I thought he had already died actually since there was a James Burrows special on TV including a Frasier cast reunion and he wasn't there.

He really helped ground the show.

In terms of comedic acting talent, I don't know if there's been a better trio than he, Kelsey Grammer, and David Hyde Pierce.

I can't believe he was only 53 when Frazier started. I think he is only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammer. I don't know if ages were ever given or discussed on the show, but they each played a part about 10-15 years older than their actual ages. Or at least, that's how it seemed the show was set up (I don't recall now).
