Maryland will wear "Star Spangled Banner" jerseys this weekend against WVU to honor the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore.
I dig the outline of Fort McHenry on the helmet.

I wonder how many Top 25 games in the past few years that haven't involved Bama or Oregon have had more expectations of being very ugly?

The two tackles for Texas are still suspended. But the good thing is that the offensive line this week has twice the number of career starts as last week. The bad thing is the number of career starts is 10, with 5 of them coming last week.

Man, I would love to see your team wake up and just be strong for the rest of the season.
I am dumbfounded at some of the stuff I am reading, and I am taking it all with a grain of salt but it seems to me Strong has his players a little confused on what he wants.

cartman - Is Strong going to give Heard a shot? I saw him at Guyer, and while I think he was overrated, he cant be worse than Swoopes can he? If y'all dont find a way to keep defenses honest with a passing game, yall may not hit .500. Fix the offense and I'm positive it helps the D.

I miss seeing Lavell Edwards Stadium and being there. It is honestly one of the greatest backdrops for a stadium there is.

Swoopes didn't play too bad last week. He was hitting consistently on short and medium passes, and they never really let him make many down field throws. I put the offensive struggles on the O-Line. There were zero holes for the RBs. I realize they were stacking the box, but even so, there was just nothing for the runners to try and take advantage of. Not sure if the reason for no down field throws was that they didn't think the O-Line could consistently hold hold blocks, if Swoopes didn't show consistency with those throws in practice, or a combination of the two. Evidently, for Heard, the issue is that he's having a hard time picking up the playbook.

So I guess since technically UCLA vs Texas in Dallas is a "neutral" site, both teams will be in their home unis. For UCLA, that means their colorful blue and gold unis, which are great. I am hoping that means we get the burnt orange for Texas, which I assume is their home unis. cartman, can you confirm?
Visually, that will be fun to see (similar for me with how USC and UCLA now play with home unis in their series).

UW gets a BIG10 team at home when we face Illinois. We are pretty big favorites, but this game has me concerned comsidering we have looked rather unimpressive barely beating Hawaii and Eastern Washington.
If we take care of business we get Georgia State at home the following week which should put us at 4-0 when Stanford rolls into Seattle.

I'm still on the fence this week because of the 11 AM start (and lack of people willing to make the trip with me) but if I am there my brother's tailgate is right outside the east entrance to the stadium (Over where the vendors set up) I am definitely going to Indiana if you, Mizzourah, Kodos, etc are looking for a tailgate.
My wife is due soon with twins so the September games may be the last live ones I make for a few seasons. (For sure for this season) I hope she understands when I come back from the IU game with a serious case of the Mizzou flu.

Not really for Rutgers, at least until the money starts rolling in more heavily in a couple years. But either way, I've heard the buyout will be covered with private money if the season goes to shit, so that's not really an issue. This was all about stability for recruiting. I just question the timing. All these stud recruits visiting for the Penn State game will have an amazing time as long as we don't get blown out, despite any potential lame duck status of Flood. And if we do get blown out, having a coach with an extension won't help any.
General Mike
09-11-2014, 11:37 AM
Now that you're in the Big Ten, that's still chump change.
Sure, but we aren't getting a full share right away. Our revenue from the Big ten this year will be similar to what it would have been in the Big East / AAC last year. Either way reportedly it's being funded by boosters

So, since the buyout will be funded by boosters, why the consternation?
Logan
09-11-2014, 11:51 AM
So, since the buyout will be funded by boosters, why the consternation?
Well, that came out after the initial news for one. But more importantly, I still hesitate to believe that Rutgers/donors will step up when the time comes. Last year, Flood was gone...the buyout was going to be paid by boosters, but the problem was, those same boosters' eyes (for a new coach) were bigger than their stomachs (wallets). So when we couldn't get who we wanted at the price we could pay, they made the decision to keep Flood. Just horrible mismanagement, and it's a large part of the reason there was so much instability which needed to be corrected with this extension.
So adding another $700K on top of that just reduces what could be done with that money in the future. Not to mention that same uneasiness about what will happen at "put up or shut up" time. And as noted above, until we better recover from years of poor revenue in the AD, figures like that will matter.
I'll say though, things have seemed to change a good amount over the past 8 months or so as the ramp-up to the B1G entrance has come, so I do have a bit more confidence than I previously did.
General Mike
09-11-2014, 11:55 AM
So, since the buyout will be funded by boosters, why the consternation?
Because this is Rutgers and there is the fear from the fan base that they don't want to spend money on athletics. Rutgers had to buy out 4 basketball coaches during the last 13 years and has continued a death spiral of paying coaches near the bottom of the power conferences. I'm not even sure that Eddie Jordan isn't the lowest paid coach in the Big Ten.
I guess there is also the fear that if Rutgers looks non competitive the rest of the season, that they won't be willing to make a change

The one thing I noticed is he obviously doesn't have the knack of previous OC's to just accept 'Bama as a running team and do a series or so of challenging the other team in their manhood and simply pound the running game. It seemed like before if 'Bama got away from it and were struggling they would flip the running game switch and pull off a impressive running game heavy drive for a TD. Sometimes they would only run during it. I honestly kind of miss that.

Two straight turnovers in Michigan territory lets M(OH) tie it at 10-10. A 8-4 or so year can keep Hoke around, but any possible loss here is going to start to generate too many pitchforks to ignore. M(OH) got manhandled by Marshall and lost to E. Kentucky. This has no reason to be tied well into the 2nd quarter.

09-13-2014, 05:53 PM
A very questionable defensive holding call gives ISU a first down and moves them into FG range. ISU drains the clock and kicks the FG. Unless Purdue beats ND, Big Ten go 2-6 OOC in a week where teams should be looking for easy wins. The conference might soon be 1-10 against the other Power 5 conferences.

Iowa loses, Big 10 goes down again. Ferentz really botched that one. Too conservative as usual running HB draws on 3rd and 6 and then punts from the opposing 36. Then with a minute left everyone in the building knows ISU is just going to milk the clock and kick a long FG with no time left and Ferentz does not call a TO until 30 seconds runs off. Even the announcer says what the hell is he doing? Then he gives the ISU kicker a practice kick with the ninja TO, the kicker missed the first one, makes the second.

They did, they converted and got flagged for offensive PI.. so rather then go for 2 from the 17 they took the sure point.

Penn State gutted it out. Wasn't pretty. There should have been a 10 second run off on Rutgers after the illegal forward pass. Either way the Lions are 3-0 but need to do some serious work on their oline.
Best of luck to the Rutgers fans on the board the rest of the season.
Thinking about it, there just aren't that many good OLs in the Big Ten right now. OSU's and Michigan's are well known for their struggles. MSU is breaking in a new live. This will likely play out as to why a team could sneak in as a dark horse this year.
PSU should go 5-0, but then the fun starts.

Boy, almost had the perfect day as a Mizzou fan. Mizzou wins big over a good UCF team. Georgia gets beat by South Carolina. Only bad thing was the blown delay of game call that wasn't called against Florida, allowing them to beat Kentucky. Still a good day overall.

Sark = Kiffin. Terrible offensive playcaller. The scary thing is, Shaw is worse.
Yeah, that was brutal. He showed some creativity in the 4th but was way too conservative early. The defensive play calling was even worse. BC was completely one dimensional and USC was completely ineffective in stopping them. Such a frustrating game to watch.

Who is 0-2 and ranks 117th in points scored and 97th in points against? Even if you want to say they lost to PSU who is 3-0, PSU is 109th in points scoring and that's with a so called future first round draft pick at QB. Yes, they were good last year but that's last year.

I won't go as far as MBBF and call them a good team but what kind of monkey math are you using? Mizzou blows them out and they have only played one other game so you use their combined points for and points against with the Mizzou blowout and ONE other game? Pretty disingenuous there. So the 38 Mizzou put up and the 10 they allowed might skew those numbers? Get outta here!

Say what you want. I watched them play and they have good talent. They returned their entire starting defense. The offense obviously has a new QB, but they still have a very good running game. At the end of the year, that will be a good win.

ESPN's rankings. Also, they gave up 26 to the 109th points scoring offense, so maybe giving up that many to a much better team isn't that surprising. And yes, their numbers will improve due to their lukewarm schedule.

Man, I was at the RU game, pretty amazing experience, glad I joined my friends on their season tickets.
That being said, Gary Fucking Nova. Talk about single-handedly losing a game. If I were a defender, I may have punched him. Every time RU got a turnover, he gave it back. RU with a big stop on 3rd down, Nova pick. Those 3 second half picks were terrible. What kind of QB with time running out runs 8 yards down the field, stops runs backwards and throws a pass? It's as if he has almost no clue how to play sometimes. The big sting was when he missed 2 wide open WRs on 3rd down with 3 mins left. A first down there probably would have won it.
I can't believe they gave Flood another year and that we are going to continue to play the joke known as Nova. In what has basically been 3 full seasons he has 45 picks. He pads his stats against teams like Howard and Jacksonville St., and just chucks up shit in all other games.
On a good note, we showed the fans are in to it and we hung with a B1G favorite that had extra motivation after being let off the hook for allowing child rape to occur for decades under their noses because the B1G needs a winner in a bowl this year :)

You know what pisses me off the most about this whole "let's lift the punishment on Penn State" thing is that this is just going to embolden the PSU Truthers in their truthiness.
Many PSU fans were assholes before, their lack of perspective and humility sure isn't going to improve given this new leniency.

Yup. First thing when that was announced was their message board fodder saying "The wins for Paterno are next."
I half expect them to find the old statue to put back up.

I've never been to the state of Pennsylvania. The only time I recall actively rooting for a Penn State win with any gusto was a game vs UGA during the Herschel Walker era (IIRC). My late father-in-law considered Paterno the single most unlikable coach in any sport he'd ever seen.
And I'm right alongside those PSU folks who believe he got one rawest unjustified railroadings in sports history.

Yes, he was totally railroaded for employing a pedophile, allowing rapes to occur in his locker room, and pretending not to know about it while waiting for those above him to move the process along. Oh, and collecting wins and records. We wouldn't want those wins and records to go away.

Dola, considering you want the death penalty for people who smoke a joint, your stance on this is fairly silly.

I question the credibility of the whistleblower (I mean ass't whathisname that escapes me at the moment). I do not believe Paterno to failed to meet reasonable standards for his responsibility.
I didn't particular like Paterno frankly but I believe he was victimized by a media frenzy. (I thought attacking Obama for his teleprompter issues was silly, and you know what I think of him. I don't have to like you to have a favorable opinion of you in a limited circumstance).
I am NOT saying or suggesting that what he suffered compares to what the victims of the apparent pedophile suffered. But the existence of those victims & the severity of the crimes against them does not affect the question of whether Paterno was victimized to a less severe extent.

I started with alleged but you lose "alleged" once convicted.
Do I believe every count he was convicted on?
Honestly, no.
(which is *not* the same as "believe NO count", that's not what I'm saying)
