View Full Version : possible game log bug?

I already sent this in as a potential bug report, but has anybody noticed strange things about pass rushers in the game logs? I'm assuming somebody has and if so apologize, but I didn't find any mention of it in the forum so thought I would post just in case.

Anyway, in a 4-3 defense, according to the help file and in real life, the four down-linemen rush the passer on pass plays. Sometimes a DE will drop back in a zone blitz in the NFL, but by design this doesn't happen in FOF:

four linemen in a three-point stance in the 43, will rush the quarterback on pass plays. While in the NFL, defensive ends sometimes drop back in coverage (this allows them to implement a zone blitz out of the 43, as one example), in Front Office Football it would add too much complexity to game planning.

But when you check the logs of any team that runs a 4-3, it always shows three pass rushers and the RDE in short zone coverage on pass plays. I haven't seen a game log where the RDE rushes the passer. This happens in every type of coverage against every formation for both the 4-3 over and 4-3 under. Even in a goal-line formation where there should be five down linemen rushing the passer, four rush and the RDE is listed in a short zone.

The question is, is this just a cosmetic reporting error in the game logs or is the RDE really playing a short zone and not rushing the passer in the game engine. I have to think it's the former, but I haven't simmed enough seasons to know how the sack/pressure numbers are adding up. Any insight on that?

Here are a couple screenshots, you can check your logs and should see the same thing:

And in this shot you have a basic 3-4 defense against a 212 formation and the game log lists 2 pass rushers with a DT, a LB, and a CB all spying the quarterback. Don't recall ever seeing that before:

btw, these are screenshots for AI teams so there's no issue of me making a game planning error.

(really not sure why I can't post an image rather than a link, always thought it was just an image link inside value)

About to walk out the door, but I'm pretty sure I've seen some good PR numbers from my RDEs in the 4-3. I'll check in an hour or so.

This is very interesting. Note that in-game Chris Long's position is an LDE:

Chris Long did have 7 sacks that season.

a 4-3 defense lined up as a 3-4, did the play that way the whole game?

Al Fagan, with modest pass rush skills (67 PRT, 53 PRS,) and some guys around him who are better, had 7 sacks, 11 hurries, and 11 QB knockdowns from RDE last year. Here's one of the sacks.

1-10-ATL38 (4Q: 13:52) Nathan Workmon sacked by DE Al Fagan for a loss of 1 yard. Sack allowed by Lance McGarity.

OK. Just found a 4-3 RDE on an AI team who was among the league leaders in PRPCt (7.8, 10 sk, 17hurr, 32 QB kdnn in 12 games). Found a game in which he had three sacks. In all three cases he was RDE and was "short zone." Sounds like a cosmetic bug to me...

I think so too. If it was game engine rather than cosmetic, it would show up in a lot of different stats. With eight in coverage most plays, running backs would go wild, etc. You'd also see RDEs with pass defense stats they wouldn't otherwise get.

QB better not even think about scrambling...
