First time playing. Took me to the 6th try to get it. Thought I had it on the 4th guess when the first three turned green, but then grey, grey. But that really narrowed it down for me.

I have been playing hard mode on my own from the beginning. I think not using letters I already know are in the word is a waste of a turn.

well what people do is choose 5 letters they did not use on the first turn and thus getting it on the third turn becomes trivial.

Okay, I think the issue with the grid is using the Quick Reply. For whatever reason, you have to go to the "Reply To Thread" screen. If you use the Quick Reply box, it doesn't work.

Folks at work have a fun addition to hard mode: you have to start each puzzle with the word that was the answer the day before. I tried it today and like the twist.

Low seven figures for the New York Times is not much money. They probably spend that much on advertising per week. They might get their money's worth if all they do is put a link to their other games, on their website, to drive traffic there, which I would think would work better than a week's worth of banner ads and TV/radio commercials.

Just looked it up. In 2020, according to .Statista, NYT spent $135.9 million on advertising. Just slap a link to their other games on there and it's some of best advertising they can do. Of course, do any more than that, and they'll kill the game and throw their money away.

I started playing a new game called Semantle (https://semantle.novalis.org/). You guess words, and the server tells you how close you are to the word based on Word2vec. The closest I've gotten is 26.23 similarity. Definitely takes the day to try different guesses to help narrow in on the word.

From the website:

Guess the secret word

Each guess must be a word (of any length) or short phrase. The game will tell you how semantically similar it thinks your word is to the secret word. Unlike that other word game, it's not about the spelling; it's about the meaning. The similarity value comes from Word2vec. The highest possible similarity is 100 (indicating that the words are identical and you have won).

The "Getting close" indicator tells you how close you are --if your word is one of the 1,000 nearest normal words to the target word, the rank will be given (1000 is the target word itself). If your word is not one of the nearest 1000, you're "cold". (By "normal" words", I mean non-capitalized words that appears in a very large English word list; there are lots of capitalized, misspelled, or obscure words that might be close but that won't get a ranking. Those get marked with "????").

You will need more than six guesses. You will probably need dozens of guesses. There's a new word every day, where a day starts at midnight UTC.

Secret words may be any part of speech, but will always be single words. It's tempting to think only of nouns, since that is how normal semantic word-guessing games work. Don't get caught in the trap! Since our Word2vec data set contains some proper nouns, guesses are case-sensitive. But I removed all but lower-case words from the secret word set, and if your word matches the secret word but for case, you win anyway. So if you want to know if the word is more like nice or Nice, you can ask about both.

Before I jumped into Wordle, I made sure to train myself a bit into refreshing 5-letter words as Wordle feels like an exercise in applying photographic memory. The word that tripped me was clearly one I never heard of or read and still couldn't expect to figure it out after looking up what the nearest translation is, which was something unexplainable in Dutch as well. My last guess already was a bit of an trial and error in what could possibly be the fifth letter in such an awkward combination of letters.

It makes "Semantle" a different kind of challenge. For most solutions the English words lead me to a Dutch word that feels close, but grasping for the direct translation. It's something a lot of Dutch people run into, some words in English have no direct translation in Dutch and vice versa. The end result is that more and more English words find their way in the Dutch language, simply by lack of a comparable alternative.

Close one! After the 4th guess I knew it could be at least 4 words. I entered "paved" to eliminate 3 of them.This is the side effect of going to hard mode or not: You can't make that move in "hard". I think most that switched to hard have ran into a coinflip situation and hoped for the best. Which is why Quordle will eventually become dull too, because the first couple of moves could be used to maximize your letter variation, spending the first 4 words on 20 different letters. That's how I approached Wordle initially.
