What was the first major movie with a big "twist" as part of the plot?

Psycho comes to mind for me, but was there something earlier?

FWIW, I don't think that Rosebud was a "twist" b/c the whole movie was about trying to figure out what Rosebud meant. But feel free to disagree.

Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from 1920 has a big twist ending.

Planet of the Apes. I'm sure many before that but that was a big one.

Great one. Hard to imagine one earlier than that, and it definitely counts.

It must have been cool to watch movies in the pre-internet days. Like, seeing that in the theater must have been such a mindfuck when you had no way of seeing it coming.

My friends and i stood in line to watch Apes back in the day, there was a lot of buzz around that film.

And yes, we were all blown away by the big reveal at the end because, as you mentioned, none of us had heard anything about it.

Different times indeed.

Sleuth. The original from 1972 with Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier. Not the remake with Jude Law, that one is dire.

Endorsed, great flick. Both of them just kill it.
