I find it odd that they're trying to bring their major platform more in line with the mobile site.

I keep hoping this redesign will end on April 2nd.

Really? Doesn't most data show that traffic is moving in droves to mobile devices? I'm not surprised by these mobile device friendly redesigns anymore.

Already talked about liking it in the Random thread, but this is just beautiful for a variety of reasons:

It looks more like an RSS reader, similar to how Netvibes (yeah, still use that) has links on the left and the content on the right for a site. Of course that's more of a frame-based setup, this doesn't look to be. I dunno, I think the old site was a bit of a mess as it was (though no, I don't go there very often either way).

All the sports websites look pretty much the same to me. Though I'm generally looking for headlines and sometimes scores/standings.

It does. But I must be in the minority that hates the way the majority of sites look in their mobile form.

I actually really like it. It's quick and the drop downs make it far easier to navigate, IMO. The info is also set up in a easy to find way.

Don't get me wrong, I hate it too.
I've used ESPN this year a lot more than in the past due to fantasy basketball, but it doesn't seem too bad. The redesigned Sports Illustrated, on the other hand, is the most frustrating website experience I've had since the days of dial-up.

Generally speaking, I don't know if it's good or bad, but it's still a massive improvement over the previous tragedy.

It's completely unusable without javascript. So I deleted my bookmark.

I liked the old mobile site. But they carried over the horrible player cards. So now it's like the worst of all worlds. I pretty much never visit from the computer.

I go to great lengths to ensure that nothing's flashing or moving on the screen when I'm trying to read something.
The kids today... when I was their age, we read an entire story right to the bitter end. These kids... can't keep their attention past the first paragraph unless you invoke a Kardashian.

It's pretty amazing that ESPN's current design was about five years old, although the current design was really a tweak of the previous design that predated the rise of their blogs, social media and other content creations.
The old site was out of date, but it was ... for lack of a better word, substantial.
This design looks like a WordPress template you can download and setup in an afternoon. I actually like a couple of things it does -- man, your favorite teams are in your face now when you're logged in. But some pretty big things are hidden away. Noteworthy that they haven't touched fantasy sports yet -- the only thing that has changed is the man ESPN.com menu navigation.
But news is almost entirely gone. You have a couple of headlines, but the rest of the page is nothing but blogs and social media. It's like Pinterest threw up on ESPN.com. It's a news site, not a social media site. I think they are missing their audience. It's not about designing for the device, it's about content you want.

People go to ESPN.com for news headlines?
People go to ESPN.com for news headlines?
I'm sure that even stuff like Fox and CNN are, like ESPN, more social-media sites geared toward mouth-breathing commenters than actual news sites.

CNN does have tons of headlines - though are in the "Breaking News" sort of way that its TV channel works.
People don't get their news from these sites to begin with. They get it from Facebook or Twitter. If anything, people may link to news stories on ESPN or CNN through their respective social media feeds.

as a web developer, i can't imagine building a website with no javascript and i feel bad for anyone trying to access sites i've built with their javascript disabled.

JS is used for a hell of a lot more than flashing and moving things on screen.

Right, and none of this is new or exclusive to ESPN. One fanatic who clicks through and comments on every single article tangentially related to Kobe/vaccines/Benghazi makes up for a bunch of people who don't see anything particularly newsworthy.

It's not like I don't already waste far too much time on the Internet.
I just want the basics on a news site: scores, standings, schedules, rosters. I don't want someone guessing what I want to see. If you feel the need to entertain me while I'm there, you're probably just being annoying.

Sounds like a mobile app to me ;). In fact, that's exactly what theScore app does.

Is it just my laptop and maybe the DPI or something, or are the scores at the top cut in half..

Thanks for pointing it out. I went there and found a 30 on 30 about the Curious Case of Sidd Finch. I remember that story well.
The old site always froze for me. Hopefully, this one wont.
