There's been a noticeable drop in posting activity very recently. Just spit balling some possible reasons. What do you think?

Ive been on FOFC for 15 years with less than 2k posts.
For obvious reasons, I blame the ice weasels.

The dress is blue, and anyone who suggests otherwise is blind and/or wrong. What's that about posts now?

There was a jump in posts per month in the run-up to FOF7's release, and then a drop back to basically where things were before that. There has actually been a bit of an upswing in the last couple of months.

Yeah...I guess that's my first thought. Sure, we have a lot more new users and the FOF7 forum has more activity than in a long time, but I don't think it's enough to explain all of the uptick.

I think it's a case of Off Topic being far less active than it used to be, but we're seeing an uptick in other sections, particularly the Dynasty forum, which seems to have had a major spike the last couple months.

I voted the Trout option because I post here as often as I ever did (or I feel I do).
I am surprised to see that people base their posting on if others are posting. I don't really care what the rest of you punks do!

I voted for the I'm 40 option since ironically I turn 40 in 2 weeks. Honestly though, its not that I have less time for posting (I work from home and am pretty much on the forum all day here), I think I just have less interests on here than I did 10+ years ago.
I don't play as many video games any more, I seem to watch less sports than I used to. I never really enjoyed getting into the debates on here where everyone already have their minds made up anyways..
I guess the main interests that I share with others on this forum these days are either movies or health/fitness and most of that seems contained in a very few threads.
I really probably still come here every day because many of the people on this forum feel like an extended family to me. People I played online sports leagues with 15 years ago, or we have seen each other's families grow up.
So just like when visiting a brother-in-law, I'll listen to your conversations about things that I don't care about just because you're family.

As I visit this site from my laptop at home for the first time in months (because I have my laptop out to transfer a bunch of pics/videos off my phone), I realize another reason why I post here less...I browse the internet from my phone almost exclusively during non-work hours (the remaining 5% is on an iPad and I don't think I have FOFC bookmarked there). And unless something has changed recently, not having a mobile version of this site makes it a pain to view on a phone. I know people have used Tapatalk, but I've heard of problems with that app. I very rarely visit here on the weekends either, because again, I'm not at work and therefore not in front of a laptop.

When this all started I thought I had found my Eden. Laughter, comradeship, sports, friendships. Then it slowly started to turn. Some of you disappeared like fireflies at dawn, others slowly faded from memory like Pumpkins on the side of the road in November. The foul stench a hideous reminder of what once was, not that long ago. Something beautiful turned gross and rotting, just waiting to be disposed of, meanwhile left there as a cruel reminder of yesterdays reverie. Now I just wake up every morning, happy for the briefest moment before the soul crushing reality of what is sets in. I get up and try to act like a normal person, post. But as the hours click by I'm resigned to this fate, and so instead I whither into tomorrow, never hopeful, but only trying to hope nobody sees through the contempt as I wear this fake smile like armor so nobody burdens me with a question like "what's wrong"? When the answer is everything. Everything's wrong.

Fewer posts = fewer prompts to post.
That's kinda how I interpreted the "I don't post unless others post" thing. I don't think it's anybody being bashful, just that there's less reason to post.

We've looked at both post count & new users, but what about "new threads" (or even "active threads") per day?
That feels like an area that cuts back on my posting, ties to the option about megathreads in a way I guess. Whatever the post count total is, it definitely feels like there are considerably fewer new threads or even threads that have been active in a day/week, especially in the past 3-6 months.

I really only visit the OT forum, and activity has really gone down as of late. Not sure why really, but if there's any uptick in numbers I'm sure it has to do with reasons outside OT.

Didn't see this option in the poll so just went with trout instead.
On a marginally more serious note, I'd be even less inclined to post here if there were a few dozen threads ("Official 2015 NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 1 thread") with 3-4 posts each and very fragmented discussions knocking stuff off the front page rather than a megathread.

I think one of the things that happened is simple:
The people on this board have tended to be extremely similar from a demographical perspective. They have tended towards certain genders, ages, etc.
That demographic, as it has aged, has gotten married. Had kids. Gotten promotions at work. Changed jobs. And as a result, they have had less time for posting and reading stuff on a Internet forum.
Meanwhile, modern tech has followed them, so they can post away on Facebook or Twitter and group texts, snapchats, and so forth. All of these are easily accessed and used on mobile device,s and thus if you got any major friends from your FOFC Experience, then you can add them in to your Facebook and keep on.
And the people who lack time have slowly ebbed away.
Perfect example:
Go to the Members List, and sort everyone by posts.
I have the 12th most posts of anyone on the board!
How does that happen? I was never more than like 30th for a long time. But others have slowed down with real life hitting them, and I'm never getting married or having kids. And I've invested wayyy too much of my time into FOFC to slow down now! So I am now the 12th highest poster in FOFC history, which is just odd.

It's not the only factor, but it's a big one. The board was going to decline anyway, but the mods insistence on creating hostility served no positive purpose, and has driven off many posters. At this stage of the board's existence (and over the last few years), we didn't need mods to protect us from each other, we need mods that support and promote and encourage posters and posting, not pick fights with people and inconsistently take random sides and put grown-ups in time out.

I don't think you can argue the board is better without say, DaddyTorgo, Ksryup, Blacklader, and Crimson Fox collectively. You could throw in more controversial names that weren't everybody's cup of tea, but I personally liked when the board had more diversity and more weirdos running around. Now, only the most boring survive (myself included).

Somewhat oddly, I figure there is some truth in the o.p.
On the one hand, it's becoming uncommonly rare for me to bother with sticking anybody on ignore. And the urge to kill is considerably less frequent, so that's a plus I suppose.
On the other hand, even the minor occasional stress of trying to parse out "oh dear, what bit of honesty might set some mod off today" simply reached the point to where it's not really worth it to me to post that much any more.

DT is not banned (I don't think, I am not a mod so I am not 100% sure, but I have heard that he made the choice not to return). Before the super bowl DT called someone a douchebag who made a comment about the patriots cheating. That person responded calling DT an asshat. Both were suspended for 2 weeks. DT apparently decided not to return.
The funny thing is, reading the thread, at the time, everyone seemed to think it was funny. There were calls to "let him out for the super bowl thread to entertain us", but I dont' see a single post calling it an unfair ban, to the best of my knowledge there wasn't a single thread started about it.

I checked the Ben one to be funny. But the reality is...real life. This place will always mean a lot and it's not so much a place you "stop going" as much as you visit less. But much like the fishing buddy you only see when you go fishing and never hang out with otherwise, this place has that kind of resonance. And life would be a lot less interesting without the collection of characters we've amassed. But hey, everything doesn't last forever. It's been a solid run and I don't think all of the juice is squeezed from this one yet.
Also, I think without the Operation Sports lifeline, things wouldn't have lasted as long as they have.

There are some things that bother me, like the sexy, but tasteful pic thing. If it is not what is considered porn, it shouldn't be an issue.
I think some posters get more leeway than others based on history, but that is to be expected if there are those that poke the bear a lot.
As a whole, I think there is still more leeway here than a lot of sites I go to for people to get a bit more aggressive towards each other in threads.
End of the day though, it's a message board and really nothing anyone posts here should have a profound affect in the life of others they don't interact with regularly on a personal level, when it comes to debating certain topics.
People will always disagree and that should be allowed as it stimulates great discussion as long as certain lines aren't crossed. Personally I am MUCH more likely now to just avoid a thread that conjures up negative feelings/anger in me. I would assume others feel that way more and more and that can be a reason posts are declining.
That and the lack of TCY 2 :)

It had nothing to do with the Patriots, DT and Blacklader were boxed along with JIMGA for getting into an argument in a political thread. DT said on reddit he probably wasn't going to bother coming back, Blacklader made one more post implying he was leaving, and JIMGA came back after the two weeks. It looks like those posts have now been deleted for some reason. There were definitely talk about the boxings being unfair, and later there were jokes about how the FOFC was being penalized for not being able to experience DT in the run-up the super-bowl, which just happened to be around that same time.
So ya, they weren't permanently banned, but modding decisions did ultimately result is those posters not being here anymore. And other modding decisions resulted in driving other posters away. Again, for what gain? How did we benefit from the boxings? That's what always bewilders me. Are there 40-year old men here who had their feelings hurt so badly that they needed the mods to protect them and make them feel better for 2 weeks? The mod actions were pointless, created hostility, and ultimately made the board worse, all for absolutely zero gain, aside from whatever weird personal satisfaction the mods get from doing stuff like. And let's remember, Ben is on record expressing his general disdain for the OT board. He expresses that by blowing things up every so often and randomly boxing people whose posts aren't really any huge deviation from the norm.

Eh, a couple of posters being babies about it and flouncing out is what made them not around anymore. Ben hurt their fee fees. Ain't care. Every time someone goes to SportsDigs or reddit or skydoglicksmyass.com all bent out of shape because oh no, oppressive rules I roll my eyes. I mean, grow up and gain a little perspective.
IMO, there's a large board contingent that just isn't entertained by the idiocy of others anymore. So there's no need to engage.
But also what folks like YD say. There are so many more outlets out there, other means for interaction. A lot of people have found groups that better suit them at this stage of their lives and given their current interests (of which FOF is typically not one). Oh yeah, and families/kids and all that jazz.

Again my impression of all of this, I'm not a mod and surely don't speak for anyone else but me.
Ad hominem attacks are against the rules and always risk a suspension. Posters know this is the case, so why are some incapable of avoiding this on a repeated basis?
And I would once again point out that almost every time someone gets suspended around here someone starts a thread about the mods or says something. What appears to have happened in this thread in my eyes:
1) DT and NobodyHere got two weeks in January.
2) No one had a problem with it.
3) DT decides not to return to the board
4) Now, well after the fact, even though no one had a problem with it at the time, people have a problem with it.

Honestly, this is, to me, the defining characteristic of who DaddyTorgo is as a person, because we've seen this side of him so damn often. I don't know how many times he has been suspsended, but over the last 10 years or so, I am assuming he has been suspended more than anyone else on the board. But he's still allowed back. He's just asked to take a break when he gets like this. Why are we not ok with these being the rules on the board?
I think you're asking the wrong question, to be 100% honest in DT's case. Not "why do you need Ben to protect you from DT and others?", but rather, "why are we so upset at the expectation that adults behave like civil adults towards one another".
And again, I'm sticking by my ... confusion isn't the right word, but I''m going to keep hammering at the point that people have gone crazy on this board over suspensions countless times, no one is afraid of doing so here. No one thought to do so this last time he got suspened, because there was absolutely nothing special at all about it.

To put this on the mods ignores the fact that this place has an inordinate amount of regular old posters who are corrective, confrontational doofuses as well. On the one hand while it may seem that anybody interesting, wacky, and hard-to-control was forced out in the interest of peace and harmony, but it seems worth pointing out that the only kind of communication that's actively encouraged here anymore (outside of video games) is contentious bickering over sports or politics. Conflict seems to be encouraged under the surface, while on the surface folks are seemingly randomly punished for toeing lines that have never been clearly defined. I don't think it's a concerted conspiracy, so much as like minded mods and posters combined to reject anything other than what fit their narrow view of what this place should be.
An incident that has long stuck in my craw: I remember someone starting a thread on some unremembered topic a couple years ago, and the first immediate response was an insistent "This should be in the random posts thread." Seems innocuous enough, but that kind of sums up what I think this place has become, as it managed to shame the poster for daring to communicate outside of FOFC's nebulously defined rules, and discouraged others from posting. Even posting something you think is random, funny, and worthless might draw a rebuke in this place, which has a bunch of folks just frothing to correct something/somebody, and/or be offended, at any and all times, and it's not all the mods (though they can surely share in the blame).

I must have gotten some of those combined in my head, there seems to be a random stretch of a few days every so often when different posters across a couple of different threads are boxed. This was the political one from around that time, with a bunch of posters expressing bewilderment over the boxings. (Mostly just me and SirFozzie at first, but then others chiming in on the later pages).
The Obama Presidency - 2008 & 2012 - Page 497 - Front Office Football Central (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?p=2998696#post2998696)
(And if you take DT at face value, THAT is the exchange that led him to leaving, but he may have just been venting over the the separate Patriots thing. Which is always amusing because in those kind of threads multiple posters TRY to get a reaction out of DT. That was the goal. Then he responds, get boxed, and everybody laughed at him.)
I get that DT wasn't everyone's favorite. And there's definitely one or two posters who I'm glad have mostly left after mod drama. And there's a few others I wouldn't mind to see leave just because they seem to have a problem with me (though I've stopped posting in those certain topics where I felt I was being trolled - an amazing thing that as an adult, i was able to do myself without needing mods to protect me with boxings of the scary bullies). Still, I think the mods should be encouraging and not discouraging posting activity at this stage in the board's existence. Nobody has argued that the board is better now. The boxings have made the board worse and more boring, and not better, and I don't see anybody really arguing to the contrary of that. And I don't think anybody's really given a good answer as to how the boxings have protected us or made the board better in any way.

I am a bit surprised that FOF getting on Steam didn't bring a bunch of new young random folks on.
I remember being told for years that the issue with the decline of the board wasn't modding, it was that there hadn't been a new game for a while. Before the new game came out and forum activity kept declining.
You'd think a lively OT forum with long-time posters would be a good thing for a product like FOFC - those posters would always be in the loop, always aware of new games, they probably had some loyalty that made it more likely they would buy a game. Which makes the gradual tightening of the rules and member purges all the more weird. (And the rules HAVE been tightened, just think about the kind of posters we used to have compared to the kind of things that have gotten people boxed in the last few years).

Merged into appropriate thread. *shurg*
I am a bit surprised that FOF getting on Steam didn't bring a bunch of new young random folks on.It did bring a bunch of new people--the biggest influx of new members in nearly a decade. (Some specific numbers are somewhere in the FOF7 forum. Don't have time to look them up.) But overall, post counts are up. New members are up. The number of "active members" (number of unique users who log in per day/week/month) is up. Just not in the place where some people want them to be up. The vast majority of the new people probably just don't come to OT. That's most likely due to the fact that it's 2015, and therefore by now it's very likely that virtually all of the new members already have internet forums where they talk about the same stuff that's in OT.

There was some good discussion in Schmidty's thread (mixed in with other stuff) but I can't seem to find that thread any more (or I just dreamed up the entire thing; I don't remember seeing anyone coming out of the shower).
It is a fact that FOFC activity is down dramatically from what it once was. What are the contributing factors? What can be done to potentially reverse the decline?
I'll take a first crack at identifying some of the possible issues (in no particular order, numbered just to give the issues an identity).
1) Lack of new FOF games prior to FOF 7.
2) Many other options for online activity (Twitter, Steam, Facebook, etc...).
3) Younger generation doesn't have the same love for (or attention span for) text sims that we had.
4) Steam release is great to see but won't really increase activity here as Steam has its own forum for the game.
5) Aging group of forum members don't have the same time (or patience) for the board.
6) Moderator restrictions have ruined some of the fun (probably two part: banning and censoring). Does the number of mods influence this as well?
7) Board layout. Does it help or harm the board that we have so many sub forums? Many people never (or rarely) look at Off Topic anymore.
Thoughts?????

It is a fact that FOFC activity is down dramatically from what it once was. Incorrect. Off Topic activity is down. Overall activity is at a several-year high. See numbers above.
4) Steam release is great to see but won't really increase activity here as Steam has its own forum for the game. Also incorrect. The last three-ish months represent a spike in new members that has never been rivaled apart from a new game release, trumped the FOF7 release, and came very close to the FOF2K4 and FOF2K7 releases. However, as stated above, the new members mostly aren't posting in Off Topic. I don't have firm metrics to tell me whether they're reading and just not replying, or if they're never even clicking on it. My *guess* is that for most of them it's the latter, though. As I mentioned above...

Maybe it's just me, but I'm actually seeing this communication shift at every single online community I visit, rather than just at FOFC. Folks I use to communicate with pretty religiously via long email threads have all tapered off, universal facebook activity seems to have faded after initial flurries, and a handful of the other forums I visit have atrophied in ways & times that mirrored the decline in FOFC activity. All that aside, it certainly doesn't mean some gentle, direct prodding isn't helpful in figuring out the cause and/or increasing activity.
I think that internet communication has evolved over the past couple years, but not necessarily in a good way, and it has stifled communication while claiming to do the exact opposite.
The collective voice of the internet defaults to that of an overly-corrective, instantly offended, narcissistic, sexist, racist teenager, and it can be tiring to fight your way through the chuff every time you want to communicate.
Whether through social media or use of your phone as a primary communication device, short form communication disseminated to as many shallow acquaintances as possible has become the preferable mode of communication, and long form, personal communication is almost discouraged.
For seemingly the first time in the history of civilization there are "wrong"/unpopular/out-of-fashion ways to communicate, and it can be exhausting to try and keep up with how you're "supposed" to be communicating.
Being a kind, considerate person on the internet is rough, tiring work that eventually seems to wear on all of the best posters, and isn't all that rewarding. Being a troll, or even just a slightly contentious doofus, on the internet is instantly rewarding and invigorating.
In long-standing internet communities, it's the crap that seems to rise to the top. Unique/friendly/oddball individuals are just naturally grow tired of being questioned/criticized all the time, whereas longtime trolls are always rewarded with conflict anytime they want it.
The multitude of communication options have combined to dilute everyone's internet attention span and reduce how often they communicate. We're seemingly all on the internet more, taking in more pieces of information, but releasing less...or at least letting out less quality.
Throw all those things together, and I think lots of folk have gone from heavy internet users/posters to more of casual voyeurs. It can be relatively tiring and painful to interact on the internet these days, and I think a lot of folks have tired of it, either through subconscious fatigue or through careful consideration, or somewhere in between.

2013 isn't going back far enough. If you're saying activity higher now than during 2005-2010 range, I'd be surprised. But the mass exodus seems to have taken place several years ago.
My posting and visiting has changed for a lot of reasons. Time is one. Lack of of interesting and engaging content is another. Some of that is driven by the fact that some of my favorite FOFC members are posting less or gone completely. There are probably a variety of reasons those things are true.

To try and *shurg* it off by saying "traffic is AWESOME on the other boards" and the OT must just be getting old and going elsewhere is laughably self-unaware and intentionally dishonest.
This used to be a place we all hung out because we all knew each other, we all liked each other (for the most part), we loved our community and we knew where our friends would be when we wanted to stop by for a chat, and argument, or a HoN.
But since a good number of posters have been forced out and made to feel unwelcome OT just hasn't been the great place to hang it used to be.
And that's due to deliberate actions by people in charge who have an agenda.

Looking through the member roles of posters with 3k or more posts (an arbitrary endpoint) shows the following:
158 of the 251 have visited in the last week.
211 of the 251 have visited in the last year.
27 have not posted since 2014.
7 have not posted since 2013.
10 have not posted since 2012.
3 have not posted since 2011.
4 have not posted since 2010.
6 have not posted this decade.
If there was any sort of mass exodus, it would have been in 2014, except that it seems there were about 2-3 a month who left, which seems like an accelerated attrition likely due to life.
It looks like total posting fell below 10k a month for the first time in June 2013. I don't notice anything in the threads from that time that seem like a reason for this drop.

Yeah, folks have left because of modding BS or issues with other posters, but I think its mostly because lives change.
Obviously it's a mix of those two factors, and maybe a few others, and there can be debate over how much fault to give each one.
But when you have inevitable attrition caused by "life issues", why do mods insist on aggravating the situation by creating such hostility towards posters? Mods should try to mitigate the natural attrition and encourage posting, not act like dicks and drive people away. It's always been an "us v. them" thing, culminating with mods actually using a board app to ruin the experience of posters they don't like. I remember mods chiming in and kind of mocking everyone when mod drama stuff came up. That's not the way a board with a long-term and aging posting base needs to be handled. Older people are less likely to stick around an internet message board when they're treated badly or put in "time out" for whatever reason, because they do have other shit going on in their lives. I remember someone here running into Ksyrup after mods drove him away, and he said it was just a relief not to deal with all that stuff here anymore. (And I believe he was the #1 or #2 all time poster at the time he left). Of all the factors ruining this board, one could have been controlled, but for whatever reasons, the mods decided to go in the completely opposite direction.

Obviously if someone posted a hardcore porn pic or wished death on another poster or shit like that you'd want the offender banned, but the ticky tacky bullshit and the fun some mods seemed to have doing trivial shit, just became too much of an agitation for a lot of people to even bother trying anymore. I dunno if the modding is heavy handed, so much as inconsistent, confrontational, and insulting. 95% of the time this place operates as if it's unmoderated, and then all of a sudden a mod'll pop down and say so-and-so is banned for some arbitrary reason, and that by the way nobody cares about this board (or this part of it), it's not worth complaining about, and that anybody who still posts here are obviously crusty losers.
It's a "unique" attitude for any board's moderation, especially considering the level of discourse, that it's at least semi-officially attached to a commercial product, and the tenure/intelligence of the average poster at this place, at least relative to similar, male dominated sports and/or video game boards.

I was not going to post here again but I have been tagged by multiple people to respond to this thread.
I walked away because I was boxed for two weeks for reporting an exceptionally abusive post. That in itself is an absurdity. But it's worse than that.
My impression is that some racial/religious groups (Christians, African-Americans) on FOFC are treated with far more respect than others. If you're not one of these "favored groups", it's fair game to say anything. It's gotten to the point that some posters have gotten away with advocating that certain groups (ex. immigrants, Muslims and a couple of others) should be executed. Murdered. Killed. It hasn't just been one or two comments either but a constant stream of bile. That's not a lot of fun when you or the ones you love are part of one of those demographic groups.
I don't expect any particular group to be treated with kid gloves but I do expect some semblance of common respect and fairness. I'm not seeing that at FOFC anymore. When I was boxed, I posed this discrepancy to the mods. I never received a satisfactory response. In fact, it was meant with silence.
What it boils down to is if "my kind" aren't wanted here then there are other places to go.
And thus...

Hmm. I always figured Blackadar was African American.
Me too given his reaction and stories in the Ferguson debates, which are personally the main reason I don't bother posting much anymore.
Just to clarify not only because of his posts, but they were the straws that broke the camels back - I can't be arsed to deal with vitriol for having an alternative view to someone else or even asking questions, which is why I found his apparent distaste of being victim of an aggressive post somewhat ironic.
I generally wouldn't make this post this any more, but given people are asking for reasons why posts are down - for me, the board has become more regularly aggressive and distasteful: on that much I agree with Blackadar. (To stress the point, other than a couple of headline posts, JiMGA is actually now one of the more reasonable posters - you may not agree with everything he says, but at least he tries to make his points with debate, not insults or aggression)
Edit to add I am talking about the current affairs threads - outside of these things are generally Ok

For a worthless 2 cents, this used to be my home page. I never had any issues personally with mods but I did roll my eyes at the random times they'd institute their power and folks were boxed or banned. It's just not worth the investment of time for me if the people in charge are more interested in FOF and OT is an afterthought when I haven't personally been interested in FOF for years.

I know I posted earlier in this thread, but I didn't really give much of a reason, so here's what you didn't really ask for:
All you guys grew up and I didn't. I now confine myself to places where people have to choose to put up with my immature bullshit, such as Facebook or Twitter or my house.
So, in short, it's not you. It's me.

For me, life changed. I still visit, I still read and I still post at times. But I am not in front of the desk anymore for work.
I am back out on the road, traveling constantly. Whenever I hit a city I usually let FOFers I am friends with on FB know before I get there, other than that I have moved back to Utah and gotten back into my old hobby of fishing and since it is the best time of year for it here, I am constantly out on a lake or river somewhere catching some fish.

Even posting something you think is random, funny, and worthless might draw a rebuke in this place, which has a bunch of folks just frothing to correct something/somebody, and/or be offended, at any and all times, and it's not all the mods (though they can surely share in the blame).
Man, this nails it. Just go look in the baseball thread.
I make some over the top posts about Jacob deGrom, full well admitting I am being over the top and a fanboy, and some people just can't wait to pull out stats and prove how wrong I am. Then of course the internet grammar/spelling police come calling with pitchforks because I have the audacity to not proofread everything while posting at work or half paying attention and the wrong word auto corrects and they completely ruin what was a lighthearted conversation and banter.
I guess it makes some people feel superior and better about themselves when they correct others spelling and grammar on the internet, but really all it makes them is a colossal douche bag. I hope I spelled that right.

There are definitely random isolated times in this board's history where calling posters douchebags and twits would get you a boxing. If that doesn't happen here, let's see if the board survives or if this little dispute just between Lathum and cuervo72 just fizzles out shortly. That will be a good indication of how much we need the protection that boxings provide, and how much value they've added to the board v. the negative of how many posters they've driven off.

Yeah I agree with you. I think at any point in the board's history you always would have been called out for the DeGrom posts and didn't think any of those responses were mean spirited. The grammar nazis were a little overboard, especially for somebody like you that has been around forever.

I feel like the variety of places I could post these days actually just dilutes my interest and contributes to me not posting. Something like internet fatigue. Like, if I see an interesting news/culture tidbit I could probably post something about it at the place where I read it to nobody in particular, or I could post about in an email thread, or I could post about on Facebook or Twitter, or I could post about it here or any other of a half-dozen places I casually visit.
If I DO post about it somewhere there's no guarantee that I'm going to post in the same place in the next instance, so my attention (and presence at all of these places) gets fractured. Usually though I just get some combination of bored & overwhelmed, and eventually choose not to post at all, anywhere. That didn't use to be the case when I felt like there were only a few outlets for my attention.
Likewise it has slowly dawned on me that communicating over the internet tends to stoke my anxiety, since it can be such a conflict-ridden bitch-fest, and as such my interest in engaging anyone online has faded.

Just for the record, the above wasn't particularly directed at this place, as much as the internet in general.
For all of my joining in on the kvetching in this thread it seems worth mentioning that for a board whose topics focuses mainly on sports, video games, and politics it's still probably less contentious than most boards dedicated to those particular topics. I recently stopped going to the Lions board I frequented for like 15 years when I realized literally all I was doing was getting in bitchy fights about shit I don't care about, and that whatever microscopic slivers of unique "information" I had gleaned from the place wasn't anywhere near worth the effort.
