The famed indie artist that pioneered the lo-fi movement passed away a couple of days ago at the age of 58. He lived a tormented life, suffering extensive mental issues. The documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a great watch, and shows the demons he had to live with and overcome.

His singing voice kept him from getting widespread mainstream attention, but much like The Velvet Underground, he influenced numerous artists.

I open a one-man show tonight where one of his songs is a prominent moment. Odd timing for sure.

My favorite band, The National, performed Devil Town last night in tribute.

I saw him live a year or two ago in Dallas. It was certainly the most awkward gig I've ever seen but that was expected.

Something about that line, "Don't be sad, I know you will" gets me every time.
