Hello all:
I'm heading out of town on my main summer camp with kids today. (If you're interested in details of what we're doing on the trip, look at this thread (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/%7Efof/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9590) and/or look here (http://www.younglifenorthdekalb.com/castaway.htm). To help with the troll patrol, GrantDawg has agreed to accept mod rights this week. Like me, he won't do much of anything except in the cases of obvious trolling and flaming. Give him all the respect you give me. (Now THAT is the kiss of death, huh G-Dawg???? ;))
I shared this in another thread, but thought I'd share it too regarding our trip. Last night around 11pm, I got a phone call from the step-father of one of the girls going on the trip. His voice was breaking up, and he informed me that Vanessa was not going to be able to go on the trip because her mom (who has had cancer), had taken a turn for the worse and had to be rushed to the emergency room. The doctors have said there's little/nothing they can do, and they're not expecting her to live through the week. I asked if I could speak to Vanessa, and he said she wasn't able to talk to anyone yet (I could hear her crying in the background.) This situation just sucks even more, because her father died a few years back as well. This is a heavy load for a 15-year-old girl who just finished her freshman year to handle. Pray for her, should you be so inclined. She's in the orange jacket below.

That is terrible.
Two of my friends have recently had to deal with this kind of personal tragedy. One of my neighbours lost his father (who was only 45) to cancer at the start of May. That was bad enough, but I was told last night that the father of another friend was critically ill with cancer, and is not expected to last the weekend.
Altogether it has been a sucky month.

My prayers are with her. I lost my father four years ago to cancer. We only knew for six weeks. The last day was the longest in my life. They took him to the hospital in the morning. We knew he would die that day, but he held on until early evening.
Those six weeks were some of the most loving days I've ever felt and even uplifting in the face of the adversity we faced. Oddly enough, my dad was the glue that kept us together through the end. I hope the girl's family has a similar experience. It will be sad but with enough faith, it can also be peaceful.

Ugh! The Kiss of Death indeed.
The young lady and her family are in our prayers.

My heart goes out to that young lady. I lost my mom when I was 18 and it was hard enough. To be 15, and having lost her father...I hope everything works out for her, in whatever way it still can.
Very sorry to hear about the girl. I recently lost an uncle and that was hard enough. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose a father and now have a mother sick also.

I'd raise my glass to that.
My father was just the same. He was diagnosed with cancer back in '92 and passed in '97. Five years of chemo, radiation treatments, not to mention the daily dose of insulin for his diabetes. Torturous, indeed. But it was amazing that he lasted five years, without a single complaint. During this time, he witnessed the growth of his children: he was there at my graduation from UC Irvine, two of my sibling's weddings, and the birth and christening of my sister's son. We as a family couldn't have been luckier. Had he lasted a couple of weeks longer, he would've made it to my oldest brother's wedding, and the birth of my sister's second son. But my oldest brother said it perfectly about my dad's absence: "Now he's got the best seat in the house."
My heart goes out to Vanessa and her family. May the last few moments with her mother be filled with warmth and love.

Exactly why I feel bad for shunning Cancer insurance. I think I'll have a looksie at it again.
I'm sad and heartwarmed at the same time for some of you telling things like these. It has to be hard to talk about losing someone you care about, nonetheless your parent.
Prayers go out all over the world tonight.

I know a lot of people that have died to cancer, most close to me was my grandmom. She died of cancer when I was young, but not too young to not remember.

Redux.
GrantDawg has the conn once again, and this time he has full admin/banning rights. I screwed up last year by not activating everything. I'm pretty sure I did this time.
Vanessa is going this year. :)

You suck at moderating this board.
And I am not sure on this last point, maybe our resident lawyers can help, but I believe you are required to post a picture of yourself flexing on your front porch wearing nothing but patriotic underpanties within six hours of assuming leadership. You have four and a half hours left.

I would, but I think there has been a restraining order against me putting a picture of myself naked in digital form (Valarie Bertinelli has good lawyers). :)
