View Full Version : Puzzle/musing - "obligatory" rhymes in song lyrics

Okay... not exactly a puzzle, as I'm not sure there's a purely correct answer. But I have an answer in mind, I think it will be hard to beat, so the exercise here is finding your best answer to the setup here... we'll see if my entry remains king of the mountain.
You know it when you hear it. Words used at the end of line in a song (or poem) where there's a rhyme coming, and you more or less know what the follow-up rhyme is going to be in advance.
The lyric "...love you" is sort of on point. But in my view, very close to 100% of the rhymes with this entry will be split across two follow-ups... either "of you" or possibly "above you." So, that's the right general idea, but not the bullseye here.
What we want here are words/phrases that can and do occur in lyrics (or rhyming poetry) that, when placed in a spot where they require a rhyme, are universally matched together. The hither and yon of song lyrics, perhaps.
So...what pair of words, or possibly short phrases, are inextricably linked in rhyming, where it's basically a mortal lock that B will follow A, and A will follow B?

FWIW, my TBA entry benefits not only from being slightly complex in pronunciation, but also from a reasonable link in the substance/connotation of the two as well. Makes it super easy to connect them without veering way out of context to do so. I think they are probably 100% in this scoring.

“Start” and “heart” jumps to mind.

Ooh, I will have to think about this one for a while (or just pay attention to lyrics while listening).
See/me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-48Za7VZR_c) seems like a possibility, but "be" could also get thrown in there as a wrench.

I'll volunteer that the quantity versus exclusivity debate will come into play here.
There might only be one time that Messerschmidt and battleship were forced into a rhyming couplet, so they might score as a perfect 1/1 here. That seems weaker than, say, "heart" and "start" even if they only get a 82% out of 460,000 uses because of your occasional "apart" or whatnot... right?

Does the lyric have to be reasonably common?
There's probably instances where A follows B 100% of the time, but A and B pretty much never occur (here I am thinking of some Wu Tang Clan lyrics).

So "trouble" and "double" make a strong pairing... including some pretty noteworthy uses
I reckon there is the occasional appearance of "bubble" or "rubble" or whatever that keeps it from being sterling, but... that would score pretty highly I'd think
...this popped up for me soon after I had posted the puzzle thread, as I looked at a player in a FOF league named McFerrin, btw

In hip-hop, the word "trigger" is universally followed by a line ending in a well-known pejorative term.

This, imo, doesn't fit. The words "college" and "knowledge" aren't uncommon, but the rhyme is unique:
conscious/college (Kanye West, All Fall Down)
college/mileage (Kevin Gates, Really Really)
college/tropics (TI, Whatever You Like)
college/homage (Young Jeezy, Go Crazy)
college/dollars (Jay-Z, Bring It On)
Scottish/college(Ice Cube, Behind Gates)
to name a few.
Now, I'm not saying any of these are particularly good or inspired, nor are they as famous as your example, but unless you have a *very* limited access to hip-hop, *usually* absolutely does not apply.
