The negative exponent is just a reciprocal of the positive one.

Nearly all 7th grade math problems can be solved, on Wolfram Alpha. Here's the link to this problem: https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=simplify+%286d%29^-2

If you get the ipad App you can even get it to show you step by step instructions though there aren't any for this problem.

Unless your kid is an Honors class, a 7th grader has no business messing with negative exponents.
