But I made it out OK.

Kind of surreal having only the clothes on your back right now. But I'll be OK, staying with my parents now.

Wow. Glad you are okay. My sister-in-law's house burned down a few years ago, and it is devastating.

lungs
04-02-2015, 07:34 AM
Thanks everybody. Not sure what happened yet, it started in my attached garage. The winds were blowing pretty fierce last night so it quickly spread to the rest of the house. Fire department response was about as quick as could be but it was too late by the time they got there. My cat did not get out alive, which is sad, but she was also 12 years old and in bad health.

Insurance should cover quite a bit of stuff. Again, thanks everybody.

Having had a house fire in High School I can empathize. I am so sorry for your loss. I wish you the best of luck in the days and weeks to come. It remains difficult for a while even after you leave temporary housing. I hope your insurance company is good to work with as that can make such a difference in these scenarios.

Holy cow, lungs! Really glad you got out alive. Sorry about your cat. :(

Is your house on the property of your dairy farm? And if so, was there any damage there (to the business interests)? I actually don't know if you live on the farm property or have your own place (feels like I should know).

Hang in there, man. As has been said, I am sure a lot of us here can help out if insurance doesn't get it all back for you.

Thomkal

Can't even begin to understand how you are feeling right now-so glad you have your parents there to offer support for you (and a place to live). Having a cat myself, I'm especially sorry to hear your cat did not make it out. Sick or not you had her for 12 years, and you certainly did not expect to lose her this way. :(

I hope insurance will take care of the house and its contents-did you lose your car/trucks too? I urge you to seek professional help to take care of yourself as well. You will be in my thoughts.

Did you guys smell smoke, see the fire, or did smoke detectors alarm you to the fire? Did it happen when everyone was awake?

lungs
04-02-2015, 11:21 AM
Again, thanks to all the support. It means a lot.

The house was not on the actual farm property, just down the road. The cows are all safe and sound and my livelihood is intact. Honestly, better my house than any barn on my farm, as weird as that may sound.

We are pretty well insured, so while I do appreciate the offers of a fund, if you feel you need to do something, donate money to your favorite charity as there people in this world worse off than I am right now. Stuff can be replaced.

Again, much appreciated all around.

dola

I had just changed the batteries on my smoke detector one month ago. Check yours please. I was asleep and the smoke detector woke me up. It started in my garage and I was on the opposite side of the house. If I would have slept an extra 20 minutes, things might not be so good right now. But that's what smoke detectors are for.

I'm keeping myself upbeat. My dad and I were just over at the rubble and planning out how we are going to situate the new house. My insurance company has been great so far. I've got a great support system in place and I'm excited for what the future holds.

Tonight I will be cheering on my Wisconsin Badgers and not worrying about anything else! Again, thanks everybody for the well wishes.

Starting point for the fire was the garage. This house was built in the 1940s. Who knows how shoddy the wiring job was. We probably will never know for sure.

Put money down on a new house yesterday. Should be built and ready by the end of the summer. Insurance company has been good, they cut a check for the new house a little while back, just need to finalize my possessions list. With what they've valued so far, they've been very fair ($15 a piece for all my hundreds of CDs that were sitting in my attic that I've already transferred to MP3???).

So things are looking up. Again thanks everybody for the good thoughts, it's helped out a bunch in this whole process.

Can't blame the cows, they were about a half mile down the road from my house :)

Glad it's working out. Please post pix during construction if you can.

The house is actually going to be built in a factory and shipped to the site.

I really should post pictures of the destruction around the house right now. There was a big red barn, a small red shed, and an old red hog house/chicken coop on the property (none of which were used in many, many years). We had a guy come in and pay us to reclaim the timber from all that so he can sell it to hipsters for their bars. It's quite the sight of destruction at the moment.
