If you had to choose one
(1) You and your children and grandchildren live long happy lives, but disaster strikes, and in 500 years, the human race is extinguished from the universe. When you die peacefully in your sleep in your old age, you have no inkling that humanity will die out.
(2) Humans end up existing for tens of thousands of years with hundreds of billions of people living throughout the solar system and/or galaxy. But you, personally, die tomorrow.

That's an odd one ... but also pretty easy to me.

Yep. I like to think I am not a selfish person, but asking me to give up my one existence for people 500 years from now I didn't even hesitate.

I can't imagine the useless suffering that I might have to endure as humanity dies out, yet I live. That sounds like an awful punishment.

you have no inkling that humanity will die out.
Because of this, I chose to live.

Eh, those future jerks would probably look down on me for being primitive and below their heightened moral enlightenment, so, they had it coming anyway...

500 years? We are talking about people in the 16th century caring about us right?

I'm not suicidal or anything, but I think I'm at peace for when my time comes. If that day's tomorrow, so be it.

For me, it is about time frame. If it was people die out 100 years after I die, I would change my vote. 4-500 years from when I die, I have very little or no connection with them.

I would happily die tomorrow if it means my kids get to live longer, have their own kids, etc...

That kinda puts the thumb on the scale, don't it? In the long run, entropy wins anyway. If I know that I "won't" know about the impending disaster, it makes it easier to choose the long, happy lives.
Because, y'know, entropy's gonna catch up to the human race eventually anyway, so why not?

Humanity is going to die out eventually anyway. That's just nature. Seems silly to die tomorrow for no point.
