View Full Version : Offensive Style

Just setting up an Air Coryell playbook. Off the bat no plays appear to be a "best fit". In the passing offense most plays are rated "solid", if not a few quick changes can get them up to that rating.

The running game appears to really have problems though. Nothing is even "solid". Is there a way to better fit running plays, or is this style dead in the water when it comes to the running game?

This style is supposed to have a power running game bonus.

On face value this style has problems before you even start. Best avoided?

I was thinking about this style for one of my MP teams and ran into the same issue. I believe I may have been overly bound to the chart and it is better to trust the Fit in the play design. Changing the primary route doesn't seem to change the Fit as much as I thought it might though.

Power versus finesse running has more to do with the formation including QB depth as well as obviously direction. Here are how to get Solid in Air Coryell running in the most common formations:

122 Str Shot - holes 3 4
122 Wk Shot - holes 2 3 4 5
203 Pro Shot - all holes
203 Pro Pist - holes 2 to 6
212 Pro Shot - all holes
221 Pro Shot - all but 3 4

So pretty much you can kiss I-form and normal QB depth goodbye. Still, this is 33 running plays so if you have them all in your playbook then you could still run close to 50% of the time, how effective it will be and what kinda back works best from the Gun I couldn't say.

Curious to see what others have seen though...

Thanks for that, very informative post. I imagine the benefit of getting to solid is outweighed by running from the Gun and maybe somewhere around even from the Pistol?

I can't see what you gain from running from the Gun. Not as though the defense responds to it. Having said that maybe there is a variation bonus.

I ran a test involving the same gameplan simmed multiple times. One had all passes from the Gun, the other had all passes from Normal. As there seems no obvious downside to the Gun I thought why not run it every passing down. More time for the QB, haven't seen any fumbled snaps. As it turned out my all Gun passing offense was consistently worse than a standard passing attack. More interceptions, although it didn't kick up more familiars. Could be a sample size thing, but I have seen enough to put me off the idea.

might be because, at least in reality a shotgun formation is usually a pass so the defense may be keying on pass coverage more often against the gun than they would a normal depth QB

I found the same in early GP testing myself.

the only way that I found to get a best fit with Coryell was a pass in shotgun with pro alignment but... the play could not be confirmed, the only alignments you can have in shotgun are strong and weak. Bug or feature?
More generally, could some of you achieve a decent offense with/despite this philosophy?

I am working with it in a MP league. Pretty good talent, but down on last years production. No evidence to blame it on Air Coryell, but my gut says it hurting the running game
