It's that time of year again...Flipping through the channels and sure enough-- no Sportscenter for me. Nope, I get to watch this before work...Reminds me of when I was in 5th grade and entered the spelling bee. In the final for the school, my word was "nightengale". I spelled it "Nigtengale" Forgot the h and look where I am now :D Anyway, it's on if anyone is home to check it out...

The Spelling Bee is NOT a sport.

What if you had to run the letters from a stack, onto a board, and could only do it one at a time?

There is no ball/puck in the spelling bell. No sport. :)

So boxing isn't a sport?

Nope. :)

Actually, a radio host here in St. Louis used to really tick racing fans off on his show. His motto: "If it doesn't have a ball (puck), then it's not a sport".

I'm just kidding, I think racing is a sport.. boxing to for that matter.

man 5 hours... riveting stuff... of course i only watched the last 10 minutes. Do they get a bathroom break.

And if they kept asking me for the definition, I'd be like "fuck you and listen the first time."

I think the reason ESPN shows the spelling bee has to do with FCC regulations. Y'know how 2-13 has to show something a minimum of 5 hours'/week of children's/educational programming? I think it's kinda like that for ESPN. They have to set aside a certain block of time for programming to the public benefit.

I'm not so sure about that. I don't know the FCC regulations well at all, but if those rules applied to cable, I think networks like Comedy Central and Speedvision would have to change their programming a bit.

Perhaps ESPN is just doing a "change of pace" thing, or maybe the people up there just think that the National Spelling Bee deserves to be televised. Hey, if they can make a living out of showing Vlade Divac flop around like a tuna or David Wells' fat ass, maybe they feel that these remarkable kids deserve some face time too, whether they're participating in the average American's idea of a "sport" or not.

if the spelling bee wasn't on, I'd go as insane as those kids on there. Kudos to Sai, that boy can spell like there's no tomorrow. Pococurante, what the hell is that?
