Gotta love the Cavs - "This is a big day for Cleveland sports."
Really? Really buddy? Your team finished dead last and had to sweat out getting the pick they rightfully deserve for sucking the worst (or best?), and that's a big day?
BTW, is there any reason other than ratings that justifies NOT automatically giving the worst teams the best picks? I've never understood why the NBA does it this way.

Nice deal for the Pistons, they make it to the Conference Finals(I guess they COULD make it to the Finals:)), and they get #2 next year.

I'm pretty sure that this was the first year it was on prime-time, so (at least prior to this season) ratings weren't a concern. I had thought it was to try to stop teams from tanking the season to ensure the top pick, now you could tank and still not get it. Not so sure though.

Actually the most exciting thing for Philadelphians to watch is how we trade away our 1st rounders for garbage (most of the time) or how we draft someone, don't use them, and trade them away for garbage...or we draft someone we'll never use...
Of course, this year is a no brainer since we don't have a draft pick, we have old players, we are almost over the cap, we have a coach that while excellent in coaching pales when it comes to being a GM, and a team that is always so close but never capable of going to the next level...beware the Sixers are going to be really really bad in the next few years...thank god for the Flyers, er...okay, the Phillies, uh...the Eagles...grrrrrr.
Philadelphia, the city with competitive teams never able to make it to the top.

For those of you not watching the Pistons/Nets game.
David Aldridge has reported it's almost a definite the Pistons will take Darko Milic at #2. They worked him out before the game today and were incredibly impressed, as he can play Power Forward it looks.
As a Pistons diehard, I can honestly say.

There was a 7.2 percent chance that Memphis would get the No. 2 pick.

How is this different than any other sport? Is it that 1 guy on a 5-man team makes that much difference? I can see it not being too much of a concern in baseball or hockey, but football fortunes have been won or lost on draft picks and I don't see the NFL holding a lottery.
Anyway, I think the idea is ridiculous, but if you're going to do it, then why not restrict it to the worst 5 or maybe even worst 10. Surely teams that were in the playoff race until the last week of the season are not going to tank. In fact, the way it is now, they do have a reason to tank, because you never know if you'll get that one ping pong ball and pick up the #1 spot. Why make the playoffs as a mediocre 8th seed if you have a shot at a top 3 draft choice to add to your .500 team?

I thought Hockey did something like your suggestion? Where its not set that the worst record gets the #1 pick, but they can't get any worse than the #2 or #3 pick or something like that.

I still say Carmelo would have had more exposure and impact playing for SU than wasting away in obscurity for the Nuggets, which even the locals don't care about - regardless who they bring in. But he gets his millions so nothing else matters.

Provided Cleveland gets Silas over Van Gundy, I say playoffs in 2 years, challangeing for a championship by 4. This team is loaded with talent, they just haven't had a coach capeable of developing it.

The real winners of the draft a couple years from now will prove to be the Pistons and Nuggets. LeBron James, IMO, can do nothing but be overrated. He is so overhyped at this point, it is sickening.

Mello may have had more exposure but it may also have hurt his game. Listening to countless interviews, man players have said that the pro game is so vastly different from the college one that the quicker you can make it there the better, even if its just practicing for a year.
All that aside, I remember a time when the city of Denver DID care about the Denver Nuggets. I remember going to sold out playoff games against the Jazz in the mid 80's. I remember the arena 3/4+ full every game when Moe was the coach.
The team let the city down and the fans reacted as most fans do. Carmello has a chance to do some wonderful things in Denver. He's a class act going to a young team with a lot of cap room. Kroncke has built up winning teams with the Rams and the Avalanche, I see no reason to believe he won't build up a winner in Denver.
I'm happy we got the kid and look forward to visiting Pepsi Center a few times to see him next year.

I think the reason that the NBA does a draft lottery and the NFL does not is that NBA drafts are a lot thinner than NFL drafts.
In the NBA, it's pretty rare to get any big-impact players outside the top-ten. Tanking the season to get the #1 pick would be a great strategy for a team that's re-building, because, like this year, anything outside picks 1-3 is pretty much a total crapshoot.
In the NFL, there's good talent in the first three rounds of the draft, and 22 starting positions to fill (as opposed to 5 on an NBA team).

I think you have the Darko/Wallace thing correct, but I disagree about Robinson. I think he becomes the 6th man next year. Prince will be the starting small forward in Detroit next year. Robinson will be the backup to the top 3 spots on the floor.
If it isn't reflected in the actual starting lineup, it'll be reflected in the number of minutes for each player. I'd expect Prince to have a lot more PT than will Robinson next year.

Troy is right, I don't think there is any way that Robinson will be starting next season, especially after some of the awful play he's shown in the playoffs; he should try moving to get a rebound once in a while.

Bingo.
I'm actually pretty disappointed that the Pistons resigned Cliff. When the playoffs come around, Uncle Cliffy is nowhere to be found. I can only hope that we can trade him sometime in the near future.
I'm also praying that the Pistons don't resign Jon "The Human Turnover" Barry in the offseason. That money would be better spent elsewhere.
