Salary negotiations

Are there any guides or rules of thumb? I feel like all I am doing is just taking off random amounts and crossing my fingers when I do renegotiations

My rule of thumb for a typical major extension request is to increase year 1 salary by X and remove a total of ~2X from the later years. Mostly to keep it from being too backloaded. Player demands seem to escalate quite a bit in later years.

Of course it depends a lot on what the player is asking to begin with. I'm not really sure where the boundaries are, but this seems to be in the neighborhood -- sometimes it'll get turned down, sometimes not. Interested in hearing other people's practices.

That is pretty impressive. Using what you posted previously has avoided a lot of tough decisions for me already and give a good use to cap space for the year your in.

Of course you don't want to pump everything into bonus for more marginal players, Floyd Mallory is one of the best WRs in the league.

So be sure before you double the bonus $$ on someone so you're not saddled with $9 mil/yr in dead cap.

Yeah, even for a valuable player, I've been hesitant to pump that much bonus into it. I try to feel competitive teams every year and I feel like that's a devastating injury from landing the entire team in serious hot water.

The savings are considerable, however.
