View Full Version : Sound the Steam Summer Sale Alert!

Starting in about an hour from when I post this, the 2014 steam summer sale is back... to either give us great deals and encourage us to try games which we've heard about but don't want to pay full price (charitable view) or to suck our wallets dry as we add more games to an ever growing backlog that we will never EVER clear (addict's view)

I might finally pick up Shadowrun, but I think my wallet is safe otherwise.
I still have plenty of backlog from the Xmas Steam Sale.

Well batch one is pretty underwhelming. No risk to my wallet at all.

Round 1 is mostly games I've already played, so nothing for me so far.
The Witcher 2 at $3.99 and Hotline Miami for $1.49 are both steals. Don't Starve, FarCry 3 + Blood Dragon, Mirror's Edge and the XCOM reboot are all really good as well.

Democracy 3 I'm half-tempted on. Starved for a good political sim, but I remember Democracy 1 being quite boring after a couple playthroughs, and I've heard 2 and 3 do very little to expand on the core mechanic.

Democracy 3 was very fun for 30 minutes until you figure out how the core game mechanic works and then I got a 90% approval rating and haven't touched it since. Would stay away

Impressions on The Witcher? How does it compare to something like Skyrim, if at all?
And would controls be terrible on a laptop?

The Witcher 2 is fantastic, in my top 25 for games I've ever played. Not nearly as open world as Skyrim, but there's room for a little variation. Controls would be awful unless you had a mouse.

You're probably going to suck at combat for a little while. It gets better.
Also, the first main boss has a little bit of a glitch in the boss fight - if you die repeatedly and you really don't think you should be dying, probably worth looking up the glitch. It doesn't affect every system, so don't bother looking it up unless you're stuck.

Had my first "what the hell" moment. Always heard good things about Hotline: Miami. Figured at $1.49 I wasn't really losing anything. (except $1.49, I know) Will give it a whirl tonight.

Similar to TroyF, I went ahead and purchased Witcher 2. I'm not at all a big PC (or in my case Mac) gamer, but watched a couple reviews online and it looks like something that I should get value out of at that price.

PilotMan
06-20-2014, 10:39 AM
I've played it a few times and I'm not very good at it. It's a casual, survival, rouge-like game where death is dealt frequently. A game you can pick up and put down fairly easy. I know it's a lot deeper then I've gotten with it.
You walk around collecting things in real time, craft things, survive the night, eat, your stuff wears out. Just as it says, in the end, don't starve.

Went for Lucius for $4.99. Kind of like the Hitman series only in the roll of a 6 year old son of Satan bumping off staff in unfortunate "accidents" instead of a contract assassin. Not bad, looks nice, but very linear. There's only one way of doing each mission, not open to different strategies like Hitman is.
Not bad for $4.99 though.

Agreed, it's not that similar to Skyrim but it's a much better RPG and one I'd put in my top 25 too.

The co-op is great but it's not nearly as much fun single player.

Same boat for me, I haven't got that far into it yet but I think it's pretty good. It's my second favorite of the Minecraft style exploration/resource collecting/crafting genre games after Terraria.

Don't really see anything I'd recommend today other than Telltale's The Walking Dead and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger from the flash deal.
I didn't really like State of Decay, Game Dev Tycoon is kinda interesting to play because of the concept but I don't think it's actually a good game, and Bound by Flame came out to terrible reviews a couple months ago. Dynasty Warriors 8 is one I'm interested in getting but not at the current sale price.

Where does walking dead stand as far as "season 2" episodes? Are there more to come or is this season done? My plan has been to wait for the next steam sale after the final episode is released this time around.

I have a bunch of games on my wish list that need to hit $9.99 to pull the trigger:
Banner Saga
Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes
Endless Legend
Crusader Kings II
Total War: Shogun 2
Frozen Endzone
And I have 2 that need to hit $19.99 or under:
Age of Wonders 3
South Park: The Stick of Truth
I suspect most of those will be misses until the Christmas sale, but I'm guessing one or two of the ones from the 9.99 group will pop this month.

Already wading in with both Witcher games (though everyone likes the second one, I figured a buck and change on the first one was worth trying out) and the X-Com expansion. Just bought in on Papers Please since everyone raves about it and also the DLC for Shadowrun. As a bonus I actually netted a foil Summer Sale card in the deal and since I've got zero interest in doing any badge building this time, it looks like I can make at least three bucks back for it based on the going rate in the market.

The depth issue hasn't bothered me nearly so much after the first bit of playing as simply how slow & incapable I seem to be. I'm pretty sure only getting through 4-6 "customers" per day ain't gonna cut it.

Without wanting to derail the thread, I think this was exactly why this was such a great little game. It's a genuine conflict of interest whether you try to go as fast as you can to make some money or if you take your time and get it right - and the family dynamic and the storylines just make it even more interesting as time goes on.
I don't know what they could possibly do to follow it up, but I'd love to see something else along these lines.

Too bad you can't buy just the dlc for five bucks.
You can buy the game + dlc for $10, or you can buy just the dlc for $10, wtf?
ncludes 10 items: Borderlands 2, Borderlands 2 - Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty, Borderlands 2 - Psycho Pack, Borderlands 2: Collector's Edition Pack, Borderlands 2: Creature Slaughterdome, Borderlands 2: Mechromancer Pack, Borderlands Mr Togues, SIr Hammerlocks, TIny Tina, and the Ultimate Vault Hunters PACK.
10 bucks. cant pass it up.

I have actually never purchased the Skyrim DLC for this exact reason. Any game that does this will find me not purchasing their DLC going forward as well. I simply do not understand why it cheaper to buy the entire game with the DLC than it is to buy just the DLC...this far after release. If they can mark the game with the DLC down that much they can mark JUST the DLC down more than they already are.

I got invited to a "Team Green" group a couple days ago. The daily scoreboard is organized, each day a different team is scheduled to win and the members of that team are encouraged to craft all their badges that day. So you're correct, each team will win twice, unless one of the teams somehow secretly plots against another one to steal their day (which would be awesome).

You can sell them on the marketplace if you just want Steam Wallet credit. If you craft a badge, you get some XP towards your next Steam "level" and some minor doodads like a background for your profile, Steam emoticons, that kind of thing.
The only thing the Steam "level" really impacts, other than your e-peen, is that it'll probably be a gateway towards participating in the community elements of future sales. I think you had to be Steam level 8 to be able to participate in the 'teams' this summer, for example. Not level 8? Not eligible to win any games off your wishlist.

Yes, it's playable. I probably have about 10 hours in it and then shelved it until it's released for want of a trowel to plant things. There has been at least two major patches since then (including Multiplayer, which I wouldn't bother with). I tend to do that with Early Access games, so that's not a negative. But the time I spent with it was enjoyable. Can't recall any glaring bugs and this was months ago (I last fired it up in February).
No, it doesn't remind me of anything else and that's a good thing. You wake up in Zombieland and it's up to you to survive, often with the help of luck. It's rather unforgiving and gathering the resources needed can be a bear. The game starts off with "This is How You Died", so you know death is inevitable. You go and collect weapons, food, water, entertainment and try to establish your safe haven. After a while, the power goes out and so you better be growing your food, finding a water source, building fences to keep out the zoms and so forth (never made it that far). It's just zombie survival without glamour. Your character isn't a superhero and he's not going to save the world. He's just trying to get by and it ain't easy. Sometimes drinking bleach and ending it all seems like the best alternative.
The game is there. It's tense, tough and getting deeper all the time. There are still a lot of things to add - NPCs, vehicles and a much more complete map. So there's more to come and updates have been sporadic with this team.
Overall, I'd say it's worth the $10 if you like survival games.

Decent story - it resonates with some more than others - and an interesting (if occasionally difficult) gamepad control method that is somewhat important to the story. It's really not old-school in that the puzzles aren't that difficult. It's more the story + controls. Worth $5 for the 2-3 hours of gameplay involved. A steal at $3.

It's been reduced %70 to 3 bucks and its a couple of years old and an indie game to boo that takes between 3-6 hours to play. But I don't know if I have ever had such an emotional and visceral experience playing a video game like I did with To the Moon.
No spoilers, ever. Don't look it up. Just grab it, set aside enough time to play it through in one go like you would a movie, and sit back and enjoy the story unfold.
It's a quirky use of RPG Maker to make a non-RPG game. I could not give hit higher marks for the quality of the story and the marks therein. It's not a strong video game. But calling it a video game is like calling Windosill one too.

It's quite solo friendly at this point - the player base isn't too big and mostly people group to run instances, sort of the dungeons. But you can solo the rest and it's very workable for that.

Thoughts on Banner Saga? Half off right now, but still just outside my preferred price point.
The silly combat system keeps me away. I love turn based combat, but I can't get my head around giving the losing side extra opportunities as they lose units.
In short, if it's 6 on 6 and you kill 3 of their troops, then the other 3 will now get 2 times as many turns as they would before. If you've killed 5 of the 6, that last troop will now have 6x as many turns. It's an absurdity that was made the in the name of multiplayer balance but kills any chance of me spending more than $5 on it because I want to play the single player game.
In short, your best tactic is to whittle the computer player's units down to 1 HP each and then kill them all. How fucking dumb is that?

I definitely disliked that aspect. I played it back when it came out and thinking back, there was a lot I didn't like about the combat system. But, the story kept me playing it. And just to clarify, if you kill all but one of the troops, they no longer get extra attacks. However, if the enemy has 2 or more troops left, then it works like Blackadar said.

Bought Wolf Among Us while it was on sale on the front page a couple of days back. Telltale games sure know how to tell a story! Can't wait for Episode 5!
This is the only possible game I'll get this round of sale.

Nope, the WTF didn't impress me. It seems like Divinity OS lite, without the freedom. I already own Divinity OS, but have only played it sporadically during early access since updates destroy saves. It officially releases Monday, so it will be my current RPG of choice. Holds lots of promise IMO from the time I have played it.

Ever seen a bad movie?
Then $10 bucks for a game that you would play for more than 4 hours is a bargain. Lets say you get 8-10 hours. A steal
Bad movies don't last even 2 hours.

I think you may have just illustrated why it's so rare for me to go to the movies.
My line of thinking goes more like "that's no bargain, that's a mistake" though, which is why I'm so picky about buying games as well.

I'm the biggest Total War sucker out there (I own everything) but even I haven't bought Rome II. What's it down to in price? If it was like...under $10 then maybe I'd do it just to see how those graphics actually look in play. But I can't imagine it's that cheap yet.

I've been playing Blackguards quite a bit. It's a bit different from other hexagon turn based games where you have a lot of options per character and is based on a percent change of connecting. The story is pretty good and there's never a what should I do next. I will admit that the game is fairly difficult (although I am playing on the hard level)
I will say, there's nothing more frustrating than missing a critical hit when you have a 90% or 95% of success.

So other than a couple of indie games that I probably would have paid full price for if I'd have seen the promoted, I haven't spent any money during this sale. only thing that remotely interested me is Stick of Truth but $40 for that amount of gameplay still doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

I thought I was going to escape the Steam sale without a single purchase but just got the season of The Wolf Among Us as it fell below my $10 purchase point. Wolf Among Us is great. The second chapter seems to be the low point so far as it seems to steer you toward the next part of the story and leaves you with little control over things but so far I have enjoyed the hell out of it.

Early access was basically the first area and I got 13 hours out of it without finishing everything. According to the developer the game will release with 60-100 hours of content depending on playstyle. Mod tools also release with the game tomorrow so community support should extend that even further.
The only negative thus far is some of the additional followers have been delayed to a patch sometime after release.
If you're a fan of isometric RPGs then this is a must buy as far as I'm concerned. I've had the itch, but just haven't been able to get into the re-releases of the Baldur's Gate games. Fantastic game so far.

Agreed, the combat alone makes this a great game as you have to factor in environments, cover (which is destructible) and make careful use of your AP's. On top of that the quests and storylines are really well done from what I have uncovered to date. Lot's of potential for mod makers and DLC as time goes on too.

Single player is how I've been playing. Co-op isn't really something that interests me in a game like this. The controls are intuitive as far as switching between party members, ect.

I think you'll be fine going straight to Wasteland 2 as the series aren't really connected apart from the same type of setting, but don't buy Wasteland 2 now. It's still in early access and not the type of game that's worth playing in that state and it will probably be cheaper than $40 when it releases.
And as far as getting into the Fallout series you can really start with any game, aside from a few passing references the events of the games are not connected.
