Ok guys...

I brought my computer back from school to home. My computer is alot better then the one currently home, so I try to hook it up to the current monitor and internet connection, which is road runner. Before I left for school, roadrunner worked fine on my computer. Now that I am back, it will not work. I have an ethernet card. I cant get windows explorer or internet explorer to open. It says there is no IP address. I know everything is hooked up fine. Suggestions?

In changing locations and where you are trying to access from alot could be different, sounds like you need to contact your ISP for the correct settings.

What OS? 98, 2000, or XP?

Have you reset the modem? As simple as it sounds, I had to call tech support to help me with the same problem :).

How do I do that? You see, I can open My Computer because it says Windows Explorer crashes because it cant find an IP address.

1. go to the start button, click on run and type "cmd" then click ok.
2. type "ipconfig /release" press enter
3. type "ipconfig /renew" press enter

This should clear out the old IP and setup the new one. Good luck!

I did what you said and it said that it could not find the DHCP server. I am guessing this is a ISP problem.

I don't know if this is at all related, but I just experienced a similar problem. I got a new computer this weekend, and that meant moving from Win98 to XP. Under 98, I had always manually specified the DNS settings for my ISP. In fact, that's what the ISP recommended. However, doing that would result in a lot of connection tries, and it would even say it was connected, but I couldn't surf anything.

After trying a lot of different things, I tried using the option that would select the DNS settings automatically. Somehow, that did the trick, and I could access the net again. I don't know if that's an XP thing, but it worked for me. Good luck!

If you have a cable modem box somewhere in your house, turn it off and unplug it. Then turn it back on with your computer already plugged in, and that should do the trick.

Worked for my computer last summer, so it may work for yours.
