Retired Numbers

I had a RB for 11 seasons. Along the way he set single season marks in everything before eventually becoming the all-time leader in every statistical category. He wore 44 for the 11 years with us.

In that final season with us he suffered a gruesome injury, and I did not resign him. I figured he would retire anyway.

Alas he did not, and he ended his final season playing 5 games for San Jose. 5 games, he had 18 carries.

I suppose he wore #30 with San Jose, because 5 years later when he retired as a member of my team, we retired his number 30.

Uhm. Ok.

It's a little thing, and I don't really care that much, but it's interesting to note.

One of the things that I've always wanted to piece together for FOFL is something like what PFR does with the player number swatches. I'm sort of getting there, but that's a matter of luck more than anything; when I set up my database for storing cur/future ratings over time, I left in some extra Extractor information - popularity, loyalty, jersey number. It's not perfect in that typically I was grabbing that info in TC1/TC2 and a player might get cut or traded and have a new number, but it was something.

Rather than importing the new .csv with ratings as-is, I'm manually grabbing the jersey number from the player_record.csv and storing it in my old table. I don't think it is in the player_information.csv table (which contains records for retired players). What I would have ideally wanted is for jersey no. to be a field in player_season_xxxx.csv. That way we'd have them team-by-team, year-by-year, game-by-game. I'm not sure if anyone besides me would use that, though.

My guess is that upon retirement, a player is analyzed and that data is ferreted away to be revealed in five years. And it probably grabs the player number at the time of retirement*. It would be interesting to see if a Ring of Honor quality player would ever be assigned the number 0, if he retired while a FA.


* actually, I'm guessing it is either a copy or an extension of the HoF logic, just with a lower threshold points-wise. Player gets above a certain bar and they are in, for whatever team the game determines is "their" team, just as it does for their HoF affiliation. So you will probably never see a vet who spent 8 years with one team and 7 with another honored by both teams. At least that's my guess.

Yeah, pretty much every guy that makes the Hall should have his # retired in game IMO

Unless they play for the Chicago Bears, then they have to wait around 30 years to have their number retired.
