Patriots versus Steelers. The NFL can't handle an angry Tom Brady.

Going to be interested to see how the Patriots play coverage. Will they single up Malcolm Butler on Brown at times, constantly roll a safety over to that side, or play a lot of zone? Le'Veon Bell (and to a lesser extent Martavis) being out is a huge difference, so let's see if the secondary can hold up against a pretty one dimensional offense. That and Gronk's health are our two biggest question marks right now. (I'm not worried about the WR's - Edelman and LaFell will be healthy eventually, and we have plenty of experience with shitty receivers.)

It is football so I'll watch. Despite the horrible off field stuff going on in the NFL, I still do love the game of football.
I would love to see the Pats get stomped tonight, Brady throw a couple of picks and the Pats lose a few fumbles en route to a 44-0 loss. :)

Probably in no small part because the Bears are going to be utterly awful this year, I've found it incredibly difficult to give a shit about football this season.

Can we set the rules for how we are going to deal with this sort of season from the Pats? Is it going to be unsportsmanlike for Brady to be chucking the ball down the field with the Pats up 56-0 in the middle of the 4th quarter or not?

Brady is a slow starter and looked awful in his limited pre-season appearances. I'm sure he wants to do what he did last year after the Chiefs debacle, but he's at the age when the end has a high probability of coming every year.
You can't get fuel from feeling persecution. That's all window dressing and media horse-hockey. They win from being prepared and having the ability to execute plans. It will be interesting to see if Brady can still throw anything resembling a deep ball.
I think this one will be anything but easy. It helps that Pittsburgh's defense is far from the best they'll face this season.

I think this one will be anything but easy. It helps that Pittsburgh's defense is far from the best they'll face this season.Huh? Is the idea Brady is a slow starter based off last year when Gronk was out? Brady's had multiple seasons where he's started fast, but our team is clearly dependent on Gronk at this point (even going back to like 2005, the other times we've looked great were with another elite pass-catcher in Moss.) That one elite guy getting doubles opens up all our other underneath crossing routes. My second prediction was that this is Brady's final season in New England. His contract makes it hard to do that. We had the option last year to cut him for almost no guarantee, but once he was kept past like week 6 it guaranteed his salary thru 2018.(17?) And barring injury I don't see him retiring - he's said he wants to play until 45, and I believe he believes it at this point.
Thanks USAA. I forgot all about how the military paid for the privilege of being honored on those military appreciation days.Anyone use USAA? I'm thinking of switching over... Any red flags or bad PR I'm missing?

Defense deserves a mediocre C as far I'm concerned. That was not an inspiring performance whatsoever from that side of the ball.
Wished the running game had little more zip, but all-in-all hard to argue with that performance in game 1.

The Patriots played a terrific game, but I was stunned at how poor Pittsburgh was. The offense was fine, but the play calling and defense were horrible. Throw in a bad kicker and it was a recipe for disaster.
As far as the radios, I think the Patriots will do whatever they can to win a game, inside or outside of the rules. Maybe I'm wrong, but it really isn't because I'm a Broncos fan. (the Broncos are 3-6 against the Pats in the regular season with none of the losses hurting Denver playoff hopes and the Broncos are 2-1 against them in the playoffs over the last 12 years with the loss being the Tebow led Broncos that didn't belong in the playoffs anyway)
Having spewed all of that. . . there is no way in hell the Patriots had anything to do with bad radios during this game. And there is no way in hell the radios impacted the train wreck that was the Steelers secondary. As a full blown Patriots slammer. . . shame on Tomlin.
stevew
09-12-2015, 12:33 AM
Yeah, this is the dumpster fire of a team we've worked on building for 5 years now. Every time I say anything negative about Tomlin I get called out, but seriously WTF is going on. We've got 3-5 good Ben years left and probably the best WR and RB in the league and I'd be shocked if we make another AFCCG before Ben retires.
And I could go on hours about our cap, but we've got a ton of WTF contracts on a 3/4 MLB(Timmons), a freaking Center(Pouncey) and then numerous secondary guys that make me angry to even say their name. Mike Mitchell is one of the worst players I've ever seen. And he's got an upside down contract still. He was a street free agent the year before (I'm pretty sure) we gave him the largest FA contact in franchise history. We draft linebackers like Matt Millen drafted receivers. Back to Timmons, he's a good player but 3/4 ILB are like 1 step up from street free agents and he's been paid considerably more than any other ILB recently. I swear I'm just about done, I'll have to watch this team go between 8-8 and 11-5 til football goes away.

If the Steelers hit both those FG's and punch it in from the 1 the game ends up being a whole lot more interesting. All things considered I would be pretty happy with that showing on the road against the defending champs.
I don't buy that the Pats were terrific and the Steelers were awful. There were several instances in there where one play changes that game.
I do think that the Steelers will need to prepare better going forward. I saw several things during that game where I was yelling at the TV because they were so obvious and for some reason no one on the Steelers' sideline could see it.

Maybe, but you know what? The Patriots coaching staff was a HUGE part of making sure those one or two plays went their way. Big Ben gives a great play fake and wants to throw the ball to the TE. He's blanketed. The Patriots didn't bite and held their ground. Do I really need to get into how Pitt covered the TE on the other side or how the Patriots manipulated the Steelers defense to make it happen?
I think the refs probably missed the yelling of the snap count on the 1. . . but the Steelers had multiple chances before that. I think coaching and gameplan won the game for the Patriots.
I will agree. . . if that gets better and the Steelers have a break or two go their way, they can compete with the Patriots.

I don't know if you can really say a play on the first drive changed the whole game, but that Antonio Brown pass play really was an awful call. Up to that point Williams was running all over the Pats, they were creeping up allowing Ben open receivers in the middle and that one play just took the air out of a brilliant first drive. Just screamed of a scripted play that they were going to run in the red zone whatever happened but it never should have seen the light of day seeing how well the run game and the mid level passing game was going on that drive.

Early thoughts:
1) The Texans really missed the scouting report on the Chiefs. Cover the RB and TE, give Charles some yards and dare Smith to beat you on third and long. (and when it is third and long, watch the pass to the RB)
They decided to stuff Charles, not cover RB or TE and ensure there is hardly any third downs at all. (The Chiefs only third down conversion was on a pass to a RB for 12 yards) Very sound strategy O'Brien. Very sound.
The Chiefs are paper thin IMHO, but if they stay healthy, they will be difficult to beat if you don't game plan them accurately.
2) Tyrod Taylor lighting up Indy. Did not expect that one.
3) Manziel with some good plays. We'll see how he does in the second half.
4) Hawks offense struggling.
5) I haven't seen the game, but what the hell is the ;Miami gameplan? They have ran the ball 5 times for 5 yards and only 4 of those carries wen to a RB? Considering the circumstances, I think his numbers are pretty good.

end of the road for Peyton? Not looking good so far
I've been pleasently surprised by Peyton. The offensive line is not very good now and they are facing a terrific DLine in Baltimore. His passing has been pretty crisp for most part. (I can count two balls that were low and poor and he missed Sanders deep on a play where he had pressure in his face right at the snap.
He hit Sanders on a deep (30 yard) route later that Sanders didn't get. Would have been a tough catch, but the throw was perfect.
The way to kill Denver right now is to bring delayed pressure. It doesn't look like this line can find anyone on any type of delayed blitz.
The D? Holy hell they are good. 38 total yards for the Ravens in the first half. Flacco is 7-10 for 27 yards. Still a game and one play can lose this for Denver. Would like to see a good drive to start the second half.

Facegaurding is NOT a penalty in the NFL or college. Only some HS states have it.
When I watched the play live, I was sure it was PI and I was sure it was going to be 1st and 2 Ravens with them winning the game. Watching the replay, he was never touched. It was clean and it was an INT.
We'll see more about Manning as the year goes on. I think the arm strength thing was way overblown today. Denver didn't run the ball at all outside of the first and last drive. The offensive line was a disaster for most of the game.

That should be an automatic suspension. I'd say it should go 4 games or more, but as I don't think the NFL has a policy on how long they can suspend someone for on field violence, it'll get overturned in court if they don't just fine him 25k.

First half impressions for the Giants
The Good: Giants special teams covering very well on kickoffs and punts. Defense is tackling well and they're winning the turnover battle. Nice to see the offense line up with 15-20 seconds on the play clock rather than 5 seconds.
The Bad: O-Line still feels shaky, and the offense overall feels out of sync.
The Ugly: No pass rush from the defense. At all.

Rumors persist that Grigson and Pagano do not get along. That isn't going to help this year's cohesion. If the Colts weren't in the AFC South, I'd be more pessimistic about the season. Think they'll still win the division, but there's no deep run for a team with such a mediocre defense. Grigson has build an impressive offense (that will gel though Hilton being hurt now doesn't help), but has not helped the defense. No pass rush will expose an average secondary. Pagano, despite going 11-5 each year and going one step farther in the playoffs each time, will get canned and we'll keep the wrong guy, Grigson.
I'm with Pilot that this is the least excited I've been for the season that I can remember. Maybe it was the drug out Pats story. It probably didn't help that all this emphasis on Fan Duel with the networks seem to put the focus on fantasy rather than strategy.

I thought the pacing of the Dallas offense was horrible tonight. For the first 3.5 quarters, it was lollygag to the line, drain the clock to 1 and snap the ball.
If you are the better team, you want more plays, not less. The less plays equals more variance. They pick up the pace on that last drive and went right down the field and scored a TD. Too late.

The pacing is more a coach thing. As is whoever thought Eli should leave the pocket on third down with no time outs left. What a terrible play call. Just dive if the receiver isn't wide open.

Wow. Whoever called that third down pass play, wouldn't have a job tomorrow. That was just flat ridiculous.

Too late.
They acted like they didn't give a damn and it burned them. Giants didn't look good, but they were good enough.
wasn't blaming Romo, was just stating I hated the strategy.
As far as the rest of my post. . . DOH!!!!!!!
Wow.

Giants screwed themselves. Should have run the ball on 3rd and then on 4th. At worst they are up 3 with about 35-40 seconds left and the Cowboys starting at their own 1.

I can't believe Coughlin didn't call his own timeout when that call came from the offensive coordinator.

Collingsworth did bring up a good point (holy shit). If the pass wasn't there, Eli could have taken the sack/taken a knee, and the result still would have been the same as a running play with the clock ticking.

Only if they had lost tonight. When he wins, it isn't a big game. When he loses, it is because he is a choker.

But why even screw around with it. I'd have had Manning run backwards ten yards then kneel before ever calling a pass play in that situation.

I only wish Brandon Marshall were a Giant and could be interviewed right now.
I hope Dallas appreciates Romo, because that was a great performance. Maybe the Giants have a lousy secondary, but it was a physical game and Romo held up.

Yep, at that point kick the field goal to go up 6 and they have a great shot with only about 35 seconds left after the kickoff. Though I would have gone with 2 runs up the gut. :)

Giants are going to have a rough year. You can't expect that kind of performance from your defense every week.

Ditto. I'd have ran it twice up the gut. At worst, the Cowboys have 35 seconds left to drive from their goalposts about 70 yards just for the chance to kick a field goal.
Seriously, that has to be some of the worst clock management I've ever seen in an NFL game.

Sometimes players stick around too long for their own good. They don't retire even when their body and mind are begging them to.
I think I had a good run as a "fan". 4 Super Bowl wins is a pretty good "fan" career. I think it's time for me to retire from fandom. I just centered my entire Sunday night around this game, and right now all I can think about is all of the things I could have done instead. My mood has been entirely ruined by 1 bad play call and 1 bad penalty (DPI on DRC)...(and some lousy defensive play on the last two Cowboys drives. That 3rd down play was bad, but the defense on the last two drives was downright horrible. Can't forget that.).
Honestly, I'm not just pouting (although, could you blame me? :) ). I've felt this way over the last few years even when the Giants won. When the game is on, I'm fine but once it's over, I feel shitty and depressed. Like I just wasted away a day over something that doesn't matter.
Yeah, I think I should just retire from fandom for my own mental health. I've had a good career.

See you guys in next week's thread. :)

Seriously, that has to be some of the worst clock management I've ever seen in an NFL game.
And it wasn't just the 3rd down play. It's was great to see the Giants get to the line with 20 seconds on the play clock and snapping it with 10-15 seconds on (after years of seeming them get to the line with 5-7 seconds and always hurrying to get the play off), but they were still doing it late in the 4th quarter.
On the Giants last drive, they had clock issues. They finally got it right when everyone was lined up and the 40s on the play clock and the 4:20 on the game clock started. The giants snapped the ball with like 15-20 seconds left on the play clock. So there's 15-20 seconds they could have taken off. And they snapped the ball with 10-15 seconds on the play clock (with the game clock running) on a few other plays as well.
This whole thing with the 3rd down pass play wouldn't have happened if they had run the clock down more on those plays because the Cowboys would have been out of time outs and there would have been under a minute to go, with the clock running, on that 3rd down play.
I had a bad feeling time was going to bite them in the ass when I saw them snapping the ball with 10+ seconds on the play clock. The 3rd down pass play was just a massive shit cherry on top...

Coughlin was wrong letting that call go in and Manning should have just fallen down when the play was covered.
No excuse from a veteran coach and a veteran QB, this loss is on them.

The offensive line was a disaster for most of the game.
it's going to be a brutal week this week. We look banged up. Chiefs will be out for blood. I still love our defense against the KC offense, but I'm not very confident about the other side yet. I hope the OLine gels.
Eh, I only watched it live and I guess they were just lucky the ref had a great angle.
Aqib Talib looks so much like Snoop Dogg I really wonder if they're related.

I only know the facegaurd rule because I kept hearing announcers talk about it and wanted to see what the rule was. It is perfectly legal. It is important to turn and look for the ball, because you can have some contact if you are fighting for the ball. (See the Ravens int today)
Yeah, we are lucky they called it right. If we had the ref who called the Giants for PI, we would have been screwed.

That was what Dallas did on offense all last year. Not entirely sure what the logic is, but possibly protecting the defense or allowing Romo more time to dissect what is being done defensively.

Packers coach defends 'kick Chicago's ass' comment | Chicago Sun-Times (http://chicago.suntimes.com/bears-football/7/71/945290/packers-coach-defends-kick-chicagos-ass-comment)
One week ago, video captured the Packers’ head coach saying that “we will proudly stand as the 95th team in the history of the Green Bay Packers when we kick Chicago’s ass!”
As usual some people talked up the comments to be the dreaded bulletin board that would propel the Bears to the win. During the game, Buck decided to castigate those people.
