I will say that it was interesting for me to go back to the 2016 link & review my voting then, and to discover that the player I lingered longest over last time was the player I lingered over longest this time too.

The HOF vote tracker thing they do every year with the ballots made public has Bonds and Clemens both getting in. And Schilling. I'm not sure if that's typical of the public ballots or if the voters who don't participate lean more heavily against those guys.

Scott Rolen was a great 3B. A leader and a winner. His defense was outstanding and he was a very good hitter.

I was reading an article on the Athletic about the candidates for this year. Pretty decent cases made for Scott Rolen (70.2 WAR) and Bobby Abreu (60). Two guys that did not feel like HoFers to me while they were playing.
I think Rolen’s career overlapping with Chipper Jones and Adrian Beltre (#4 & 6 in all time 3B WAR) overshadows that he is top 10 all time. Plus, there were guys like Chavez, Glaus, and Aramis Ramirez that seemed as good at their peaks.
Abreu has less of a case, but still pretty impressive and similar to or better than guys like Sheffield, Sosa, Vlad, and Ichiro. And way better than a lot of Hall of Famers.
Clemens
Bonds
Jeter
Walker
Manny Ramirez
Rolen
I’d say Schilling is the toughest for me. I originally had Manny on the bubble, too, but if Frank Thomas and Edgar Martinez are in (and Harold Baines!), Manny belongs.
Looking at Schilling’s career trajectory, I barely passed on him because I think there’s a good chance he used PEDs (peaked in his mid-30s and wasn’t exactly a physical specimen). That lands him at the top of the Sosa, Palmiero, McGwire tier and below the Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod tier where they were special enough to be HOFers with or without and had otherworldly stats with it. Plus his winning percentage is sub-60% even though he played on a lot of really good teams (I know it’s an antiquated stat, but when you look at his contemporaries, it really sticks out to me).
Manny probably belongs. If Frank Thomas and Edgar Martinez are HOFers, it’s hard to say he isn’t.

3rd Base, for whatever reason, is just horribly underrepresented in the HoF. Part of it is they just tend to fall off a cliff at age 30, but even guys that are productive into their mid 30s (like Rolen) tend to be overlooked. Hell, go back and look at Beltre's previous HoF threads. There just seems to be a weird bias against the position.

Looking over this: Third Base JAWS Leaders | Baseball-Reference.com (https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_3B.shtml)
Never noticed, but very true.
It is insane that Schmidt wasn’t a 100% on the first ballot when you consider that guys like Boggs, Jones, and Beltre were all still playing or yet to play. In 1995, you would have been comparing him to existing HOFers Eddie Matthews and Brooks Robinson and recently retired George Brett and late career Boggs. He got 96.5%. Old times sportswriters’ egos must have been something to behold.
Also, I feel like I need to mention that I hate the Phillies, despite advocating for Abreu, Rosen, and Schmidt. Don’t want to be misleading. :)

The votes have been tabulated and the 2020 inductee to the FOFC Baseball Hall of Fame is...
Derek Jeter - 100%
Only Larry Walker is missing from the IRL list of inductees.
We had 20 voters, so an even 15 was required for enshrinement. Clemens missed it by 1, Bonds by 2. Walker wasn't even close (hosers).
Derek Jeter 20
Roger Clemens 14
Barry Bonds 13
Larry Walker 10
Curt Schilling 11

The handwringing over Jeter not getting 100% is so silly. Cal Ripken didn't get 100%, Greg Maddux didn't get 100%, nor did maybe 50 other guys for whom an argument cannot be made to not vote for them. So not voting for a "leader" who refused to change positions in favor of a vastly superior defender at SS isn't a crime imho.

I heard on the radio Willie Mays missed being unanimous by 22 votes. This is why people hate Yankee fans.

People think Mariano getting 100% changed the way people vote.
Someone said it last night. It doesn't matter. He got in.
Doesn't matter that Walker made it by 6 votes. He got in.
They should just tell us yes or no and not worry about percentages.
Glad Walker got in. He has a good story.

It's just kind of funny that it was one person who kept him from being unanimous.
Probably someone who omitted the lock so he could vote for 10 other people. Gota make sure Cliff Lee gets a vote.
