I respectfully refuse to answer the question, as I am certain you are in cahoots with Pumpy Tudors and have a plan to make the amount $0.

$115 to be exact. Surprised as I usually don't have that much. I would think $40-$60 is more the norm. Pretty much all I use cash for now is a random lunch at places with higher card mins, fruit/veggie street guy, or if I'm going to a bar where I usually don't like running a tab cause that's how a bunch of shots end up happening.

I don't usually carry cash at all. That being said, there's $26 in my "key dish" at home. $18 because I took $20 out of the ATM so I could get a hot-dog at the grocery store on Sunday, and $8 leftover from last week's similar expense.

About the only thing I use cash for now is when I go to get my $9 pizza on Friday night's and pay with a $10 and let them keep the change. So that $26 will be two weeks worth of pizzas.

Pretty much always $0 in cash these days.

I've actually stopped carrying my wallet for the most part. I generally carry my ID and my bank card in my pocket or put them in a baggie if I am out running or biking.

I have a huge 5 gallon jug of coins that I started filling up 15 years ago. It got half way in the first 2-4 years.. since then it has hardly moved at all. Change just seems obsolete these days in most things.

$40 now because thats whats left over from my last trip out to a bar with friends. I try to only operate on cash those nights unless its dinner as well.

Only time I ever have cash is when I go out with friends, put the tab on my card, with my friends giving me cash.

I generally grab a couple hundred, which will last me several months, then I run on empty for several more months until cash is required. At which point I grab another couple hundred.

Right now I have $0.

I have $26 right now, but only because I got the cash from a friend after including a purchase on my card.

99% of the time I literally have a "lucky" 5 dollar bill in my wallet and that's it. Everything goes on debit or credit.

$125. I use cash for gas, food shopping, and....yeah, that's about it. I try to keep myself on a budget and that $125 covers everything (theoretically) that isn't monthly bills until Friday. But currently "everything" is gas and food shopping, so it hasn't been much of a problem. In fact, it being more than ~$70 today (Monday and I just put gas in the car) means I'm running a surplus!

Not trying to derail the thread but those are probably the two categories more than any other that are great reasons to have a credit card that earns points/cash back. If you've never considered it...

As the heir to an Iowa farm and currently living in the Texas Panhandle, there's probably something to both those characterizations. :)

But yeah, it's not so much the "flush with cash" thing as the "unusually wary of banks" thing, coupled with a healthy dose of "who's going to mug me in the middle of 100 acres of corn?"

I remember reading about my grandparents getting robbed on a bus on a trip to California in the '70s. My grandfather had about $2K on him, and that wasn't because of the out-of-state trip - that was just, you know, part of the harvest money. It literally never occurred to him that he'd get pistolwhipped and mugged, so he had the wad he always carried.

Ahhh yes, the the ones that do their banking at the Bank of Coffee Can Buried In the Back Yard :)

I do sometimes sell male calves and the guy will give me a wad of cash instead of a check. Which I promptly report said income to the IRS.

Yes, I have one of those. I go back and forth on using it. I don't buy much gas (fuel efficient car and I don't go anywhere) and it's just me for food. I'm only missing out on a few bucks every month by not using it, and that gets wiped out if I buy just one thing I don't need (and that will happen because credit card = play money in my dumb brain). If I stick to just cash, it's impossible for me to get lazy keeping track of my spending and accidentally going over budget.

since gas stations around here charge 3%-5% more for credit card purchases, I usually pay for gas with cash. the 1% cc cash back isn't enough incentive.

sterlingice

I basically carry around an "emergency $20" but that's all the cash I ever have unless it's something odd (pay with card for multiple people, get cash back- that sort of thing). I keep another bit of cash hidden in my car for parking, tolls, emergencies, etc- but it's never more than $50. I use card for everything and get reward points. The points from regular spending and signup bonuses paid for a big chunk of our trip to Russia last year. It was really nice when we could pay for our apartment with cc but then they put a $20 fee on it so we stopped.

We don't have a lot of credit card fees on gas here yet but I'm sure it's coming. It's easy price discrimination to get back card fees. A lot of people will forego your service if you don't take CC but if you just charge them 1-2% to make up the difference, I doubt you'd lose a ton of customers because most people don't think of that as a lot of money even though it can add up.

I buy like 13-15K worth of gas per year, I'd def carry more cash if I could actually save money by using it.

I keep what I term "hole money" pigeon holed away in my wallet. hidden behind stuff.

Usually ~500 occasionally it will build up higher and ill stick some in the bank.

But in spending money about $220 currently.

I really like cash and frequently find my self in places that (Still) dont take credit cards...so I keep some green near by. And it has served me well to run up on a random deal or need to get a tow and having a driver do it for $50 cash or $200 on a ticket etc.

This thread made me think of this Mitch Hedberg bit:

This product that was on TV was available for four easy payments of $19.95. I would like a product that was available for three easy payments and one fucking complicated payment. We can't tell you which payment it is, but one of these payments is going to be a bitch. The mailman will get shot to death, the envelope will not seal, and the stamp will be in the wrong denomination. Good luck fucker. The last payment must be made in wampum!

R.I.P. Mitch.
