Game had it's full release yesterday, and I've already recreated my American Premier League mod for FM16:

Link: TinyUpload.com - best file hosting solution, with no limits, totaly free (http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=92098750495037537884)

Also available on Steam Workshop:
Description:
Steam Workshop :: American Premier League 1.0 (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=554739585)

This is a first release of the American Premier League file. This is designed to allow folks to play American teams without the salary cap management and general pain that MLS rules create.

Sixty Four teams are in this first release:

20 MLS teams in the American Premier League (B teams not allowed)
20 NASL/USL teams in the American Championship
24 NASL/USL teams (including B teams) in the American Challenge Division.

Prize Money and TV money in the top two leagues, life in the Challenge Division offers limited prize money and results based money (more if you win, but a little bit even if you lose).

Also included is a 64 team US Open Cup, featuring all 64 league teams.

This file will be updated with changes (I hope to add a fourth division, and expand the Cup competition.)

Comments and suggestions are always encouraged.

I am going to resist buying this for now. Happy with FIFA and looking forward to the NBA2K16 patch hopefully ironing out a few issues of what is otherwise a stellar game.

Pretty sure i will catch the FM Bug around Christmas again, will see then if i stay on 15 or make the transition to 16.

There are a couple of teams I'm considering. I like the idea of taking an African side, like Melilla, and then promoting them in Spanish league until they get to the top league, and make them pertinent. Or take Bilbao, and keeping to it's principle of only having Basque players, take it to a European Championship

I will be quite interested in hearing your impressions about all of this. I think I'm going to get it, but not right away. I haven't played a version, really, since FM10 (which I still play), and fifty bucks is rather steep for me.

It feels much more stable this year at this point than it did last season. I'm not quite sure how much of an upgrade it is over 15 but I'm pretty happy with it's current state. Biggest bug I've encountered so far is a failure to sub players in friendlies properly.

I'm seeing a LOT of offsides. In strange situations, like when one of my forwards is nowhere near the 4 defensive line players. I'm not sure if it's a bug or my lack of knowledge of the sport. Most likely the latter.

Another thing that I see is players receiving a hard pass will often stop moving, almost like they need to recover for a second before moving with it. This opens up to a possible takeaway from the defensive player. I don't notice that on regular passes.

So far I'm halfway done my first season and am in 3rd place in the Vanarama South division in England, my team was expected to be in 14th place.

Another cool thing that I saw for the first time was a player that I refused to loan out to another team. He came up to me asking to move, and I said no, with "x" reason. He actually called me out on it, saying that's not the reason I gave when I said no to the loan! He left the room in a huff, saying there was no use talking to me. That was cool! I guess I need to pay more attention.

I have noticed scouting takes a lot more time, you have to scout a player for several weeks before all the attributes show up. You get a good idea from the scouting report, (maybe 50% of attributes are exact, the rest are a range) but then if you find a few guys that you're interested in, you have to follow them for a while. I have absolutely no problem with that, it sounds like something that you'd need to do in real life.

I would say it's definitely worth a purchase. It's Football Manager after all, and the product is consistently great year after year.

Starting my second season with my beloved Internazionale. Won the league, and Coppa Italia in year 1. Im loving the constant interaction with my players who become unhappy when I don't play them as often as they like. The match engine is much improved in my honest opinion, and injuries so far are spot on. I just find myself on the edge of my seat more than I have been over the last few versions of the game. Team talks and shouts work really well if done right. The new tactics screen is much much more improved, and I can do everything on 1 screen which I love. I have had no trouble selling players that I list, as well as loaning my youngsters out with ease. Loving the new questions that you get asked by the media, and I don't mind taking the time in this years version to do so, instead of ''sending my assistant'' or asking him to do my half time and pre-match talks. I friggin love this game! Back in Champions League, and face Real Madrid, Man City, and Fenerbahce in the group stage. My board expect me to qualify, but dang is it going to be tough!

For those interested, greenmangaming.com has a 15% voucher, so you can get FM16 for approx. $42. Personally, I'm going to wait for the cost to come down a bit. I love soccer, and the game is pretty cool, but I always have such trouble figuring out tactics, what to look for, etc., that I eventually give up. When would I use a guy classified as an Evangelista, anyway (yeah, I know it's wrong but the position sounds like "evangelista" to me)?

I hate this version.

Defensively Ive seen hundreds of very long passes somehow snake its way between 3 or 4 defenders to land right on an attackers foot for an easy goal.

Defense's just seem to have shut their brains off.

Then, while watching the game on Comprehensive, I can tell when the other team is due to score because all of a sudden they can dribble through my defender's animations, long passes are on a string, and defenders in the box stop marking people. Literally, as the highlight starts, I can call it from the first player on the ball's move.

I actually liked it way more than i thought this early in the cycle (fm for me was generally a 3-patch game before i got into it, now ive already logged 250 hours, even if a lot has been testing of db edits and such. Think i have logged 10 seasons over 3 saves)

whomario

in regards to the defense, i am now for the first time in ages actually playing with a defensive-minded tactic.

I have taken over Stabaek (Norway) in July 2015 and also added a revived "Royal League" (CL/EL like cup for the scandinavian/nordic countries) while giving the scandinavian leagues/teams a slight edge via the editor. Anyway, upon looking at the Roster for the first time i noticed that the team had not even a single striker that deserved the moniker, only 2 wingers that could somewhat-kinda play up front. With little budget i only managed to sign 1 striker, but he´s more of a work-his-ass-off guy than a goalscorer with just 36 in 160 career games (19 workrate, 20 agression, 15 bravery).

So i have now set up a really defensive 4-1-2-3 (1 DM as BWM-D, another BWM-S and a BBM in the centre) with long balls, hard tackling. 9 games into my managing career we have 4 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss with 8 goals scored and just 3 received. Of course the competition in Norway is not stellar, but it is still a nice change of pace compared to my usual 3:2, 3:4 games (with Portland i finished the last MLS regular season with 75-46 goals ;) )

Does anyone know how population is calculated for the purposes of match attendance? Like does FM use the urban population, or greater metropolitan areas?

I'm curious as to how large one could conceivably grow a club (stadium size being an aspect) if you're on the periphery of a major metro, as opposed to in the metro itself.

I'm curious as to how large one could conceivably grow a club (stadium size being an aspect) if you're on the periphery of a major metro, as opposed to in the metro itself.

It's a VERY complicated setup - it uses a large combination of factors including the City they're located within.

A fair proportion is the attraction of the club themselves, how they're performing, the location they're based in and the likely transport facilities within the region.

Some areas for instance have only one professional club in their region are more likely to have a larger fan base than you'd expect because they're within easy commuting distance of large population bases, others have several football clubs vying for attention within their area and this means that the smaller clubs might struggle for attention especially if they're seen as 'historical rivals' of the larger clubs).

There are loads of other factors involved as well the date (some dates are traditionally big football occasions in certain countries, Saturdays in England and Boxing day etc.), the period of the season (last game of the season is often a little better supported than others unless its been a dire season) ... suffice to say its modeled as accurately as possible and half the items going into it probably only make sense to us because we have spent far longer than is healthy looking into this sort of thing ;)

Disclaimer - I haven't looked at the PC code for this side of things since I last worked on it around 2008, I'd imagine its evolved and become even more involved since I wandered off to work full-time on the handheld games ...

Thanks for that detailed explanation, Marc - that's exactly what I was looking for!

For explanation, I'm going to start a new save and will be looking for a lower league club (somewhere in greater Europe) without a lot of history, but in a location where it can conceivably grow pretty big over time, so knowing more about the factors behind that growth (as you described) is very helpful.

Mota
12-21-2015, 07:39 PM
I agree! Sometimes it's hard to take a lower league club and to see it "max out" in terms of growth potential. You're almost forced to go to another team to continue your ascent. I guess it is like real life, the little minnows may climb 1-2 leagues, but I don't know if there's been that crazy ascent from the non-league teams into the Premiership or anywhere near that.

Have a similar issue, especially since my Brazil save crashed and burned due to a scheduling bug (starting in 2019 i was suddenly scheduled to play in youth leagues with my senior team) [likely a result of the mod i was using. The irritating thing is that i holidayed for ten seasons before and that was not an issue in that test]

Now i have going a Portland save (lost interest kinda with the restrictions ...), a Stabaek save (on the fence) and now also have started a save where i have taken over Southampton mid season. That one has some potential as of now for a quick romp about ... A long term save with a good club but also a challenge might be in Spain, because Real and Barca are likely to keep being dominant with their TV deals, making the challenge for titles a big one. In a recent test, they continued to approach the 90 point mark 5 seasons in.

For my really long term slug i´ll wait for the EEE mod (si forums) for the english lower leagues and take over some random club in the 8th or 9th level.

Thanks for that detailed explanation, Marc - that's exactly what I was looking for!

I think as long as it´s not in totally rural backwater and in a non-Top 6 nation (where there is little national TV or prize money), you´ll be fine. There are plenty stories/updates around on the SI board that show that really not a lot is needed.

Besides, with the way the money distribution has developed, gate receipts have become much less important than even 2 or 3 years ago in many countries.

An example from one of my holiday saves, in 2015/2016 (in the FM universe) Borussia Dortmund had an Income of 280 mio, of which only 45 mio (less than 20%) were Season Tickets and Gate Receipts. And thats with Europa League instead of CL (which would have made the percentage even smaller) at the club with the largest attendance in Europe. Juventus only has a 40k stadium.

If you were to start in Germany, essentially every Western or Eastern 3rd division city (or 4th if you download a mod) has the potential to be a big market attendance wise (heck, most have decent numbers even in the lower league). Suggestions i would have: Preußen Münster, Rot Weiß Essen (they do have some history, but its waaaay back), maybe even Fortuna Köln as the ugly step child of FC Köln.

Other suggestions of clubs that i have seen become big in prior versions , which are admittedly not without history sometimes (more of the "fallen on hard times" variety)

Spain: Racing Santander, Cadiz CF, Real Murcia.
France: Strasbourg (good sized stadium and attendance, even some accolades, but semi-pro in the 3rd division)
Italy: Pisa, Lecce, Catania, Robur Siena

First season with my created team almost done. I think there's 4 games left. I'm 2 points into the playoff position, so I need to keep the pace up or else there's 2-3 teams that can easily catch up to me.

My next two games are against the #5 team so 1 spot below me, and then the #1 team the week after. My top MC who has come out of nowhere and has been SHINING (average of 8.3 the past 5 games) is injured with a twisted ankle and is out for 6 weeks. That may have done me in, the backup isn't nearly as good, and my last two games have been a loss and a draw.

I picked up a couple new players at the final deadline. One of them has been great, and the other has been terrible. Unfortunately the great one is the loan player and he's just here for a few months.

This is why I love this game! Feels just like real life.

I've subscribed to SIRFOZZIES American Premier League 1.0 mod in the workshop but I can't figure out how to get it to download in game? Any ideas?

What exactly is the issue ? If it is not showing in the editor data files when selecting them, check in the data folder (C:\Users\Username\Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2016\editor data). Have you restarted both Steam and FM after subscribing ?

Do I have to download the editor or is there something I need to do in game to install it? I've went to the downloads section but it doesn't appear? I honestly just started the game and don't know much about using mods. I have restarted steam and the game.

When you start a new career, you choose “custom“ for Editor data files. Then in the next screen on the top left “choose Editor data files“ .

Scroll down the page in my Link for Screenshots showing this process (and you might consider installing that league pack as well if you want, those would go to the folder i named in my last post). Writing in my tablet, if nescessary more Details tomorrow or someone else steps in.

I just picked this up on the Steam sale. I played some versions a few years ago, but wow, have things changed! There are so many more features, and the level of detail is a bit overwhelming.

I've started with Boston United, in the Vanarama North. Any suggestions on things to focus on when getting started? I'm not interested in turning the details off yet or playing the touch version; I figure I'll learn things as I go along, but I just spent 30 minutes poking around and realized I have no idea what to do.

Are there things that people usually let the assistant manager handle?

If you're concerned about regaining your sealegs you might want to take over a bigger club for a season or two since you'll have more staff and that staff will be more capable when you're outsourcing work.

But like korme I let my staff do a lot of work, particularly training and youth level stuff (including loans). At some point I'll probably look for a good training file set and implement that, but that's not my priority (getting Swindon promoted to the Championship is).

whomario

What do you mean by "training file set" ? Those havent been around for ages, unless we mean different things :)

Training has become soooo easy, its a real good way to shape your team with little effort. Just leave the general team training on balanced and then set your players all to the role you envision them in in your preferred playstyle/tactic. Then with your really promising players you can think a step ahead (as in: Do i want my FB to be a FB or do i maybe want him to be better offensively ? In the latter, just set his schedule to wing back). Individual training now also automatically retrains a players position. So if you give a AMR a CAM schedule (no matter if as attacking midfielder, trequartista or whatever), he´ll automatically train the position as well.

If you set the schedules via each players "development - training" tab, you can immediately see his current suitability when choosing a schedule and also the attributes this schedule emphasizes.

I think the last version I played quite a bit of might have been six or more years ago, so it's been a while.

In previous versions of the game it seemed pretty easy to find good youth talent to shore up a lower level team, but I'm having a heck of a time finding that in this version. Also, all the players I currently have want quite a bit more than what I'm paying them to extend their contracts.

I feel like I'll have an empty team in a year. This could be interesting. :)

I just finished my first season. The good news is that I've upgraded my staff from top to bottom. I finished in 5th and made the Playoff finals but lost. That probably isn't a bad thing, as i have a full season to develop more young players that are able to step up more. This season, in addition to the 3 guys who are in their prime and producing the majority of my chances, I have guys with upside in most other positions that will hopefully be the next generation of heroes.

In FM14 and FM15 you were pretty much given amazing talent for free in the beginning, the staff recommendations were amazing. Now I am scouting all season for good pickups and the majority of what my scouts are finding is inferior to what I already have (at the lowest level team). It seems a lot more realistic in my mind though.

Good to hear I'm not alone in this. I'd agree it's more realistic.

My current defenders stink so I'm hopeful I can find some bodies to replace them. And that they'll work for 5 pounds/week, which is all I can afford.

Noticed this was on sale on Steam again, and saw a surprising amount of negative steam reviews. Even here, usually the FM threads are, well, much beefier. Game's been out for several months now, and barely a 2 page thread? Jeez.

Did people just not buy this one? Or is/was the quality slipping?

One thing: this has traditionally been a 3-patch game with the 3rd in february actually being decisive. That being said i think its been the best patch-2 version of the game in a while ... If the game is harder (and i think it is, especially with the balancing of winger play), i am not surprised at negative steam comments ...

So if you skipped 15, buy it now, wait a week for patch 3 and then go.

I think FM 16 is a much better game than 14 or 15. Much more immersive in terms of dealing with players, managers and the press; very well balanced and the interface is much improved. In years past, I would play a season or two and get a little bored. Not so with this version - a definite buy, IMO.

Picked up FM Touch in the sale, mainly because it was 1/4 of the price FM used to be, only played two matches so far so too early to tell definititively, and I'm playing as Berwick Rangers, Scottish lower tier, and with two 2 star CDs, but the defending is absolutely horrible. I mean "let's run away from the ball even thought it's on the edge of our own penalty box" horrible.

From what I can see the game is a bit more streamlined than 15, but not significantly different otherwise.

Half a season in now, and with some 3.5/4 star defenders it's better. Still some questionable positionng and movement, but nothing outside the realms of reality for Scottish level 4.

Apart from one clip, where my tough tackling left back got a bit carried away and slide tackled my centre half when he was coming out of our own box with the ball :D.

The screen goes blank, I get the spinning circle like something is loading, then my power button starts to flash like my laptop is going into hibernation. That is it, just the spinning circle and a flashing power button. If I close the laptop so it goes completely into hibernation and then open it and log back in I have the tab for the game. If I click on the tab the game is in mid start up (one of the initial splash screens) and will continue to load to the opening screen.

I don't know why I keep buying this year after year. The defense is way off again and players who should be easily good enough for the level they are playing at just make boneheaded decision after boneheaded decision.

It shouldn't be hard to put in a defensive tactic and get my players to actually mark and my full backs not to leave 30 yards on the wing every freaking time. Putting this on the shelf for a bit, very frustrating

This is FM15, but had a play last night that made me smile.

I'm playing as Oxford City in the Vanarama Conference (so, quality of skill not high). Ball is played out from my defense over the top of the midfield and lands just in front of the opposition's back line.

Closest to the ball (but not on top of it) is one of my strikers, who was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay offside when the ball was struck. Instead of touching it, he stays where he is and lets the opposition centre back touch it.

Since this is the Vanarama Conference, one can generally assume that centre back's first touches are, well, shit. And this one is. As if he planned it, my striker takes the ball off the centre back immediately after the shit first touch, and goes through 1-on-1 and scores.

It's times like these when I wish I could give post-game discretionary bonuses. This one would be "for being too clever by half". :D

If you are deadset on using that league and can´t get it to work, i can probably try to upload the 16.2 DB. The Folder is about 400 mb, so i´d need a service that allows to upload that amount as a zip/rar.

If you are trying to run it with another custom league, that could be the culprit. You generally can't do that because you don't know what other things the person edited in their source file, etc., so you can't load his custom USA file and then try to load someone else's custom league file from some other country at the same time.

That's been pretty consistent across editing in other versions.

Yeah, shots don't mean much if they're not quality shots. Perhaps the reason the one team has less shots, yet wins is because they are working so hard to get in quality shots.

flere-imsaho
03-28-2016, 09:46 AM
This is why it's very helpful to expand the range of match stats shown on the match stats screen (there's a "customize" button for this). Knowing which shots were on target, off target, clear cut chances, half chances, blocked, woodwork, long shots, etc... can help adjust your tactic to get better shots.

LaStarza61

I've definitely "pulled an FM" on the computer a few times, meaning I parked the bus, fended off 20+ shots and squeaked a 1-0 win on pretty much my only counter of the day.

When I read these complaints on Reddit or the SI forums (and I'm not saying you're saying this, LaStarza), it's typically from people who are playing big clubs and have never had to do the opposite (as I describe above) and so don't really understand the tactical elements behind breaking down an ultra-defensive side that can still beat you 1-0 on the counter.

I looked up my stats out of curiosity...
FM11: 60 hrs
FM12: 202 hrs (Salisbury!)
FM13: 28 hrs
FM14: 137 hrs

I guess my question is what has changed in the last two iterations of the game. I have plenty of LLM saves I could pick up and run with in 14...

Planning on snapping up Football Manager 2017 and own a previous Football Manager title?

As a ‘thank-you’ to loyal fans of the series we’ve worked with our friends at Valve to offer a Steam-only discount of 5% off for every Football Manager game owned on PC, Mac or Linux dating back to Football Manager 2013. This means there’s a possible 20% available to fans who own the last 4 versions of the game!

As well as the discount, fans who pre-purchase from Steam will also be rewarded with a range of free downloadable content for Football Manager Touch including “Board override”, “No firing”, “All job applications”, “National management”, as well as 3 brand new challenges to play in the “Challenge” game mode.

You’ll also enjoy access to a fully-playable Beta version of the game, which will be available roughly two weeks prior to the official release date.

This offer is only available to fans who pre-purchase FM17 from Steam and, to qualify for multiple discounts, previous titles must be owned within one Steam account. Multiple Steam logins cannot be used.

This pre-purchase offer is available until 11.59 GMT on Friday 14th October so be sure to get the deal wrapped-up well in advance.

I see I have the steam versions since 2009, too bad it doesn't go that back in time for the discount. I would even scan the covers since the 1997 version that I still have stored as collection item, it was the first CM I paid for as before that I was a kid and just got the pirated versions from friends.

I have not missed a CM/FM version ever and won't ever even if I don't play them anymore in the future :)

I still remember the first Football Manager in an Spectrum 8k (that was not related to current FM), my first ever addiction to a video game when i was like 7 years old in 1992. My father found out i expended a whole night playing it without sleep (You couldn't save the game and i didn't want to start again) and punished me without computer for over a month. I counted the days to play it again!

Lately I'm not playing it that much obviously as i grew older and work and family take most of my time, but 2 weeks ago I took holidays and started a journeyman save with no coaching badges and no experience and I'm having a really bad "one more turn" addiction right now, playing until late at night even if I'm not having much success other than a promotion from the National League North.

I've got every even version since CM4. My overall gaming time seems to have fallen off, but FM is always there ready to go.

I started at the FM13 so that's perfect for me :) Wasn't really planning on getting the new version but probably will now unless I get deep into a 16 save before then.

Probably a good way to get those of us who wait until the first sale to get the game anyway. And I do appreciate them recognizing people who end up getting it every year.

Looking through old e-mails (since i got gmail in 2004), I own all but 2011 and 2010 for some reason.

The last CM/FM I played was 01/02 (which even started up again last year, and still got plenty of enjoyment from).

If/when I get FM17, will I feel like SNL's Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer? "I'm just a simple CM player. Press conferences scare and confuse me!"

My 01/02 games followed a pretty standard script: I'd sim out 3-4 seasons, start with a very random team that popped into English Conference by then (Marine or Weston SuperMare or whomever). Get the joy of building them up, get into the Premiership and win trophies in 10-15 seasons or so. Then either have a decline or get bored, and take over a Man U or Barca or whomever who has somehow been relegated, but has like a $800M warchest. Then the game would start crashing around 2027-2030 and I'd curse a lot.

Hopefully new versions let me play out much further. Ideally, I like to play one game indefinitely (past 2100?).

Much better, and I think you want Football Manager Classic mode in FM (that gets out of the advanced stuff if you want).

and it's been very stable for folks all the way out.

FM17 release date announced. November 4th. There is a loyalty discount of 5% per year going back to 2013. If you purchased those games, you will get $10 off the price of the game. No news about features just yet.

I absolutely love this promotion and hope they continue it in future years.

I was buying this game long before I actually knew anything about football or cared. Lately, I've been kind of wanting a bit of a different World Cup challenge and so, I found someone's FIFA World Championship file that creates a different World Cup that happens ever year replacing the normal World Cup, which I prefer. In this deal, every country in the world participates in a single-elimination tournament that is seeded based on world ranking until the Round of 32 then I made it random, in my version.

In his version, the matches are aggregate over two matches, I made mine entirely single-elimination because I wanted more diverse lineups/possibility of upsets and better matchups. We'll run it for a while and see what happens before I can say if that pans out, but the original way it was only the usual suspects that emerged from the field which bored me, of course.

Here's my FM16 Canadian 5-tier database. It's built on top of Sangue Blu's Canadian league, except his was broken because it had too many teams in the top division. I remade the league names, revised many of the teams including colours and injected more money into the league though not to the level of a US league.

There are a few dominant teams that should make some noise, too.

Ugh, I just got fired for the first time in an FM game in a long time. Never could really get the team to gel the way they needed to. It just went downhill from there. The board put a short leash on me, but they had every right, we just kept losing to everyone. Tactic didn't matter, defense was awful, strikers couldn't score. Terrible.

I appreciate the fact that every once in a while I can get fired, but, gah, know that feeling. It's never been a surprise - usually just waiting for the noose.

Can someone tell me what this thread says: https://community.sigames.com/topic/369839-semi-pro-non-contract-issues/

I'm trying to figure out WTF even my youth pulls only sign non-contracts. Evidently it has something to do with this thread, and it's starting to irritate me in my save.

Yeah that thread isn't accessible it seems for some reason.

This is the first post -
'since the update semi pro teams are only able to offer non contracts and cant sign anyone from a club with a semi pro pro contract. and you can sign a player on non contract then the next day someone else will take them from you and there is nothing you can do. if there anyway at all to sort this out and its made it impossible to do a lower league or small country game.

you also cant offer your current players new deals as there on a contract and they wont discuss dropping to non contract"

This is the reason/response from SI:

have checked out the data for Aberystwyth and it looks to be intentional for the club to only be able to offer Non Contract terms to players across different squad statuses. This data was also in place for the original FM16 DB.

If you feel that this shouldn't be the case in game then feel free to mention this in the Welsh data forum and the Welsh HR should be able to shed some further light on the issue.

Thanks, Marc. I'm wondering if it's a league issue in the database, because I don't see any other team in the league with players signed to contracts. I do see a couple in the next league up, however.

I'm still playing this version and I'm getting crushed. I feel as demoralized as my little players do and they are pissed at me right now. I may resign out of embarrassment. It's depressing.
