDE Jared Irwin (14/18)--Yeah, bad bars, but I like his pass-rushing possibilities.
5(27): RDT-->NT Antonio Lane (21/46)--Combine skipper with decent bars.
6(27): FL Brian Kirk (15/33)--We only had 3 WRs under contract heading into the draft. Kirk was a 3-blue guy with decent bars.
7(27): SE Maurice Sowers (13/28)--I looked at Sowers and his 6.93 agility drill in the 6th round and he was still there in the 7th. I like having at least 5 WRs anyway, so there's room on the roster.

2020 FA2--Most important news is that RB Suggs didn't hold out. Due to cap constraints, all signees were undrafted rookies.

2020 TC/Preseason

Starting center Steven Wisniewski breaks his foot in preseason and will miss the first quarter-ish of the regular season.
7th round draft pick WR Maurice Sowers outshines the other youngsters with a 13/28-->18/35 showing and thus earns the WR4 job.
6th-year CB Harry Snyder drops to 51/51, and I can't help but wonder if that's more of a "scout correction" than an actual change. He has never performed like the 60-65 guy his ratings indicated he might be.
And the worst of it, in the final preseason game, QB Erick James suffers a Compound Leg Fracture and will miss the season. Santiago Vanderley, a former 5th round pick who is 15/25-->25/32 over the course of his short career, will lead the team.

2020 WEEKS 1-4
We start out 2-2, and VanderLey is the big surprise: 89 for 134, 8 TDs, 2 INTs, 106.8 QB Rating, 8.57 ypa. Our running game is terrible early on, with just 3.08ypc. We suffered another huge injury blow in Week 1: D.J. Hayden had to have ACL Surgery.

2020 WEEKS 5-8
1-3. VanderLey cools off a bit, but it still looking very solid overall (97.5 rtg, 8.24ypa). The running game picks it up, but the pass defense has gone to hell in a handbasket with our best defender out.

2020 WEEKS 9-12
The schedule was kind to us during this phase: we played three teams with losing records; we won three games to even things up at 6-6. And the great news is that the entire division is down this year, so 6-6 gives us a 1-game lead heading into the final fourth of the season. VanderLey is still doing ok, though he has cooled off considerably. It's look like he'll set a team record or two for passing, though.

2020 WEEKS 13-16
We didn't exactly light it up, but going 2-1 at the beginning of this stretch clinched the division, so I was able to deactivate some key starters for Week 17, an ugly loss. We finish 8-8, but that's good enough for a division title in the league's worst division.

2021 OFFSEASON BEGIN
Bill Callahan gets the axe as Head Coach in favor of....a former Raider! Tony Pashos served as the Assistant Coach for Chicago from 2016-2020 and now appears ready to take on his first Head Coaching gig.

Two cap casualties in FA1:1--C Stefen Wisniewski (49/49, yr 11) and K Dustin Hopkins are released.

QB James has the "Watch Closely" tag on him. He is in the final year of his contract. I can really use some cap space. My choices are:

A: Extend his contract with a high-bonus, low-first-year offer, saving me over $6M this year--enough to perhaps fill a hole or two in FA. The risk here is that if he can't perform like his old self, we'll take a huge cap hit.
B: Trade him and go with Santiago VanderLey, who may be "good enough." The main issue I have with that move is that VanderLey is also in the final year of his deal, and because he started last season, he wants a fairlybig contract. Extending VanderLey and trading James would give a net cap savings of around $8.5M this year and a bit less than that in future seasons.
C: There are four veteran QBs in free agency rated in the 41-48 range, all wanting modest money (around $3M this year). I could cut bait on both expensive QB options and go "game manager" all the way.In the end, I decide that I don't like the idea of having to pay VanderLey that much when last season could have been just good dice rolls. I decide against Option C because I don't think I have enough defensive talent to make a "game manager" work, and it doesn't appear that there will be enough in FA to build it quickly. So with some trepidation, I extend Erick James's contract at the beginning of FA1 so I can pursue some guys.

2021 FREE AGENCY/DRAFT

My positions of need for starters are C, DE (could really use two), and TE. I also need a punter and a kicker. Assessing each...

CENTER
27/27 Skip Ferguson is my only player under contract. The options in free agency are a bit limited as well. There are several guys in the upper 40s/lower 50s, but they would cost around 2/3 of the ~$8M I have to spend in FA. I decide to pursue a mediocre 44/44 guy here for a cheap deal.

DEFENSIVE END
I'm noticing what may be some increased effectiveness of "power rush" guys with high PRS. They don't get a lot of sacks, but they seem to get more hurries. There's an inexpensive guy who is 46/46 overall with 55 run defense and 64 PRS available. He is one target. For the other end, I pursue a more "traditional" PRT option.

TIGHT END
There is a monster-stud looking TE in the draft class. We wants him. I'll have to trade up to get him, so I extend my cheap RFA 40/40 TE (Wyatt May) just in case.

A couple of cheap decent-looking options are available in FA for P and K, so they get offers as well. Here are the signees:

RDE Winston Krenzel (44/44, yr 5)--52 Run Defense and 62 Pass Rush Strength.
P Tim Masthay (55/55, yr 12)--Pretty decent all around, and only $1.4M.
C Heath Gilmore (43/43, yr 5)--Another cheap signing ($1.2M), but looks like a decent upgrade.
LDE Corey Howe (40/40, yr 8)--He was my fifth round pick in 2014. Never started as a Raider, but bounced around the league and earned a couple of starting jobs. He had 7.5 sacks and 14 hurries for TBY last year. most expensive signee of the group at $2.7M this year.
K John Potter (54/54, yr 9)--A solid all around kicker who came to us for $1.4M.

This group isn't anything to write home about, but all appear to be decent upgrades from what I had. If I can trade up for that TE, I think this offseason can be deemed a successful one.

2021 AMATEUR DRAFT

Looking at the Amateur Draft History screen, the earliest a TE has gone so far is #14. This guy looks worthy of going higher than that, so I target #10 for a trade up. (I have the #21 pick.)

Grrrrr....and The Niners take him at #8. Here's who I missed:
http://www.fof-ihof.com/upload/Ben%20E%20Lou/randle.png

When 1(21) rolls around, there's not much at my positions of need. However, there is a good-looking fullback. With it appearing that BPR isn't so crucial, I decide to draft him and convert to TE. Here's the whole draft:

1(21): FB-->TE Micah Shaw (26/62-->24/57)--Very curious to see how this turns out.
2(21): RB Elijah Daniels (27/37)--I never would have drafted a backup RB in the 2nd round in FOF7, but it sure seems that you need actual talent here now, especially when your RB1 is only a 260ish carry guy. Daniels ran a 4.44 (red) and also has 3 blues. Seems like a steal this late.
3(21): C Brantley Stevenson (21/39)--Two reds and a blue. Could be a decent pickup here.
4(21): SILB Myles Cook (13/44)--4 blues, 1 green. Starting SILB is in year 10.
5(21): RDE Dana Giles (10/18)--Some semi-promising combines. Dismal bars.
6(21): LG Curtis Allen (21/33)--Mammoth dude with a big bench press.
7(21): SS/PR Harold Swift (10/19)--Drafted for his punt return potential.

MacroGuru

I like everything about Shaw at TE except for his height, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Ben E Lou
12-20-2013, 07:33 PM
Heh. Glad y'all have more faith in Shaw panning out than I do. ;)

WILB Jason Brooks holds out. I can't afford his modest contract request, and don't really care to pay a WILB significantly.

I have enough cap room to sign mentors for my first and second round picks. Apart from that, I fill out the roster with minsal rookies.

TC Key Notes:

TE Shaw is 24/57-->25/50No other significant Preseason/TC Changes.

2021 WEEKS 9-12
2-2, 5-6-1 for the year. The defense appears to be improving with the return of D.J. Hayden during this quarter of the year, but the offense will be without WR Garrett for most of the stretch run due to a minor injury.

2021 WEEKS 13-17
We played very well down the stretch, but a 35-34 loss at Philly doomed us. We close out the year 3-1 to finish 8-7-1. I tend to think part of our struggles this year were just bad dice rolls: we had four losses by a FG or less, and a tie. We were #1 in offense and ended up #21 in yards allowed and #16 in ppg allowed, so not terrible on defense, either. We outscored opponents 449-339. It's a setback, but I think we can recover.

2022 OFFSEASON BEGIN
Only one retirement: minsal mentor RB Eddie Lacy hangs 'em up. He didn't play a single snap in the regular season for us, so I'm not exactly weeping.

LCB D.J. Hayden, now in year 10, gets the franchise tag.

One starter gets cut: SS Nicky Hitchcock. Former undrafted rookie Sedrick Peterson has earned a starting job and is quite a bit cheaper than Hitchcock. Releasing him saves me $7M this year.

Last offseason, we signed two stopgaps at DE. Neither performed particular well. I cut both of them in favor of a couple of other DE signings:

LDE Bo Castillo (49/49, yr 4)--63PRT, 37 PRS. He had a decent year for JAX last season, his first as a starter.
RDE Reggie Jordan (54/54, yr 6)--74 Run Defense, 78 PRT, 33 PRS. He was hurt most of last year, and therefore came fairly cheaply. Had 6 sacks and a 5.1 PRPct in 2020 as a starter for the Lions.

We have the #17 pick in the draft. This time there is a MONSTER stud TE in the draft class: all red combines, and all bars but BPR in the 90ish-100ish range. Last year's stud went #8. I'd think this guy could go #5, so that's where I target my trade-up.

Two questions:

1. Which of your stock game plans is closest to what you're running here? Have you tried different ones?

2. How much attention are you paying to chemistry? How much harder is it to pull your standard chemistry tricks?

2022 AMATEUR DRAFT

We are successful in trading up. We deal our 1st-3rd this year and our 2nd next year to KC for the 1(5) pick to draft the TE we covet.

1(5): TE J.R. Clancy (65/86)--Seems like a can't-miss stud.
4(17): RG Caiden Smith (19/36)--Red strength, blue agility, black in other categories
5(17): FS Alan Gabreleski (17/45)--3 blues, nice bars
6(17): C Ferdinand Zimmerman (11/45)--4 blues, 1 green
7(17): LT Harvey Fulton (22/33)--Red in Sol and STr, blue agi, green dash

Two questions:

1. Which of your stock game plans is closest to what you're running here? Have you tried different ones?

2. How much attention are you paying to chemistry? How much harder is it to pull your standard chemistry tricks?1. Sort of PAV with shorter long passes (35-35-15-10-5) most of the time.
2. I should have mentioned that I have chemistry turned off. I always turn it off in SP. It gives the human an advantage that the AI isn't set up to do. (I have the AI manage my depth charts for a similar reason: if I manage them myself, I can dominate on ST in a way the AI isn't set up to do.

2022 WEEKS 5-8
4-0, still looking strong. We're tied with Denver at 7-1 for the best record in the league. We suffer a key injury in Week 8: RCB Harry Snyder suffers a torn lateral knee ligament and will miss the rest of the season.

2022 WEEKS 9-12
Another 4-0 stretch. The defense is dominating and the offense is doing quite well. The big win during this segment is a 26-0 spanking of Denver in our stadium, giving us a leg up in the race for the division title and #1 seed.

2022 GAMES 13-16
We finish 4-0 to close out the year, but at great cost: QB James breaks his fibula in the #1-seed-clinching game and is going to miss the postseason. We turn to an old friend: Denver had signed Santiago VanderLey, but released him in Week 10. He comes back to Oakland and will lead us in the playoffs.

2023 OFFSEASON BEGIN

Nothing major on the staff or retirements front.
SLB Hudson gets the franchise tag.
One starter is cut: RCB Harry Snyder. After 8 seasons with us, ratings are down to 42/42 and he only played half a season and was unimpressive as a pass defender. Was set to make just too much this year.

I head to free agency looking for help mainly at C, NT, and RCB.

Ben E Lou
12-27-2013, 03:26 PM
I end up not having enough cap room to go high enough on the NT I wanted, so he signed elsewhere. RCB Landon Rhodes (42/42, yr 5,) a solid-looking cover corner, signs fairly cheaply for 3 years. He's also a mentor, so he'd be a nice fit to slide into the nickel slot if I draft a starting-caliber guy in the next few seasons.

2023 AMATEUR DRAFT
I have the 1(28) pick, and by the time it rolls around, there's no one left at C, NT, or CB who seems to be worth a first rounder. However, there is a monster FB left (4 reds, 2 blues, big bars.) I have no idea what sort of value he might bring, but I decide to grab him.

1(28): FB Darren Manusky (46/81)--Seems like he could help out as a run blocker, pass catcher, and ST guy. I'll also crank up the RB running to max.
3(28): C Clifton Tatum (16/47)-1 red and 2 blues, and a position of need.
4(28): P Bart Clayton (28/39)--My current punter is ancient, and this guy looks like he could be a very good one. (2 reds, 3 blues)
5(28): RDE Bryson Monroe (27/47)--DE isn't really a position of need, but seeing a 3-blue guy with decent bars this late made me pull the trigger.
6(28): NT Declan Barrett (29/44)--More of a bars and %developed pick. Looks like he could play soon.
7(28): FS Harry Moorhead (12/32)--Has some KR skills and solid zone. Maybe eventually a decent backup safety.

We're showing the #1 roster in the league. With the weapons that I have at TE and FB, I'm going to increase the short passing a bit.

2023 GAMES 5-8
Cooled off a little. 3-1. We're still playing very well, though. James has 16 Tds and only 2 picks. Stud RG Tanner Munn pulls a hammy in game 7 and will probably miss the rest of the season.

2023 GAMES 9-12
Rough stretch here. 1-3. Another major O-line injury: LG Frankie Hudson (69/69) ruptures an elbow tendon and may not be ready until late next season. Both the passing and running games appear to be struggling now. James's passer rating drops to 94.2. He has only 1 Td and 4 picks in this stretch.

2023 GAMES 13-16
We close out the season 4-0 to finish 12-4, good for the #2 seed in the AFC. The Ravens went 14-2.

2023 POSTSEASON
No contest. We outscore the opposition 110-22 in three games and cruise to our first title. James turned in a 118.9 passer rating in the playoffs and won the FO Bowl MVP by going 23 for 35 for 299 yards with 3 TDs and 0 INTs against the Redskins.

LOOKING BACK 10 YEARS: THE 2014 AMATEUR DRAFT
Now that I've completed 10 seasons, I want to try to remember to do this every year. Original comments copied and pasted, 10-year update in red.

Rnd 1 - Caleb Garrett, WR, Canisius, 39/58...looks like a stud--Maxed out at around 72/72. Played 10 seasons with Raiders. Retired at begin 2024. 700 catches, 9527 yards, 62 TDs, 7.61ypt, 13.61ypc. Best all-around season was probably 2020: 81 catches, 1186 yards, 9 TDs, 8.66ypt.
Rnd 2 - Erick James, QB, Michigan--VU QB, 18/49..not sure what i have here--Grew to around 65/65. 10 years with Raiders and counting. Outstanding pick at 2(1).
Rnd 3 - Jamie Mathis, TE, Louisiana State--22/52..i don't hvae terribly high hopes for him--Maxed in the mid 50s. Was a Raider for six seasons, starting for 4 1/2, before I released him in 2020. He caught on in Buffalo for a year, then signed a long-term deal with Houston, where he is currently a backup. Pretty solid career for a 3(1) guy.
Rnd 4 - Jackson Horn, OLB, Kentucky--14/27...his combines looked good at least! FAIL! Ratings dropped and he never saw the field in a regular season game. Released in 2015 and no one picked him up.
Rnd 5 - Corey Howe, DE, Texas Christian--11/39...PRT guy. Played out all four years of his rookie contract in Oakland as a backup but was not re-signed. NE picked him up as a FA in 2018 and he started theree in 2019 and had 5.5 sacks and 15 hurries. From there he played for two other teams (including us for a season). Overall, he had three seasons as a starter. Maxed at 40/40 overall with 60 PRT.
Rnd 6 - Keith Stone, RB, Georgia Tech--21/24..he needs to grow to be worth anything. Played in five games in 2014. Cut in 2015 for roster room.
Rnd 7 - Chance Bettis, S, North Carolina--10/30..meh. Played two seasons in Oakland as a backup, then released in 2016. Never signed by anyone else.

2024 OFFSEASON BEGIN

SE Caleb Garrett is our only retirement. His career is chronicled in the post right before this one.

No big staff changes--just a new strength coordinator.

No one is franchised.

We head to free agency around $35M over the cap. We have some work to do.

Well done! And excellent idea on the draft too.

I decide to keep most of the team together with a series of cap outs and renegs and only one starter cut: RDE Reggie Jordan. 2nd-year man Bryson Monroe looks ready. With the retirement of SE Garrett, I could use some help at WR, but there's only one guy in FA rated above 41/41: a 52/52 guy who wants much more than I can afford. I fix my gaze upon a 41/41 year 7 guy and make him my single FA1:2 offer. SE Kenny Woods (42/42, yr 7) signs a modest 2-year deal. He is 57 avdr, 37 GD, 42RR, 69BPR, and 23 End.

2024 AMATEUR DRAFT
1(32): WLB Randal Poore (35/53)--I neglected to mention that I released the starter (a 42/42 guy who had only 2 sacks) at this position as well. Poore seems to be a nice improvement there.
2(32): SE Greyson Adams (17/26)--Blue combines in dash, strength, posdrill, red Solecismic. Horrid bars. Worth a look.
3(32): RDT-->NT Kaiden Alder (23/45)--I've only got one NT on the roster, and Alder looks like he could be a decent run stopper one day.
4(32): SLB Aidan Bush (21/39)--Came into this draft with only one OLB under contract. Depth guy.
5(32): RG Bert Roberts (20/31)--Another position where depth is needed pretty quickly.
6(32): LCB Landon Sinclair (9/22)--Has some PR skill and we need one.
7(32): RB Jessie Whitworth (26/32)--Competition is open for RB2 and Whitworth looked like the best RB left.

RATINGS CHANGES OF NOTE

Former stud LG Frankie Hudson, coming off of a ruptured elbow tendon, takes a dive from 69/69 to 35/35. I capped him out, so he'll stick aroundthis season, but he's a certain cut for next year with his scheduled $9.5M salary.
4th round pick SLB Aidan Bush might be more than just the "depth guy" that I described him as above. He went from 21/39-->29/47 in TC/Preseason.

Looks tight at the top in terms of roster: OAK, DAL, and WAS are tied for #1, and three other teams are at 86 or better. With only one true starter-quality WR, we're expecting (and perhaps needing) a breakout year from TE J.R. Clancy

LOOKING BACK 10 YEAR: THE 2015 AMATEUR DRAFT
Post is here: Front Office Football Central - View Single Post - Rebuilding The Raiders: The First FOF7 Dynasty Thread (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showpost.php?p=2882575&postcount=27)

Rnd 1 - Harry Snyder, CB, Virginia--34/66--Maxed at 66/66. Played with Oakland for 8 seasons then finished career in Cleveland.
Rnd 2 - Grayson Amey, WR, Vanderbilt--19/22--4 blue combines. I hope guys like this can grow significantly in FOF7. Workout warrior, I guess. Maxed out at 24/30. Only played 7 games before retiring.
Rnd 3 - Zion Matthews, OLB, Vanderbilt--10/25--Drafted as ILB, moved to WLB. Has 3-4 WLB skillz, it appears. Backup for one season and then cut and never picked up with another team.
Rnd 4 - Nicolas Woolley, DE, Miami, Ohio--15/29--Played out all four seasons of his rookie contract with OAK. Started 8 games his fourth season. Became a FA and was never signed again. Maxed at 34/34.
Rnd 5 - Scott Bookas, S, Colorado State--13/27. Took a ratings dive in preseason of his rookie year. Never played a regular season game.
Rnd 6 - Ralph Gallo, C, Northwestern St., La.--13/37. Maxed out at 20/22. Bounced around the league as a backup until 2019, when KC released him in Regular Season Week 1, never to play again.
Rnd 7 - Fred Fries, RB, Alabama St.--14/23. Didn't make the team in 2015. Never played a regular season snap.

Well THAT was an underwhelming draft.

That's a fine season for a TE, wow.

Well THAT was an underwhelming draft.

It's drafts like these that make FOF7 a much better game than FOF2007.

The 2nd round WR more than likely would of been a great WR with 4 blue combines in the previous version.

2025 OFFSEASON BEGIN
LCB D.J. Hayden and SILB Miles Burris, both starters, retire.
No staff changes
No franchise tag
We head to FA1:1 with 37 players under contract and $16.6M over the cap.

STARTERS CUT
G Frankie Hudson--Major ratings drop and major performance drop.
SE Kenny Woods--Not actually a "starter," but I wanted to list him here for my own info if I read back through and try to figure out what happened to the guy I signed in 2024 FA to start at WR: he basically sat the bench for a year and then got cut. GOOD SIGNING, BEN! :nono:

ROSTER HOLES/STARTER NEEDS
WR2
C
OG
DE
SILB
CB
LS

We're unquestionably going to go into this season with some sub-par guys in place at some of these slots. We have around $10M in cap room to spend in FA to help, and there's not much talent available. Here are our signings:

LDE Bo Castillo (48/48,yr7)--cohesion re-signing
SILB Roman Gray (43/43,yr7)--Pretty decent in run defense and zone.
LS Warren Evans (21/21,yr6)--He is rated 97 in long snapping and has been with us since his rookie season.
SE Maurice Sowers (42/42,yr6)--Cohesion re-signing. Former 7th round draft pick who has been a steady creeper. He might be the full-time WR2 this year.
RCB Ray Wynn (44/44,yr5)--Nothing special, but probably good enough to step in and start.

We head to the draft in need of help on the o-line pretty badly. Rookies could easily start at C and G, and our RT is 46/46 and in year 13.

2025 AMATEUR DRAFT RESULTS
1(29)--LG Connor Marshall (30/52)--This looked like a weak draft overall. Center, our other position of big need, was completely bereft of any obvious talent. Marshall was the best guard in the class.
2(29)--C Corbin Marshall (15/52)--I had this guy as the best center in the draft. *shurg*
3(29)--QB Wes Welch (12/29)--Terrible bars but very solid (5 blue) combines. We're going to need a QB soon, so it seemed like this guy was worth a shot here.
4(29)--RT Jessie Bullock (13/35)--Solid run blocker perhaps.
5(29)--SE Larry Starks (19/31)--Blues in dash, strength, and agility.
6(29)--RB Justin Blake (16/25)--Looks like he could become a solid RB2 option.
7(29)--TE Bruce Kayer (13/29)--Could be decent at run blocking and ST--a nice combo for a TE2.

12-4 regular season and #1 seed in the AFC. Despite losing Donny Finley, our #1 WR, to a knee injury in the first round of the playoffs, we roll to our 2nd title.
