View Full Version : Fantasy Football Dynasty Auction Questions

After the initial few post-college years where we weeded out the guys who flaked out or didn't want to keep doing it with families, we've got a core group of 10 who are going to start a dynasty league. Slightly different than a keeper league in that we'll have like 10-12 keepers each, with no cost associated to them, and since it's year 1 everyone's available - so clearly this first auction is going to be huge. (Future drafts will be reverse order of standings, with no auction/salary cap in place - so draft AJ Green for $80 and it's probably an overpay, but he won't cost anything for the next 10 years.)

- Does Luck or Rodgers become your #1 QB, and would you pick them 3rd after AJ Green/Calvin Johnson, or is QB so deep it's not worth going after them early? Assuming a normal $200 auction fund, what sort of value does that make a Peyton Manning, Brady/Brees? I'm leaning towards the latter, and then figuring I can find a new QB in the next 2-3 years with all the rookies entering, but it does all depend on how other people treat it.

- Right now we've initially agreed on 4pt QB TD's, and .5 PPR (everything else standard I think, except no return yards and we're tweaking defensive scoring so points and yards allowed is as least as important as sacks and turnovers). Normally I love that for yearly leagues, but with the way the league is going (platoon RB's, more passes every year) should I argue that PPR should be eliminated entirely or dropped to .25 per reception? Right now I'm seeing very little reason to purchase any RB close to the top WR's - does anyone have faith in Shady McCoy being an elite RB in 3 years? Certainly not close to the faith I have in Green, Johnson, even Jimmy Graham at their positions. Is this worth arguing, or should I keep my mouth shut and just try to game the system?

In general I love this idea, but it's definitely something where 1 initial draft will have a significant impact for a few years, and it's such a weird situation there's really no online site that provides a good framework or an easy way to do a mock draft. Anyone have experience with this format? Something obvious I'm missing that I'll be kicking myself for missing?

To me it depends on if you want to win now or down the road. McCoy is still only 26. For younger backs, you're gambling a bit regarding whether or not they will be the kind of performer Shady has been. With receivers, you only get the PPR and receiving yards, and they tend to be a lot less reliable week to week for points. It is rare McCoy won't produce 100 AP yards.

Passers with 4 point TD's.. I don't really see a need to overpay unless you can get Rodgers without breaking the bank.

Your best pick ups in a league like this ultimately will be the waiver wire guys that you hit the jackpot on during the season. The starting roster is fairly trivial when it comes to long term winning in my opinion when you have that many keepers. You pay a premium for just about any player who has a chance to be a long term stud.

Injury prone guys are wasteful spending.

The way I see it, the backs you take now that will keep you at the top of the league can hopefully be replaced by young guys several years down the road. There are enough receivers out there to get one cheaper, but there are only a few backs you can really hang your hat on. To me, they come first. McCoy/Charles, maybe even Gio Bernard if you want a guy that might come a bit cheaper. No matter what, the guys who can line up in the slot and run it as well are the cream of the crop in PPR.

Guys like Michael Floyd, Brandin Cooks, Sammy Watkins.. Those are the receivers I would go for. Guys that are going to be great or that are still on the rise rather than established studs. You can tell that in a WR a lot easier than you can a RB, IMO.

Ended up dropping big money ($55 each) on Megatron/Jimmy Graham early. Maybe they won't produce like Shady or Charles, but it's less likely that one ACL tear can ruin my team. Spent $23 on Manning, but then went mostly for some high-upside WR's who might not be ready this year. Ended up with 3 mid-range RB's (Bush, Spiller, Mathews) at cheap prices.

QB (1): Peyton Manning $23, Philip Rivers $1 (What am I missing about Rivers - I think he's a borderline top 5 QB who's only had 1 bad season in the last 7, and probably has 5 good years left, and no one rates him highly.)
RB (2 + 2 Flex): CJ Spiller $12, Ryan Mathews $11, Reggie Bush $9, Knile Davis $2, Benny Cunningham $1
WR (2 + 2 Flex): Calvin Johnson $55, Sammy Watkins $17, Reggie Wayne $2, Dwayne Bowe $2, Tavon Austin $2, Justin Blackmon $1, Danny Amendola $1
TE (1): Jimmy Graham $55, Tim Wright $1
K: Blair Walsh $1
DEF: Jets $1

Ended up with 4 dollars left over... should have tried to spend the couple extra dollars on a better D (New England only went for 3) or maybe a flier on Bortles or Marqise Lee, both of whom went for $3 too. And I'm definitely banking on one of those WR's with a pedigree (Watkins, Austin, Blackmon) or Knile Davis turning into a star caliber player in the next 2 years, but I'll take it.
