View Full Version : Quarterbacks

I started my first serious career with an allocation draft and I am currently in year 2020 so there have been 6 drafts of game generated talent. Other than the default rosters, there is exactly 1 QB with a current or future rating of 50 or more and that guy is rated just 52.
No QB has been drafted #1 overall.
A QB drafted #3 overall in 2016 is already retired and out of the league without any injury history being listed.
There have been a total of 5 QB's selected in the top 5 of all these drafts combined and everyone is a backup at best.
Is this a small sample size thing being that my league is only in 2020 or has anybody else seen this?
Edited to add: Only 8 QBs have been drafted in all the first rounds so far.

......and the problem is?

In the last 6 NFL drafts, there have been 15 QB's taken in the first round. There have obviously been some huge busts (Tebow anyone?) but there have also been some excellent ones to come along, not to mention QB's picked outside of the 1st round who would be considered to be rated over 50 in FOF game terms.

2 QBs at #1 overall in 9 drafts in my league, 11 taken in the top 5, 29 taken in the first round. I have 11 QBs taken in those 9 drafts who are 50 and up (current) and two more who are 50+ future.

I've simmed a number of seasons ahead and I am seeing about 1 QB a draft coming out with a future rating of 50 plus (much as Ben has), it seems quite rare to see a QB drafted in FOF7 with a future rating of around 70 or higher. Most 6.4 MP leagues have a high number of QB's with 70+ rated QB's at present, this potentially is going to make leagues that convert very unbalanced until 10 or so seasons have passed and the QB's from 6.4 start to retire. Your thoughts?

I agree Sid UNLESS the conversion utility will also modify those types of ratings to bring them down to more equalize the playing field, lets say a 70-80 2007 QB would now be a 50-60 type.

It's not that those guys don't exist though. I found a nice scrambling QB who my scouts thought was properly rated, so I traded up with a Godfather trade to get him. In year 4 of his rookie deal he rightfully held out, because he was a 68/72.

2 QBs at #1 overall in 9 drafts in my league, 11 taken in the top 5, 29 taken in the first round. I have 11 QBs taken in those 9 drafts who are 50 and up (current) and two more who are 50+ future.
For sake of comparison, out of curiosity I checked the last 9 NFL drafts:
9 drafts
5 QBs at #1 (you had 2)
10 in top 5 (you had 11)
24 in the first round (you had 29)
* arguably worthy of a 50+ FOF rating (11 total, you had 9+2)
Aaron Rodgers
Matt Ryan
Joe Flacco
Jay Cutler
Alex Smith
Cam Newton
Matthew Stafford
Andrew Luck
Robert Griffin III
Ryan Tannehill
Sam Bradford
* arguably rated <50 (total 13)
E.J. Manuel (?)
Jake Locker
Jason Campbell
Mark Sanchez
Josh Freeman
Christian Ponder
Brandon Weeden
Brady Quinn
Vince Young
Matt Leinart
Blaine Gabbert
Tim Tebow
Jamarcus Russell
Obviously the sample size is too small to draw any conclusions, but it doesn't look like anything is too far out of whack. Of those 24 QBs drafted in the last 9 NFL drafts, it's hard to say more than 3-5 of them would merit a 70+ rating in FOF.
That said, I agree that typically there is more talent in the player file than talent coming through the drafts. Not sure what can be done about it other than edit the player file and knock a point off off guys rated 4+ and hope for the best (which is what I've done in the past to varying degrees of success).

My suggestion: don't focus as much on the ratings; look at the stats. Is the game generating reasonable stats outputs for QBs?
If the stats from QBs across your league are in line with reasonable NFL stats, then it may mean teams have to pay more attention to the category specific ratings instead of the overall rating to find a QB who is best tailored for the offense that team runs (or edit the team's playcalling and offensive system to best fit the strengths of the QB).
