Thanks to the participants. This was a very smooth draft. It moved really fast and had hardly any controversy. I also learned more in this draft than any other because several of the picks were fascinating and/or horrible scandals that I hadn't heard about before.

Voting Rules:
1) Vote for the top three participants. They will be scored 5 for 1st, 3 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd.
2) Participants may vote, but cannot vote for themselves.
3) Participants will be making a case for their own picks. You may want to wait to hear what they have to say, but it isn't a requirement.
4) Voting will end Sunday, September 28 at 1159pm EST.

My 3.4 pick should be Salem, not Sales.

Although I guess that would be a scandal, too.

This was pretty tough but I'll throw my vote up there before there is much defense as I followed along pretty closely. My vote is certainly impacted by whether or not these were scandals at the time, in retrospect or even whether they are scandals altogether.

1st DaddyTorgo- I think you did a great job of drafting some biggies (rounds 1-3) and your last couple rounds were very solid.

2nd- JPhillips- Very close to first for me as I think you have a strong variety, particularly with the steroid scandal in the 6th round, J.R.'s shooting in the 7th and The Jungle in the 9th. Well done, your second place comes from solid early drafting but strong late drafting.

3rd- Cartman- R & J was an inspired choice (even though I hate the play, I know, blasphemy from a literature teacher) as was the Mengele experiments, which never would've crossed my mind. Boss Tweed in the 10th was terrific as well.

I do have to say, you all did an awesome job though, one of the best drafts I've seen in terms of results and pace. It spurred a lot of discussion at my house (wife is a history teacher) and amongst my peers in the English office.

As I present my choices, I want to highlight a couple things. First is the question of what is a scandal. It's something we each had to think about, and now the voters will. I would argue that a scandal is different from a tragedy or a controversy. It could be both or either but a scandal has to be more. A scandal should be shocking, it should involve something being revealed or exposed, it should be something that people gawk at. To my mind the murder of a famous person is a tragedy, but not necessarily a scandal. A murder that is revealed to have been planned by a celebrity is a scandal.

I tried to pick in each category one of the most outrageous events in that arena, something that spawned a great deal of shock and gossip iat the time, and ideally something that has reverberated through history.

SPORTS: Muhammad Ali's refusal to be drafted, and his subsequent ban from boxing, was an unexpected, highly charged and shocking development. It had lasting social effect and greatly impacted the sport as well, resulting in one of the greatest sporting events of all time with his return.

POLITICS: The death of a king would be a tragedy, but the exposure of an outlandish plot to kill the king and destroy the Parliament, planned by secret Catholics in a virulently Protestant England was scandal. Secret priests, wild trials, multiple executions, and the subsequent crazed crack down on Catholics made this plot scandalous, and one that people still talk about hundreds of years later on each 5th of November.

VISUAL ARTS: Modern art still has the capability of shocking people, and that started with Cubism, which made its first splash on the art world in a calculated fashion in Paris. Designed to upset the audience, it did, and little else was discussed in the art world for years to come as Cubist painters undid everything that had been done in art.

MUSIC: I do not think there is a bigger scandal in the music world than the accusations of child molestation on Michael Jackson. From the biggest star in the world, to a bizarre recluse, Jackson's trials for child sexual abuse were the biggest story there was, and completely redefined a man and a career.

MILITARY: Abu Ghraib completely changed American and world opinion about our country and our military. Nothing could have been more shocking than the pictures of prisoner abuse that came out of this prison, and it directly led to the unfolding story of black prison sites, waterboarding and torture that reverberates to this day.

RELIGION: The hundred years of horribly corrupt and prurient rule by popes is a story that lasted for hundreds of years, directly feeding into a sense of corruption that led to the Protestant Revolution. There is nothing more shocking than the combination of deviant sexuality and the most holy position in the world.

FICTIONAL: Lady Chatterley's Lover was so shocking that it led politicians to hyperbole like this. "South Carolina's Coleman Livingston Blease argued in favor of censorship, saying he would be happy to "see the democratic and republican form of government forever destroyed if necessary to protect the virtue of the womanhood of America.""

WRITING: Oscar Wilde is basically synonymous with scandal, still known more for his shocking wit and personal life than his writing. His libel trial was the spectacle of its day, just as pored over in the newspaper as any modern scandal.

SEX: Speaking of people synonymous with scandal, how about an aristocrat whose name is now synonymous with deviant sex? Marquis de Sade is still shocking and scandalous, so imagine how shocking his life was at the time.

SCIENCE: The Kinsey report was a shocking bit of science, in part because of its claims that masturbation was normal (and endemic) and that women orgasmed, that sexuality was a spectrum where most people resided not at the poles. Add in the fact that the scientist was actually participating in the sex he was studying, in 1940s America, and you've got an extreme science scandal.

Each of these was, I believe, not simply controversial, but the topic of scandal at the time, and in most cases for a long time after. Many are the epitome of their type of scandal. In choosing i went for the strongest contender in each category, rather than a couple blockbuster, and some duds. Now, vote me!

both teams played hard ... ;)

Just a quick summary and wikipedia service for my own picks. I tried to find a mix between events garnering a big reaction at the time and events that had huge repercussions later on.

1.3 Sports/Recreation, 1980-1999, The Hand of God by Diego Maradona

Argentina v England (1986 FIFA World Cup) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentina_v_England_%281986_FIFA_World_Cup%29#.22Hand_of_God.22_goal)

only one of many scandals for one of the greatest soccer players in history (and maybe the best player in 1986), producing possibly the quintessential cheating moment in the sport. And later on in the game he went on to score one of the great goals in history. Genius and Madness were always close by with him.

2.6 Religion, pre-1600s, Martin Luther pins his 95 theses in 1517

The Ninety-Five Theses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ninety-Five_Theses)

I think part of the issue with scandals from way back is the different audience by which reaction one can judge it. Nowadays, everybody has a voice and raises it, back then it was entirely different. Which is why Lutherīs act was so unusual at the time and why, to me, it was most definitely a scandal. It shocked and appalled the higher-ups of society, whose reaction then all but ensured the great schism ending in the protestant reformation.

3.3 Science, 1800s, Bone Wars

Bone Wars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_Wars)

This to me was always the prototypical american science scandal. The setting of the first parts of it (the Wild West !), the overbording scale of the operation, the two bigger-than-life adversaries duking it out wherever they could. And in the end, both guys drew the short stick and the government won ;)

4.6 Writing, 1600s, Thomas Overbury

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Overbury

Two important aspects of William Shakespeare's time: Everybody was a writer and everybody was conspiring against each other. Both those were proven true in this story of an underdog climbing the ranks at court, overstepping his bounds and being brutally thrown of the ladder. All it took was a single poem. (for some poetic reaction at the time: The Overbury Murder Scandal (1615-1616) - Early Stuart Libels (http://www.earlystuartlibels.net/htdocs/overbury_murder_section/H0.html) Iīm telling you, just like the rap community of recent past)

5.3 Politics, 1700s, Execution of King Louis XVI of France on January 21st, 1793.

Execution of Louis XVI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_of_Louis_XVI)

similarly to Luther in that the scandal canīt be judged by some sort of reaction by the general public. Of course the french watched (but the men in charge still felt the need to mobilize pretty much every available soldier to keep the peace) and the French revolution ultimately proved the "right" course historically. But the world at large was appalled that a King was tried and executed like a common man.

6.6 Music, 2000+, Nipplegate

Not many times you had a scandal happen on live TV, much less in the event with the biggest number of viewers and involving 2 genuine "Stars". Also, Nipplegate !

Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXVIII_halftime_show_controversy)

7.3 Visual Arts, 1900-1919, The Birth of a Nation

Maybe not as much of a scandal then as it would have been 40 years later, but even at the time it garnered strong responses throughout the country. Even today, people are stuck between a rock and a hard place. As a film buff you almost can't help but be impressed by the film but on the other hand the racial issues of the films seem, if anything, even more apparent today.

8.6 Military, 1920-1939, Blomberg–Fritsch Affair

Blomberg–Fritsch Affair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blomberg%E2%80%93Fritsch_Affair)

To me this always stood out as one of those moments that had much bigger consequences than a slew of more dramatic moments that get discussed when looking at WW2. Maybe because it happened in court rooms and at conference tables and not on the field of battle.

9.3 Sex, 1940-1959, Ingrid Bergman / Roberto Rossellini

Ingrid Bergman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingrid_Bergman)

A great Hollywood Import (who always sort of refused to get molded into that industry with small things like keeping her name) fails to live up to the standards of 1950s America and gets essentially thrown out with much ballyhoo (only to be accepted back in the family with what many consider the makeup-call/academy award for the mediocre "Anastasia" in 1956)

10.6 Fictional, 1960-1979, The Vogons destroy Earth (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy)

Come on, you hopefully know all about that one :)

When it comes to pure scandal as opposed to controversy (a distinction that was brought up in the voting thread, I think Autumn and JPhillips were the two most consistently close to scandal as I define it, and each had brilliant picks (In fact, I think MdS may have been my favorite selection in the entire draft).

The difference between the two ultimately lies in impact of scandal, and I felt like JPhillips' scandals overall had greater impact and legacy than Autumn's.

Although I would call evolution more of a controversy as opposed to a scandal, the rest of DT's draft was good enough that he slides into third place for me.

Quite a few others were close, but had at least one selection that put them behind in what was a really tight race.

I will make my case for the lower half of britrock's draft that I came in relief for. I'll let him explain the top 3 as they are quite good.

[B]5.6 Military, 1800s, The Sinking of the Maine

The Sinking of the Maine in Havana harbor set off a firestorm of scandalous behavior by the US media. The sinking itself was hotly debated, but the "yellow journalism" stories by highly regarded publishers Pulitzer and Hearst helped turn public opinion against Spain and toward war. Within months of the sinking, the Spanish-American War began.

6.3 Sex, 1700s, Catherine the Great
Catherine usurped her own husband, and then proceeded to have a long string of lovers with whom she bestowed titles and positions. Affairs may have been fairly common place in aristocracy, but she took it to new levels. Her sexual appetite is legendary, so legendary that stories about her and horse persist to this day.

7.6 Fictional, 1940-1959, Lolita
It may be a literary classic, but Lolita came out to a wave a criticism from everything to trash to pornography. It's subject matter is still controversial today. Even today, the term "Lolita" has a sexual connotation.

8.3 Sports, 1980-1999, Nancy Kerrigan Attack
Why this over OJ? Had Kerrigan simply been attacked, it's simply tragic. But Kerrigan was attacked by the husband and bodyguard of a close competitor. Tonya Harding was allowed to compete in the Olympics. Her short program remains the 6th most watched event in TV history, but she was essentially ostracized by the event. Now she lives on as a D list celeb on TruTV.

9.6 Writing, 1600s, The writing of John Locke
Not scandalous? Ask the aristocracy of the 17th century. Locke's progressive ideas on the rights of people helped led to events such as the American Revolution. His beliefs went directly against the prevailing powers of the time.

10.3 Music, 2000-Present, Dixie Chicks Anti-War/Bush Controversy
In the grand scheme of things, it may not seem like a large scandal, but Maines comments against the war and President Bush came at a time when American patriotism and support of the war ran high. The Dixie Chicks were high on the charts too, but within 2 weeks of the comments their song "Landslide" went from #10 to off the charts completely. The comments and scandal afterwards wrecked their career, and they haven't been the same sense.

This was a lot of fun. Thanks again to Colt for stepping in and filling out our team.

Let me explain my four picks by starting with the central question: what makes a scandal a scandal? Many of the draft's selections fall into a fairly narrow range, wherein someone famous or important is revealed in a way that compromises perceptions of their personal character. I certainly agree that those incidents are scandals.

I am also, however, one of the people that defines a scandal much more broadly. I would sum up my understanding of it as 1) a public act or act later revealed to the public; 2) that goes against prevailing standards of legality, morality, decency, or taste; 3) and causes public outrage.

I understand that there is overlap between that definition and controversy. But what is a controversy if not a debate about a scandalous thing? I don't think someone has to get caught with their pants down, either. Public shame directed at an individual is part of what makes a scandal compelling, but it's not a requirement, if you ask me.

All that said, my four picks.

1. Jesus' crucifixion
I had to try this. No single event has precipitated more consequential events in the Western Hemisphere. Debate your perception of the man, debate the connection of events like the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the Conquest of the Americas to this, but know that this was the touchstone for so much of the history--good and bad--that has followed it.

2. JFK's assassination
How many historical events have occurred where the majority opinion believes that a conspiracy is afoot? The Warren Commission and countless others have been working at this event, the underlying circumstances, and the potential motivations for it for half a century. This event implicates so many people. It is tragedy, controversy, and scandal all wrapped into one.

3. The Scopes Trial
Darwin's On the Origin of Species (also picked) was the impetus for the 150-year-old debate on evolution that has followed. This event capitalized on the fervor of the debate. A small Tennessee town pursues a staged and publicized trial featuring two preeminent litigators in William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow. The trial and conviction solidify a cause celebre, vaunt the reputations of the attorneys, and contribute precious little to the question at hand.

4. Fountain
Following closely on the heels of the Cubists (another pick I loved), who set aside the purely representational to explore the conceptual aspects of art, Marcel Duchamp took things a bit further. His submission of the rotated urinal and its rejection from the 1917 Society of Independent Artists exhibition brought to the fore questions that are central to understanding visual art today. Is art a craft? Is art an act of intellectual interpretation? Must one create a work of art, or can one select or conceive it? Art was forever changed.

I didn't think Jesus or JFK were really scandals, but it was interesting how deep this draft was, there was stuff in the last rounds that could have just as easily been in the first.

I figured Watergate was a lock for the top pick, but expected OJ to be right up there. Turned out there were so many sporting scandals from the last two time periods though, it was hardly worth using a top pick on one.

I won't vote, but I would like to defend my picks. First, I think of all the draftees, my picks were indeed scandals in the truest sense of the word. If you google any of my picks, the word "scandal" will be prominently involved.

1.5 Politics, 1980-1999, Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky Scandal - I don't think I really need much explanation on this one. The second biggest presidential scandal of our lifetimes behind Watergate.

2.4 Military, 1800's, The Dreyfus Affair - I don't think this pick is getting the credit it deserves, probably because it is French. It divided France in half, and was probably the first case where public opinion and media got a very political ruling overturned. Heck, even Wikipedia has 10 subsets from this event. It's an unbelievable story, and one that everyone should know.

3.5 Music, 1960-1979, Alan Freed/Dick Clark Congressional Hearings (Payola Scandal) - This got the most famous DJ in America (and the man who coined the phrase "rock and roll") fired, and he died just a couple of years after. It also changed the way the music industry and radio interacted.

4.4 Fictional, 1600s, The Scarlet Letter - The classic story about adultery, which was the most scandalous thing of those days.

5.5 Science, 1900-1919, The Piltdown Man - One of the greatest hoaxes ever committed. It fooled most of the paleoantologists for over 40 years before the truth was revealed.

6.4 Writing, 2000-present, A Million Little Pieces - A true scandal. How often does a #1 bestselling memoir endorsed by Oprah turn out to be fake?

7.5 Sports, 1940-1959, CCNY point shaving scandal - Another pick that I feel isn't getting enough love. New York was the king of basketball until this scandal hit.

8.4 Sex, 1700's, Alexander Hamilton sex scandal - I would argue that this scandal was even bigger than Clinton/Lewinsky. At least Clinton's rivals didn't shoot him after it was done.

9.5 Visual Arts, 1920-1939, Death of Olive Thomas - This was probably the first of the Hollywood scandals. Imagine if Kim Basinger (movie star) was found dead, and Alec Baldwin (movie star from famous movie family) was suspected of murdering her to collect the insurance money. That was what this was like.

10.4 Religion, Pre-1600's, The East-West Schism - The only pick on my list that wasn't a scandal in the truest sense of the word. However, the bitterness and theological disputes, and the controversial excommunication of many Cardinals resulted into the formation of the Catholic Church.

All in all, this was a lot of fun to do, and I learned about a lot of things I wouldn't have known otherwise. I think everyone did very well. Thanks again larrymcg421 for coming up with a great idea.

I felt these three lists had the most real "scandals" on them, and then comparing them amongst each other, Cartman won the most categories, with the other two coming very close together.

1. JPhillips
2. DT
3. Cartman

Top two are close, but I think JPhillips got some steals late that gave him a deeper draft.

1) JPhillips - I still can't believe McCarthy fell to the fourth round. Only a couple of people came even close to the fictional JR selection.

2) DT - The top three were massive

3) Bitrock - I could have went with three or four guys here. I think everyone drafted well. I think there was separation of the top two.

Nobody took the rape of Africa for slave labor or the Civil Fucking War?

Civil War isn't a scandal. Now the caning of charles sumner on the senate floor might have been a good one...yeah.

Yeah, I think deciding what is a scandal was the major factor. There's lots of shocking events, but i would never consider the Civil War a scandal. I wouldn't even consider the McCarthy hearings a scandal. Maybe a scandal arose out of it, but in general things like that are controversies, not scandals in my mind.
