Sorry if we have a thread on this already. Some sports start tonight, including the ever popular Curling event. The Olympics Channel or whatever NBCSN is calling itself these days has the telecast. I think there is some skiing too. Can we try to keep this thread politics free please? Try to avoid spoilers too! Can be hard with the time difference I know
Good luck to the athletes from whatever country you live in!

Just to clarify, the NBCSN and the Olympic Channel are two different channels. I'm not sure all cable companies have the Olympic channel. We didn't have it on DirecTV but do on FIOS.

I'll confess. I walked in and it was on the screen when they lit up the symbol in the arena for the opening ceremonies and my first thought was Pepsi, then I remembered that it's in Korea.

XFinity, which I will bash at any opportunity, has been great. You can essentially watch everything live on TV through their Olympic App. And if by chance you can't find something, the NBCS website has it. I was watching the speed skating and the USA/Finland hockey game live last night at 3am and it was great.

The standard NBC TV coverage is laughably bad. Showing stuff live has actually almost made it worse, because now they cut interchangeably between live stuff and stuff that happened earlier (or even a day earlier) and don't seem to have any rhyme or reason or context to what's happening. They had live ice dancing on one station yesterday and then the recording of what happened earlier in the day on the other - what on earth is the point in that? I swear I watched the same routine three times at some point in the day.

Refereeing in the Canada/Finland womens Hockey game has been awful. They missed a clear goal which got overturned on replay. Then they missed a 2nd one that somehow was not overturned even though it was clearly in the net. Only thing I can think of is that the ref blew the whistle, which makes it even worse cause the puck was still loose (and in the net).

Yes, congrats to the Germans. Their short program from the previous night wasn't that great but I thought the long program was fantastic.
Also congrats to the NK pair, they were really good. A little childish but I couldn't help but think, wow they looked great and well fed.
Oh, they also showed the German pair waiting for the last pair to finish up. Those 2 were very emotional and I really felt for them.

The Netherlands in disbelief, 'greatest of all-time' Sven Kramer didn't win the 10 km speed skating. Fourth attempt, presumably last chance, 1 silver medal in 2014 but nothing else to show for. It's weird, because he just won his three gold in a row at the 5 km. But here, majority of fans and media wanted two things: Kramer to win the 10 km and any Dutchman to win the men's 1500 meters.

Yes the Germans certainly deserved the gold for that performance. Nice to see her finally get it after 5 Olympics.
Music has gone through a transition of late in skating. Non-vocals music was the only thing allowed until just a few years ago. You could pretty much predict what music was going to be used every year. Swan Lake anyone? So even though Swan Lake got used again, it allowed for that fantastic choice by the french pair who skated to the Disturbed version of Sounds of Silence. It got them noticed on YouTube, and has brought a younger audience to the sport I think.
It was really disappointing to see only one American pair team make the Olympics this year, and finish mid-pack. That part of the sport needs a lot of new blood if we are ever going to get a medal there again. (Yes, I like watching ice skating :) )

No matter how surprising, the iron clad rule is to wait till No 30 before calling it ... And yeah, that run was awesome. Friend of mine who is knowledgeable on this (coaching the speed disciplines at state-level and being an avid Snowboarder as well) said it's absolutely insane to even be World-Circuit level in both sports, much less win in both (won 2 World Championships as a Snowboarder).

Team GB just won their first gold today, Lizzie Yarnold retained her skeleton title.
I didn’t realise the issues she had since Sochi, which included taking a year out to combat severe exhaustion and then subsequently having to overcome severe motion sickness!
All of these people have to overcome tough situations, but I’m guessing motion sickness and skeleton is not a common combination!

I know complaining about NBC coverage is completely pointless at this point, but they are showing the same live feed of ice dancing on both NBC Sports and NBC, while the US hockey game is relegated to CNBC.
How does that make any sense? Trying to drive people to CNBC? I’d have though they are far more at risk of losing viewers who either don’t have access to that channel as part of their package or who don’t realize the game is on after flipping between the two usual channels, but maybe I’m missing something. Last numbers I see (give or take last year), CNBC had about 10m more homes than NBCS. So putting the hockey game there would be a boost, not a demotion.
Plus, a lot more people know CNBC exists/where to find it than know NBCS exists (even during the Olympics). So as long as they've done a good job of promoting that they're using CNBC for Olympic coverage, this was to the benefit of the hockey game.

The Men's hockey tournament is so damn pointless. I wonder if at any point there will be debate of cancling it alltogether (maybe just as a pressure tool), because i can't imagine many other sports being made/stay olympic if the not only a few are missing but essentially some countries are missing like 45 of their best 50 players.
And that's coming from a German who just saw his NT beat Sweden to reach the Semifinals for the first time ever. I mean, it's nice and all but doesn't really feel like an accomplishment when they miss 50 roster players (Germany like half a dozen)

Zero interest in having that season disrupted for something of this sort. (Same holds true with every major sport afaic).

As if you would even notice. Do you pay any attention to the NHL?
I dont care about the NHL unless maybe the Wild make their once a decade playoff run. Team USA vs Team Canada makes for some great hockey. Actually, watching numerous countries against each other make for some great hockey. Its like watching the best in the world against each other where they actually care to win.

Go back to the college kids like it used to be.
The USA college kids against the pros of Russia? I guess it would still be better than whatever this is.

Excuse me?
Finally gave in & joined my early adopter kid in taking the Preds after the Thrashers bailed (#fuckwpg4life), though Vegas is such a great empty cupboard that it's hard for me to not be a fan there as well.
I had a fucking THN subscription delivered to Monticello, GA for cryin' out loud.
My hockey fan roots go back to sneaking a goddamned transistor radio to bed to listen to Jiggs McDonald call a team coached by Boom Boom Geoffrion.
I've seen more pro hockey (NHL + ECHL + SPHL) in person over the last two decades than all other pro sports combined, all in person college sports combined as well.
I dont care about the NHL unless maybe the Wild make their once a decade playoff run.
Kinda makes you asking me that question a bit asinine, now doesn't it?

USA wins!
So, we've beaten Canada in women's hockey and curling in the space of 12 hours.
By subsection 104.c.2.b of the Olympic Code, I think this means we can trade heads of state.

Too late the President has tweeted about it (just the hockey of course) now, so the expiration date on this offer has passed. :)

I watched the replay of the overtime + shootout. I do think the US women deserved to win.
In the overtime period, the US women took many more shots than the Canadians ... it was almost as if the Canadians were tired and just playing defensively.

I watched the whole game. Canada came out with fire and team USA looked a bit nervous.. but as the game went on, team USA settled in and played fantastic the rest of the way. Shootout to end it is dumb though.

Yeah, I'm not well educated in hockey but my preference is keep on playing until sudden death/next score.
Curling replay is on now. Yawn, a little slow for me.

Well it was impossible to not get spoiled about the US Men's curling results this morning, but I watched anyway, and wow that 5-point end was incredible. I wouldn't have given you a dollar on the US chances this year when I saw who their skip was again, and looked like I was right to feel that way early in the tournament, but then everything just seemed to click for them. Well done Team USA!
Now someone needs to wake up US speedskating-no medals in Sochi, just one here.

It's a shootout in the NHL during the regular season and sudden death in the playoffs - should be the same in the medal games imho.
Curling puts me into a deep snore. :D

They're too busy planning the World Cup to care.
There's no way they get both the wc and Olympics in the same 5 year span without some obvious shenanigans.

Curling replay is on now. Yawn, a little slow for me.I get it in soccer where the players literally can't run anymore after 120' minutes due to the limited subs, but in hockey with it's line changes no reason you can't play until a winner.
Also, watching this(/any) OT, if they have 4-man/2-man bobsled, and potentially a 3v3 basketball tournament next Olympics, can we get a 3v3 hockey tournament?
