Pales in comparison to LV, I know, but Petty apparently had a heart attack and is in critical condition.

TMZ, which is usually pretty accurate with these things, is saying that life support was pulled.

My question is, if he was found Sunday night and rushed to the hospital unconscious, why are his people posting on Twitter on his behalf at like 9:30 this morning?

RIP.

Ksyrup

I was wondering the same. The fact that TMZ went from reporting his heart attack to life support pulled in about 30 minutes tells me they kept this pretty well under wraps. Maybe his own people tweeting to keep up appearances, or maybe they were in the dark and routinely posted stuff like that.

that happened with ... someone else, celebrity-wise, a few months back IIRC.
I just can't recall who it was off-hand.

Those posts are almost always scheduled via Buffer or some other app. Very rarely are there minions preparing to tweet things on the fly unless it's a video or a response to a live thing.

Don't feel guilty. It just shows your capacity for caring. This event hit me hard, too. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Greatest Hits was an album I listened to a lot in my middle school and early high school years. Still one of my favorite albums of all time.

It's another blow in what already was an awful, awful day.

indeed

I can't remember exactly the first TP song I heard...oh wait it was Refugee!
That's right. I remember it because that song was on "Chipmonk punk"

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TXNJTd5aSoo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

then i went looking for the actual song.

My first MTV experience of him was YOu GOt Lucky...

I loved when he shot the video game.
Loved that song ever since.

And of course the video that became one of my favorites of all time...

"Don't Come Around Here No More"

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/h0JvF9vpqx8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I played the hell out of that song on college radio.

And was happy in 2010 they finally did a Classic Albums episode for Damn the Torpedoes. Love his stories, esp about Jim Keltner

I don't think the story actually changes, but TMZ has this:

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

CBS, Billboard, NY Daily News and a few others have reported it within the hour, but LAPD just tweeted that info was inadvertently given to media members and hasn't confirmed it.

Some perspective on the nature of ... time?

Petty's last significant hit was 23 years ago.
And it's been 29 years since the debut of Travelin' Wilburys.

As others have said, what a sad day. Saw him in Des Moines in June and was trying to guestimate how old he was figuring had to be mid to late 60's. Concert was awesome and I marveled at the energy he put into it.

I am generally indifferent towards his music. Don't love it don't hate it, wouldn't change the radio station when one of his songs started playing, but not an artist I would actively seek out to listen to either.

That said, Runnin' Down a Dream is one of my favorite songs of any artist.

RIP, Tom.

Strangely, I never ended up buying a CD or MP3 although I had a few LPs/cassettes. Damn I'm old. I saw him once, somewhere in the bay area during the summer of 1985. I remember that show mainly because my aunt/uncle were smoking pot right next to us the whole show, plus my brother (who was around 10) slept through pretty much the whole show not 10 feet from a stack of amps.

But yeah, he's an artist I've always liked musically and as much as I knew of him as a person. And as there are fewer and fewer rock stars alive anymore, it feels like larger and larger pieces of history are going away every time one of these guys dies.

His solo stuff was kind of like Phil Collins to me. If it was on the radio in the background I would listen but never owned any or sought any out. The Traveling Wilburys was some pretty solid stuff though. How much was Dylan and Harrison I guess is a legit question but the music was great. Tweeter and the Monkey Man is one of my favorites when it comes on the radio once in a blue moon.

I saw him in Chicago a couple years back and he was at the point in his career where you can tell he was just having fun smoking up and jamming with his buddies. It was such a fun concert to be at because he was having dialogue with the audience showing not much was pre-planned and they were just winging it.
