View Full Version : :CM4: Very Disappointed........

I just simply dont like this game. I respect and applaued the depth and detail put into this game. Its truly more indepth then any sports sim period.

With that said, I'd take OOTP4/5 over this game anyday of the week. I'd take FOF4 over this game anyday of the week. I'd take EHM over this game anyday of the week. I could go on and on....

The amount of bugs in this game is incredible. Since buying CM4 i've had to download around 70 megs worth of patches. And its still nowhere near complete. I downloaded EP3 yesterday and attempted to get back into the game. The Striker bug is finally fixed, so other players on your team besides strikers actually score every once and awhile now.

I've played through 2 1/2 months so far and i've had about 10 injuries. Half of them from TRAINING!!!! A Twisted knee here and a Twisted ankle there. Half my freaking team is injuried. This is soccer for GODS SAKE!!! not Football, there shouldn't be so many dam injuries.

The 2d match engine is beyond boring. You get a few highlights during the game which is cool. But there are plenty of games were there's 1 highlight total. Thats just plain boring.

Training is a disaster, I cant figure it out for the life of me. Actually i dont wanna figure it out. Why the hell does it have to be so dam complex??? And if i let my Assistant Manager handle it i know he's doing a shitty job.

Trying to sign free players is a joke. I'll find a guy and no other clubs are interested in him. Then i try to sign him or offer him a Trial and everyone and they're mother decides to try to sign him.
Another thing with Free players is your retarded scouts never find any. The only way to find free players is to go to the SI Good player forum. And most of the players there are expensive as hell.

No customazation what so ever. There's no injury settings, computer AI settings, no scoring settings, nothing. Your just stuck playing the same way every time.

Simulating games takes forever.I have a very fast computer tweaked to hell and back, just for gaming. But i still simulate slow and im only running 6 total divisons.

CM4 just doesnt pull me in like other sports sims do. I dont really feel like the team im coaching is mine! I could go on and on but im tired. I seriously dont see what all the hype is about this game. Maybe CM3 was great but CM4 is horrible in my opinion. Sorry Marc.... just being honest.

I have it...I'm really getting into it now (took a while)...nto experiencing any bugs...

From your post, it sounds like you're not into soccer really, and that may be the root of the problem. As far as the 1 highlight per match..well, I've played 3 seasons, and can only think of maybe 2 games that have been that uneventful...

it's definitely better than CM3 now that EP3 is out.

'tis quite all right, I'll always prefer honest feedback to anything else.

Have you tried installing EP#3 yet? - as this tunes the game engine an awful lot (bear in mind that CM3 had evolved over a period of 7+ years so getting CM4 up to that standard will take a bit of tweaking initially) ....

I'd also be interested in specific points you liked/hated if you wouldn't mind posting them after you've tried that update - as such feedback would help me evolve the game in the 'right' way for the future.

Agreed.

This style of game doesn't appeal to everyone, so there are always going to be some who just don't like it for whatever reason. But for me, CM4 is by far the best sports sim out there.

Don't see all of my replies here as negative, but thinking over the possibilities might clearify some of your points.

So, what's your point?
That too little of your players got injured?
I think CM represents real life very well if this is true.
It's not like every team has 3 injured players, some are lucky and have 0, others are unlucky and miss 8 players in a game.
Don't compare soccer to football, they're completely different sports.

Trying to sign free players is a joke. I'll find a guy and no other clubs are interested in him. Then i try to sign him or offer him a Trial and everyone and they're mother decides to try to sign him.Well, this sounds like real life too. As soon as teams try to sign players, there are always teams coming out of nowhere trying to 'steal' the players from you.

Another thing with Free players is your retarded scouts never find any. The only way to find free players is to go to the SI Good player forum.I doubt the game engine is different then in CM3 on this part, but if it is different, I have no awnser to this. Else, did you assign your scouts to go out and watch players or are they just sitting in their offices and getting paid for peaking their nose?

The 2d match engine is beyond boring. You get a few highlights during the game which is cool. But there are plenty of games were there's 1 highlight total. Thats just plain boring. Some soccer games in real life are so boring that the tv programs showing highlights have to stick with one or two actions in total. It happens, not very often, but it does happen.

I don't think the amount of injuries is at all out of line - even the quantity you're experiencing. I have a season ticket to Chelsea games and I can't remember the last time that the physio's column in the programme had updates on less than two players. Normally, it's somewhere between three and half a dozen. Now, that's the fourth-best club in England. Your team had worse training schedules (unless you got incredibly lucky by accident) and, unless you were managing another of the Premiership elite, worse physios/training facilities/medical facilities.

Similarly, the boring matches are quite realistic. Ever seen Liverpool play?

The sim speed and jump-on approach to free signings are both legit complaints, though. I've heard a rationale behind the tendency to pile bids on, and it is true, but it doesn't work in as many cases as the CPU does this.

BTW, if you don't like the highlights you can either watch the full game in 2D or not have any highlights at all and just have text like in CM3. Pretty flexible IMO.

So far CM4 hasn't pulled me in like the previous versions. I'm not sure I can put my finger on why yet. The 2d view is cool, but I think I might go back to the text commentary and view the highlights after the match.

I think the speed has something to do with it. I'm ordering some more RAM (at 256 now), so hopefully that will help. I can cut down on the leagues, but the little delays in the new match engine are kinda annoying.

I just downloaded EP3, but the game crashed during the middle of my first match (this never happened before). Hopefully this is a one time deal.

Since this is a completely revamped version I know it will only get better. I'm just not sure it I'll put off playing it until CM4 03-04.

I have not played the CM4 yet but have downloaded the demo. One soccer sim that I have played off an on over the years and still catches me is the old Sierra Sports Ultimate Soccer Manger 98. It has a good interface and decent options. The business side is fun in that you can build your stadium up as you start in the bottom division and fight your way up. I wish I could find an update for this game or someone would but it from Sierra and update it, it is fun for me anyway.

a couple of suggestions

1-scouts-have an option for the scouts to find players who are out of contract or will be, that way you can get a jump on shortlisting them for 2nd season and beyond, also greater knowlege of existing players who are realistic targets for the club in year 1 would be a plus(you will have this information after playing a few times if you look at the transfers)

2-More feedback on training-while there is some, a weekly report from your assitant manger would be nice on fridays to see who may deserve a shot with the first team for the weekend game

3-MLS Superdraft-its really a crapshoot in CM4 maybe a mock draft rating by your head scout have him rate the players he doesn't have to be spot on but as it stands now i have no idea how to rate the players with no information to really go by.

i still really enjoy the game though

I'm loving the game as well.

Marc, a couple of things:

1) there is a problem with the 4th and 5th players on the tactics screen, specifically that their condition fades quicker and they are generally 5-10% lower than every other player, and by the hour are less than 70% condition while the rest of team is still at 80%. I thought this was a DC problem, but I have changed tactics and the players in those spots are still affected by this, despite no longer being DCs. I have also played those same players at other spots in the tactics, without it happening to them. It's not the player instructions as well, as I have had three DC's with the same instructions, but only the DC's in the 4th and 5th spot are affected. I don't know if what I'm describing is very clear though.

2)There is no tackling from the defense in the league that you are playing in. League wide if you have it on full detail. I don't know if this is a 2d engine issue, but the stats seems fine in the background leagues that aren't full detail. Example...Tackling/Game average in the Northern Irish Premier Division is around 5 for the top defenders. Under 1 for top defenders in the English Premier league.

3)There is a problem with some leagues and fixture congestion causing the league to be suspended a year. Particularly with Portugal and Spain during WC and European Championship years. This causes me to not have those leagues selected at startup as I don't want the top teams missing out on European Cup play or missing a season of play.

I know you've found a fix for the injury and changing job problems as well as coming up with a more detailed training help file (when time permits), so I think that pretty much covers everything I would have had a problem with. Gotta say, great job.

I'm also enjoying the game with EP3. Once the changing job problem is fixed, there are only two things I'd add that had been removed from CM3:

1) I'd still like to have green and red attributes for improvement/deterioriation in training, rather than a simple up or down arrow. As it stands now, I'm not sure if my training regime is having the desired effect, despite several green up arrows.

2) The manager points screen is something I always visited. It was great seeing your name work up the list as seasons went by. A fun part of the game that was taken out... :(

One thing I would like to see get fixed is that Toronto/Calgary/Montreal of the American Second Division aren't actually in the United States.

Otherwise, I LOVE the DOTS. I know I'm easily amused, but this adds so much to the game. And a suggestion if you think you aren't seeing any highlights, click on extended or the other option instead of just highlights. Then you see lots of DOTS! Oh and I have the Ghanian duo. Ismaeh Addo and Freddy Adu in the striker positions is lethal. :D

The FOFC community seems to like CM4 way more then the CM4 community does :)

If soccer players in real life get injuried as much as they do in CM4 then i've lost a hell of alot of respect for professional soccer players. In the last month of simming i had 3 guys get injuried in training and 3 guys injuried in games.

What sort of lengths are we talking about here? Unless they're all long-term, that sounds like a bad-but-not-awful month for Chelsea and, as I pointed out, they're a LOT nearer the best-case scenario as regards injury probability than your team probably is. Why is your respect for professional athletes dependent on their ability to avoid injury?

All of my injuries are small bangup ones (and I've had a ton)...and playing at a pretty high-level of a certain sport, I can vouch for this...it happens all the time. The day after a game, a guy might no practice because he's a bit banged up. I've only lost 1 guy for more than 2 weeks (Ian Harte tore his hamstring...missed 2 months rehabbing).

This game is working very well now.

I just hit a spell where I lost 3 of my 4 first-team strikers for 4 to 6 weeks, and all the injuries happened in the span of one week of game time. Thankfully the guy who is not injured is the one who has banged in 6 of my 7 league goals so far :D Hopefully this will just be a temporary thing and will not continue. Judging from the SI Games messageboards, comments there seem to indicate a split on whether or not people think injury levels are ok.

i guess im just surprised at the amount of players missing games due to injuries. The reason i compared it to football was because there are just as mant players missing games in soccer as in football. And in football guys are 300 pounds running full speed into eachother. In soccer there is so pushing and shoving, but nothing like football or hockey.

But if thats how it is in real life then im wrong again i guess. I just think its sad that i have a player who played the entire game and played well with no mention of injury, then the next day i get a message saying he's gonna miss 3 months due to a shoulder injury???

Another one of my guys twistes his ankle in pratuice and misses 2 weeks??? 2 weeks for a twisted ankle??? he should be able to play but only play at like 90% effectiveness.

I played an entire year of high school soccer with a torn liagment in my ankle. It hurt, but i still played. Football players break bones and still play. Hockey players get get stiches and lose teeth and keep playing. But my guy twists his ankle and misses 2 weeks?? come on, no wonder Americans hate soccer... its filled with wussies!!! ;)

I got this one guys. :D

Pushing? Shoving? Thats it????

Come on now Havok. Have you ever watched a competitve soccer game. There is tackles with no pads. Only the tackles are done with the feet, not the hands in other sports. I have had numerous cases where players come up and smack me in the balls , only to discover I am wearing a cup. (I am a goalkeeper)

You see alot more injuries, even though soccer players, for the most part are more conditioned to avoid injuries. The more fitter you are, the more likely you are to get injured.

Calis

Yeah, add in the fact that running is a major muscle tightener, and soccer players run a helluva lot more on average than Football players, it's not hard to imagine a lot more muscle pulls, etc...

It ain't a picnic.

GE- For some reason I look at your post and I've stared at the term "more fitter" for 10 minutes...I can't stop looking at it. :)

there are guys that play with some serious injuries, where the extent isnt known 'til after the game. Reuben Droughns played with a broken ankle once...they thought it was a sprain, kept taping it...he kept playing...after the game it was dsitll hurting, the x-rayed...broken.

I too am struggling to get into CM4.... and I have been a huge fan of all previous versions.

The interface is annoying - there are issues with it defaulting back to the "traditional" screen all the time, numerous clicks are needed to sort players when in the past only one was needed, the ticker is pointless, the scroll bars are bothersome on the scout pages, etc, etc...

I miss the simple things like "days to next match"

I miss the "past meetings" comparison

There are too many injuries (and SI knows this I am sure)

The 2D screen is nice but has many quirks (throw ins to opposition, offisides that technically aren't, etc)

Training is a nighmare (I have no clue)

The game runs much slower than CM3. I ran CM3 on my old laptop and it flew, now on my brand new XP2400 desktop with all the bells and whistles it is slow (not unbearable, but noticeably slower) even with only a few leagues selected.

Changing jobs seems impossible

Media interaction is neglible... things get missed alltogether

In the past CM3 made you feel really immersed in the day to day running of a club... you felt like you were part of every decision and you felt part of your league environment. CM4 makes me feel like I am running a complex database with limited soul....

I am trying desperately hard to like it, but so far it is just frustration.... I think SI will make this game into it's true potential, but I am starting to think that might not eventuate until the 03/04 version arrives.

I agree that people getting injured after carrying on fine throughout the match is an annoying bug, but, again, this has happened. One name that springs to mind is Bert Trautmann, the Manchester City goalie who played a full FA Cup Final with a fairly serious injury. Broken collarbone?

Marc Vaughan

Changing jobs bug - will be fixed in EP#4, only affects moving to larger teams (or between countries to a certain extent).

You can do a 'quick' fix if you have an editor which allows editing of human player attributes by changing a humans ability setting from 80 to a higher value (in EP#4 human ability is now 'percieved' via. their reputation for the purposes of job movement).

Game Speed - I would recommend that you turn off 'full-detail' if you are finding the game slow, this speeds up the game processing a great deal and 99.9% of people will notice no difference in the games simulation (apart from being unable to view 2D on some match histories for matches they weren't involving in).

Injuries - an interim patch will be released in the near future to further refine these.

Kosta

thanks for the response Marc. I have full details off already on all the other leagues I am using (about 6 countries) and only on for England. Like I said it is not totally unbearable, but the issue seems not to be with game simulation but with the periods during a day (when seemingly nothing is happening). Sometimes on a Monday going from 9AM one morning to the same time the next day takes quite some time (I never found this with CM3).

I'll experiment with different database sizes perhaps?? I suspect that may make a bigger difference.

Where/how do you redefine the detail on leagues that you're not in. In other words, if I've already started the game, how can I shut down the extended detail i those leagues where I don't need it? I can't seem to find that option anywhere.

i'm pretty sure you can't change the detail level once you've started a game. when you are first starting a game there's a check box next to each league you select to toggle this on or off

We haven't decided upon future plans (ie. whether we will make a CM03-04 or whatever) ... however it is likely that SI will continue to make games in the future.

So yes at some point* SI will make a new game/seasonal update (delete depending upon opinion) and you will have to purchase it to play it.

This is purely down to economic factors and unfortunately my bank-manager has yet to accept that myself and the rest of SI should be afforded unlimited withdrawals from our accounts regardless of our actual balances ... once this small matter has been rectified SI will obviously be glad to work for free upon all our games ;)

* Please bear in mind we haven't finished enhancing CM4 yet, there is at least one further EP planned (EP#4) at which point I'll review the 'state of play' and decide if further EP's are required.

Marc,

First of all, from what I can see, EP3 is a huge improvement.

However, two little beefs I've encountered:

1) I have a saved game that crashes whenever I respond to an opposing team's counter to my original transfer offer (this is an MLS league, so it's effectively a trade of players). Posted on this in the SI Tech Forum, not much of a response yet. I don't know if this is a result of the original corrupt download of EP3 from Blueyonder Games (though I didn't have the problems others did with game crashes) or if the saved game is hosed, or what.

2) The second thing is more of a future enhancement wish, One thing that I wish we could do is save training schedules in the same manner as you can save tactics (i.e. so that you can access training schedules created for one saved game from another game, without having to re-drag and drop everything in).

The reason I'd like this is that I have about a dozen schedules, broken down by position and a couple of specials for preseason, disciplining slackers, etc, and it's a pain in the rear end to have to plug them in when I start a new game.

If you can get the save game to me I'll see if I can repair it, its likely that something 'odd' happened if you ran it with a corrupt exe file ...

The reason I'd like this is that I have about a dozen schedules, broken down by position and a couple of specials for preseason, disciplining slackers, etc, and it's a pain in the rear end to have to plug them in when I start a new game.
This is something that I'll try and put in the game at some stage, however its more a design oversight than a bug and for that reason I'm afraid it might be a little while before I get around to doing this (as I'm trying to fix all 'true' bugs before adding in any new features).

Sent you an email. Let me know how you want me to get it to you.

No worries. I figured that was the case. I just figured that if somebody doesn't say something, you might not know where to improve.

It's not impossible to work around, it's just one of those "would be nice to have" things.

No offense to MV or SI, but it would really suck if EP4 was the last of the free enhancements. Many did not play until EP3 waiting for the bug-fixes and some will be waiting for EP4. As much as I love this game, I'd have to really question if I'd dish out more money for a new version of a game that I really hadn't had much chance to play because of waiting for enhancement packs.

Although I don't agree with every point, Kosta pretty much nailed all the major remaining issues I have been reading at SI.

No offence taken, but as I indicated the number of future EP's will be at least partially dependant upon feedback from people.

We haven't indicated a release date (even roughly) for EP#4 or what it will contain so its impossible to predict currently if it more will be required.

As I've repeated before though I will continue to support the game until I feel I am 100% happy with the state of it.

John Motson:

"And Sunderland are making a double-substitution to protect their 2-goal lead.

But what's this? Whilst we were all watching Kevin Phillips and Marcus Stewart leave the field both goals have been rubbed out! Amazing! And now relegation is staring the Mackems in the face quicker than you can say 'worst episode ever'."

And that's what keeps me coming back. Thanks Marc.

Sunderland? Two goals up? I think the goals getting erased is the more realistic part of that.

Seriously, although I haven't suffered from the bug myself, I can see how it would be really annoying to have happen in the middle of a big game. Especially if you've almost achieved the impossible and kept Sunderland up.

Quick aside - if anyone has experience the injury problem in EP#3 please let me know via. email to [email protected] ....

Some feedback for Marc.
This is with EP3 applied - No injury bug problems, but have noticed these minor problems.

Occasionally the game sticks on the 2D screen whilst time is passing, with no highlights playing.
Occasionally the game sticks on the overview screen when there are 2D highlights playing (the 2D tab is highlighted, but it doesn't automatically switch).
The hand cursor still selects the item under the middle of the hand, rather than the item under the upraised finger.
When the view changes between the 2d and overview screen, the goalscorer and/or time he scored frequently disappear from the overview screen (score doesn't change).

All minor cosmetic irritants, but as my id doesn't work on the sigames board, just wanted to ensure you are aware of them.

Apart from these, no real problems since applying EP3.
P.S just signed you and Miles Jacobson for Swindon Town - the Collyer brothers had the cheek to turn me down :)

I just got CM4 today and have messed around a bit with it. Interfece is new and jury is still out on it. Anyone else notice Tim Howard being one of the best goalkeepers in the world?

I think the interface is somewhat harder to read, but I'm learning...just have to find a team I'm comfortable coaching.

True, that is probably what I will do too Qwik.

Leeds! They're cash strapped, but have some talent. Kewell, Viduka, Smith, Mills, Radebe, and Robinson have been great for me so far...

Well, I'm a trader...I know that right now that is almost impossible to do, I like to flush out the old and bring in the new...I'm playing West Ham, I kept Joe Cole, but I'm having a hard time getting rid of other players...which sucks.

When the hell did Kim Kallstrom become a defensive mid...he was a great attacking mid.

Marc, please bring back the ability to go from the news to your assign scout screen when they are done. It was nice when you could mouse over and click and it took you right to his list and you could reassign him in two clicks now it's pretty teadious.

Hammers aren't having any problems getting rid of their players in real life :)
