View Full Version : The two-way star (OOTP16/FBCB/FBPB)

We'll see how long this lasts but..
I'm currently fascinated by the idea of doing a dynasty with a two-sport star. So I'm going to use OOTP16 and the FBCB/FBPB games to help me do this.
The storyline is basically, we have a guy who is an elite athlete in high school who loves both baseball and basketball. He wants to play both in college, most programs aren't super pumped about this idea. Instead, he decides to go pro in baseball and to just play the college level in basketball in the meantime.
I'm going to create a cross-town rivalry of high schools who supply my elite talents in both the FBCB league and OOTP. Our first guy we'll follow is going to come from here.
I'm going to be touch and go about how I do this, but the idea is really just to follow our guy's performance in both games alternating seasons and see if he can hack it as a pro in both sports. Eventually, we'll have someone else follow him and see if they can do it too.
Eventually, we might get a star.

Here's the baseball version of our guy. The basketball recruit came in at 5-stars. It's probably higher than I initially wanted to make him, but he has to be good enough to get through the churn especially in the college basketball game, but lots of kids who are high potential don't pan out in basketball.
Baseball, he's got less of a future than he has in basketball.

Here's his HS measurables. A bit too good, future guys won't be this good that was a miscalculation on my part. But it'll be interesting to see how it works out, plus his potential is a lot better than his actuals so he might not pan out.

So Bryson somehow didn't get drafted out of high school, dunno if his age or that I created him directly from the computer was the reason but either way, he wasn't. So we'll leave him in free agent pool, it's June and we'll see if he manages to get signed by someone as a minor league free agent.
At this point, he's still a much better basketball player just on his recruit status. In baseball it'll be a while before we'll be able to tell if he has any real major league potential.

The Maryland team he's joining lost in the Final Four this past season, so...they're already good. No idea who they lost, but give he's the #1 recruit in the country in basketball it might not matter. I have the 1 and done rule turned on, so he might leave after a year and already be in the NBA before he has any shot at playing baseball at the major league level, but with how little the seasons overlap, it's at least somewhat doable. (Unless he's on a playoff team obviously..in which case we'd just put his player on the DL for those periods of time in baseball to make it more realistic.)

Maryland went 29-5 into the tournament and were upset by St. Bonaventure the 16th seed in their region.
Omar declared for the NBA draft and is the #1 prospect, so will likely be a Top 5 pick?

It might have something to do with the fact that the source college file is on a different era than the one I imported him into, so it made him retroactively younger. I just edited him to make him now 20 after his rookie NBA season.

Sidenote, I like that I can get text player cards from the FBCB/PB games so easy. Cutting screenshots is such a PITA when you just wanna display a little data and I wish Markus/OOTP realized this but they don't.

I'll fix his birthday so it's at least the same in both games (the date) tho not the year obviously since we're in two different timelines but ignore that for these purposes.

He's making progress in baseball too. Here's how his 2nd season went. He got promoted to Double-A, my league currently only has two levels of minors (I might add a third but it makes things sim slower.)

I reset his birthday to November 6th in both games not that it matters, but that way, his age is aligned even if the years aren't.

So now that he's an NBA star or whatever, I just edit him to be suspended for 70-80 games of the baseball season, with the idea being that he can't really start until after the NBA playoffs end. We'll see how that affects his baseball development.

I orchestrated a trade for him to go play for the New York Mets, in part because this way he could manage to work for both teams and it'd be easier if he manages to stay with the Knicks. Plus he's popular in the city, so it seemed like a smart move for them to make. Cincinnati got an outfield prospect from the Mets who was their 1st rounder two years ago and is major league ready right now.
It's a risk for the Mets to get a guy who might not ever 1) pan out and 2) who isn't ready yet, but it could pay dividends.

Does anyone want to speculate as to his NBA comparison player in real life? He's never won an MVP so he's not LeBron or even Jordan. But I can't quite put a finger on who he might project as. Anyone have any ideas?

Closest comparison I can think of off the top of my head is maybe Bernard King with a 3 point shot? Not a perfect comparison obviously, but first one that came to mind based on his current stats and ceiling. (Knicks thing might be unconsciously pushing me there too).

Vince Carter. I just went and looked at one of those lists. He's a better Vince Carter. High ceiling, young talent that electrified people and in this case, took a team to two titles already but wasn't the MVP but clearly a star in the league.
We'll see how his career pans out but...Vince.

Here's how the baseball career is going so far. He's a two-sport guy at least and that's saying something because not many can say that part.
The part-time thing seems to have really hurt his development as he's effectively missed two years of development at a time when he could've been a lot better than he looks like he'll be now.
But given how well the NBA is working out for him, maybe that doesn't matter.
Can you imagine, for a second, how annoyed an NBA team would be though having their star forward out there taking grounders and potentially getting hurt in the off-season? Haha...this would not go well.

In the hopes of trying to salvage his baseball career, we're going to have the Mets release him. He's going to go play in the independent league in my game, the ABA and go play for the New York Gothams. The idea is that if he can go down there, hit well and perform, that he'll be better suited for a major league job.
I just think another year of hitting under .250 in the majors is going to torpedo whatever is left of his career because he's missed so much development time and since there is no AAA in my league, he's kind of always either play way above his head or way below it and there's no middle ground, but I'm going to posit that the ABA is gonna give him that and so we'll see if it works or not.

At this point in his NBA career, after leading the Knicks to their 3rd straight NBA title, winning Finals MVP and making another all-star team and 1st team all-NBA, dude is the King of New York. No matter what he does the rest of his career, he's never gonna buy a drink in the city again and they'll be talking about him forever.
This baseball stuff is a lovely footnote, but hell, most owners would let him play in their outfield with his Q rating where it is now. They're saying things like "for a guy with his work ethic and talent level, anything is possible. He's not a diva out there."
And he's saying, "baseball failure helps me in basketball. And it's a lot more interesting than just being in the gym. It keeps me fit, keeps me on a team. It's not for everyone, but I'm blessed to be able to do it."
Him being in the ABA, is a fun storyline too. Taking buses. He did the Jordan thing but instead of buying a team bus, he just rents a charter for the Gothams to fly places for the year because "it's better for everyone and the guys love it."
The Knicks privately still hate that he does it, but...they're figuring he's young and that he'll get it out of his system sooner or later. And so long as he keeps winning titles, they're not going to protest too much.

Turns out, the Gothams stint did him some good. He's found his swing and posted a solid batting average and made the CL all-star game though surely that has something to do with his high popularity score.

Meaning our guy will end up in the post-season of both sports in the same year. It'll also delay his appearance at training camp with the Knicks, something they aren't happy about but that his contract doesn't prohibit.

Love to see that avgerage keeping on the upwards trend. Looking to see if he can potentially be an all star for both leagues. Doesn't look like it, but if some of those stats keep going upwards, you never know what might happen eh?

Yeah, for a minute there I thought he wasn't gonna get another major league job and then I'd have just had him retire and find someone else to take his spot.
Deion Sanders played 9 years in the bigs and missed three seasons because of football. I think we'll see.
In his 7th NBA season, Omar and the Knicks lost in the 1st round of the playoffs. They didn't win 3 straight titles, but 2 titles in 3 years (losing in the Conference finals in the other year)

He was an all-star again in the NBA, made all-defensive 2nd team and all-NBA 1st team. And his stats keep improving, which makes you wonder. He has two more years left on this deal and then a player option for $20.5 million after that. It's just too much money for him to give up to play baseball for a full year, but I'd be intrigued to see him do it.

Omar is a baseball free agent, so he's free to sign with any team but unofficially is looking to sign with a New York team as it makes it easier for him not to miss as much time on the field. So that leaves the New York A's, Brookyln Dodgers or the Mets where he's already played before.
The Mets aren't interested, at least officially. The A's have been interested for a while but he's resisted a move to The Bronx to play for the team that replaced the Yankees when they moved to Tampa nearly a decade ago.
He signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers on a 3-year deal worth just over a $1 million bucks.
We'll see how his next three years go with the Dodgers and whether or not he's able to continue the improvement we've seen over the past few years as he heads into the prime of his career.

I think he's going to retire from baseball though and focus on basketball, as since he's going to be a free agent in basketball next year, no team will allow him to keep doing both because he's costing them too much money.
So for now, he's going to retire from baseball. We'll still follow his basketball career until the end, though.

He's heading for his option year in basketball, Knicks missed the post-season and I'd like to see how he does on the open market.
Was All-Star game MVP, won Slam Dunk contest and yeah..he's like high ceiling Vince Carter in the NBA, surely one of the top 10 players in the league and still soaring.

Two MVP awards for Bryson, solidifies his status as one of the best of his generation. Probably a good decision to put baseball down for now. There are always whispers he might return to the diamond at some point, but..those considerations seem unlike at this point in his career with his age.
