Submitting a question to the collective wisdom of the board. I bought an electric food slicer from the Bargain Cave at Cabela's. It was marked AS-IS/NO RETURN, but I figured for $50 is would be worth a shot. They let me plug it in to make sure it at least would turn on, and it did.

Today I broke it in, and used it to slice a turkey breast. It was fine until about halfway through, and the motor started to smoke. Not good. I took it apart, and it is a very simple design. There is an electric motor, and it turns a toothed belt that drives the blade. I took the blade off, and let the motor run. After it ran for a while, I didn't get any smoke, but I did get the smell of hot electronics. I used an infrared thermometer and got some readings. One set of windings was about 50 degrees hotter than the other three. Would I be safe in assuming that there is possibly something shorting on that set of windings? I don't have much experience troubleshooting electric motors, so any tips or help are much appreciated. If needed, I can post some pics of what I'm talking about.

Not sure how to fix it, but I'm sure the solution is on youtube somewhere

Definitely sounds like a short. If you can, disconnect the motor wires and see if you can compare the resistance across the different windings. Not sure what you can do about yat other than replace the motor, unless you know of a place that will re-wind it.

Wait, it smokes the turkey while cutting it? What exactly are you trying to fix?

I'd prefer a nice wood flavor, like pecan or hickory, not 1970s era Radio Shack.

It's some sort of short. Not sure how you would fix short of replacing the motor.

Shouldn't he be able to nail down which motor is in the thing, and find repair parts from there.

I haven't found the exact replacement motor yet. It appears there is a family of them that share a common initial part number, with various suffixes for different implementations.

If I ever had the space, I'd love to have a nice slicer for the kitchen. We had one a long time ago, but it was more along the lines of the $79-100 variety and didn't really get a very good cut. Lunch meat is so expensive anymore that making your own roasts/turkey breasts has to be a big savings, and you get the bonus of not having 1000 types of fillers and nitrates added in.
