That's really sad. One of my earliest memories of the NFL was watching Clark haul in that pass from Montana in the NFC Championship. Not live on TV, unfortunately - at least as far as I remember; I was only 3 when it happened. However, I remember watching the video several times as a kid, and my friends and I would try to reenact that play many times in the backyard.

This is my earliest vivid memory. At a family friends house, one of those that you're so close to you call them Aunt and Uncle even though you're not related, with a crowd of about 20 people, all cowboys fans, in utter despair.

Over the past year, Clark made an effort to see old friends and teammates, including a recent group trip to his ranch in Montana (chronicled below). On Monday they grieved while expressing gratitude. “We knew it was the last time we were going to see him,” says Gary Plummer of the trip. “Which makes his monumental effort to wave and smile as we were driving away that much more meaningful.” The following story was originally published on May 2, 2018.

The invite arrived last month via phone, email or, in some cases, text message.

Mr. DeBartolo wants to bring you out to his ranch in Montana to see Dwight. Can you come?

The responses were immediate.

“Wouldn’t miss it,” said Roger Craig.

“I WILL be there,” wrote Russ Francis.

“FAITHFUL THEN, FAITHFUL NOW,” wrote Keena Turner

“It will be an honor to visit with DC,” wrote Carlton Williamson.

And on it went: Ronnie Lott and Harris Barton and Dwight Hicks and Gary Plummer, men who’d played alongside Dwight Clark, the iconic 49ers receiver.
