View Full Version : Veteran Holdouts?!

I have 2 players from my top 3 defense that are holding out. Both are awesome role players but far from stars of the team.

If i choose to not redo their contracts, will they fall in line like 99% of players do in the NFL and play by the start of the season? I am at a loss on how the game handles holdouts so I am not sure what the real risk is.

Any advice on the matter? I checked the help files but searching for 'holdout' didnt come up with any results.

Thanks

Yes...

You can also wait it out and many times they end the holdout once the season starts.

Some won't resign with you if they end their holdout without you giving them a new contract. Once that contract is up, they will give you the line, "Due to past injustices, my client won't resign with your team."

Not sure if all of them do this though.

In one of my games I'm in full rebuilding mode with tons of cap room. Richard Sherman became available in FA. I knew I had a full 3 year rebuild with plenty of cap room. I signed him to a massive 2 year contract and changed his position to the worst one I could. (can't remember what it ended up being) He went to worthless and was out of the league in two year. I smiled. :)

As for my serious single player campaigns, if a guy hold out, he had better be worth it. Clady held out one year. OK, you deserve it, he got a new deal. Mike Adams held out the following year after an average season. He was released before the exhibition season was over.

I chose the browns and traded everything for tom Brady then left the team. Brady can win with any team.. Right?! Nope.. They won 10 games in 4 years... Loved it.

Sounds like someone needs to do a "Breaking Madden" version of Front Office Football.

I almost immediately release a guy who holds out unless the cap hit is going to be huge.

If it's going to be huge, I make him inactive.

I don't pay or play whiners who think they deserve more money than they signed for.

I have my own "Due to past injustices..." script that finds deep joy in a middle-tier player who tries to holdout, then is out of football in two years because, yeah, it's really not that hard to find a 41-rated backup OT who happened to get a bunch of starts due to injury.

I did not think that would be near as funny as it was.

Hate to be the buzz kill but I thought it was pretty dumb. What do you expect would happen when you make a perfect team vs scrubs? Every 12 yr old in the world has done this..

Could also be that I despise madden lol

Well of course everyone knew what was going to happen, but that doesn't mean it isn't funny watching it. Call it purile but a cross between Madden and America's Funniest Home Videos is a recipe for success in my book.

Another Brady hater, eh? Is it the hot wife, the good lucks, the football talent, or all the money?

Maybe this should be a poll. :D

An over rated QB that benefited from a hof head coach, kicker and defense when he won his rings. When they decided to build the team around Brady they have zero rings to show for it.

He is a great qb, just not nearly the legend people make him to be. He went down for a season and what happened? Matt Casel who hasn't done crap anywhere else won 9 games.

Brady gets credit for 3 rings while his kicker and top 5 defense gets forgotten like they didn't have a large hand in the success. What super bowl was it that brady marched down the field for the winning TD? Oh that's right, his kicker bailed him out with clutch kicks at the end of each one.

His first SB is so tainted its silly. Let's not even talk about spygate.. But should we mention the Tuck rule which single handedly gave the pats the AFC championship game?

Belichek is the genius behind that team. Not brady. I'm a giants fan so jealousy has little to do with it when we beat him twice.

Finally, let's discuss how many home loses he has in the AFC championship the last few seasons. He hasn't played well at all and gets zero critisim for it.

I'm by far a minority on this and that's fine. Just my simple opinion..

Wait, you start this rant by calling him overrated but the next paragraph starts by saying he is a great QB?

This is clearly an argument for another thread over in the general forums, but to say Brady is overrated is one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever seen. He won this year with a shitty defense, average special teams, and smoke and mirrors on offense with a limited running game and a bunch of no-name wide receivers.

You don't win 3 super bowls and get to 9 conference championships by being overrated. Some basic Brady career numbers:

18-8 career playoff record
95.7 career QB rating
49,149 career passing yards
359 career passing Td's/134 career Int's
63.4% career completion percentage
9 pro bowls

Over rated doesn't mean you suck. Dictionary perhaps?

Nice stats... Now once again, when the team was built around him, what has he won? He is 8-8 after those rings in the playoffs. When he didn't have a top ranked defense and kicker what doesn't he have to show for it? 0-2 in superbowls.

Wait I'm sorry, he won this year? There are 31 losers every year and he was one of them. Lack of a running game?! Did you not watch any game from mid season? They were a power running team.

The fact is, after his glorious 3 ring run, what does Brady have to show when they decided to build the entire team around him? His championships were all when he was nothing more then a game manager.

Belicheck is the genius. Not Brady. What are his numbers after the 3 rings (over 10 yes ago) 9 wins with Matt Cassel? 8-8 in last 16 playoff games?? 0-2 in superbowls? 2-6 in AFC championship.. Build a team around Brady and you win nothing.

How about we stop living in the past and see what he has done in the last 10 years.

This will be two parts, off topic, on topic:

Off topic:

Brady lost one of those Super Bowls when the refs decided holding didn't exist anymore and a guy made the luckiest catch in the history of professional sports. Kind of overboard to throw that one on him. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who cannot stand him or the Patriots.

On topic:

As I said above, it all comes down to the player holding out. If it's a poor player ratings wise who had a massive year, I try to equate it to real life. I get it, you outperformed your 1.2 million dollar deal when you had 13 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. This is the last chance at a big contract you have. If it's reasonable, I'll try to negotiate something fair. If it's unreasonable, I will try to trade him before I release him.

If this is a superstar who deserves the raise, again, he gets it. Chris Harris did it in one of my games (one where he was a massive stud) Umm, yeah, it isn't very reasonable for me to expect I'll get a pro bowl CB for 1.5 million. I paid him.

Where I come down hard are two cases:

1) A player who had an average or below average season. Screw you pal. You aren't getting crap. If I can get value out of you in a trade, you are gone. If I can't and the cap hit is too big, I'll gladly keep you inactive until your contract runs out. If I can release you before the season starts with my cap situation, you are gone.

2) The Osi type of player. You know, the star who you give a huge deal to and he spends the first 2 years hurt and pathetic even when he wasn't hurt. Then he has a big year in the third year of the deal and holds out. That guy will NEVER play another down for me. I don't care. Trade, rot on inactive, release. . . whatever. He is dead to me.

Has Brady really been to 5 Super Bowls and lost 4 AFC championships? Wow, that's extremely impressive. He sat one year and was injured for another.
