IWS #217 - The World Cup

1. Based on 2010, we can expect roughly 700 million people (or more) to watch the World Cup Final. What percentage of this audience will know the original name of the World Cup Trophy?

11 - 10%
4 - 25%, 1%
3 - 5%
2 - 20%
1 - 30%, 0%

The answer, of course, is the Jules Rimet Trophy. Personally, my guess would have been 1%, but we know Stupid loves his round numbers.

2. Thirty-Two teams will take part in the World Cup Finals Tournament that starts in Brazil on 12 June. Of these, how many really have a legitimate shot at winning it all?

9 - 5 Teams
6 - 10 Teams
5 - 8 Teams
4 - 4 Teams
1 - 7 Teams, 3 Teams

I wondered how many would go for 10 given it was a round number, when it's unlikely that 10 have a "real" chance to win. In this instance it would appear that Stupid feels that 5 is a good round number.

3. Besides Brazil, which nation has historically played the most enjoyable and entertaining type of soccer at the World Cup Finals (i.e. the games of the tournament, not just the final match)?

11 - Spain
4 - Holland, Italy, Argentina
1 - France, USA, Portugal

May have been more competitive if I left Brazil in, to be honest. Stupid knows all about Spain given that they've been on top of the world for 6+ years now. Hard to beat that.

4. Besides Germany, which nation has historically played the most efficient and soul-destroying type of soccer at the World Cup Finals (i.e. the games of the tournament, not just the final match)?

14 - Italy
4 - England
2 - France
1 - Germany, Argentina, Holland, Spain, Brazil, USA

Stupid knows soccer better than I thought he would, and understood that Italy more-or-less invented negative football. I'm sure a person or two wanted to pick Uruguay who, in the depths of history, were known for literally mugging their opponents.

5. The four largest countries by population in the world are China, India, the United States and Indonesia (Brazil is fifth). These four have never won a World Cup, nor even come especially close, despite accounting for over 35% of the world's population. How many years will it be before one of these four countries wins the World Cup?

7 - 20 years
5 - 100 years
4 - 40 years
2 - 16 years, Never, 50 years, 8 years
1 - 24 years, 10 years

Note that any answer not divisible by 4 is automatically impossible, something not particularly lost on Stupid (amazingly) this time around. A good spread here, but 20 years honestly seems too soon.

6. Despite being the birthplace of soccer, England has only won the World Cup once, in 1966, and since then has developed a national fatalism around this fact (yes, I'm editorializing). How many years will it be before England wins the World Cup again?

8 - 20 years
3 - 40 years, 50 years
2 - 100 years, 52 years, 16 years, 12 years
1 - 25 years, 48 years, 60 years, Never

I love all the answers that got 2 or 1 votes. Someone pointed out that in 52 years it'll be 2066, which is probably the best answer of the lot, though knowing England they'd just crumble under the anticipation again....

I figured stupid would think other people were stupid, and said 1% for the first question. If I would have gone with 10%, I would have won.

I knew 52 years for England was a bit too cheeky.

The good work Holland did in the past was kind of undone in South Africa, MIJB.

Don't remember my answers off the top of my head, but I think I went a little higher on both of the "how many years until ____" questions. Good to know we can pencil in England and USA/China/India for 2 of the next 5 Cups :D

I've been browsing through all the World Cup results over the past week. I got reminded how boring Spain were in 2010: they scored 8 goals in 7 games in 2010, winning all their knockout games 1-0, making them the first world champions to score less than 11 goals for the tournament.

Or is this just a bump to remind the winner that he won? ;)
