I am really hoping so also. Early voting looks good for Dems, but I just have this sense of foreboding.
I do think the polls could really be off. There is no way women under the age of 27 are accurately represented. They don't have land lines and aren't answering for unknows numbers on the cells. The key is are these women motivated?

I'll just go with what I posted in one of the other threads:
Remember, for like a few minutes, when we could pretend that overturning Roe v Wade might lead to a tiny, close victory in one midterm that might be tenuously be held until the next Presidential election, assuming the Supreme Court somehow doesn't agree with the independent state legislature theory by the narrowest of margins? We almost could pretend that trading reproductive rights might give us 3 more years of normalcy until the next would be despot comes along and breaks our democracy for at least a generation.

1) Split - Dems keep S, GOP takes H
2) Red Wave - GOP takes both.
3) Blue Wave - Dems take both.

Just came back from early voting in the deep blue Chicago suburbs (roughly 2:00 PM, so not lunchtime) and it's easily the busiest I've seen it for early voting. Like, by an order of magnitude.
Won't change anything locally, because all of the races were really contested in the Democratic primaries, but I guess that makes it more noteworthy?

+4 is a no-miss wave - everything close cuts their way. Beyond that requires Patty Murray or Michael Bennet, and I think even the least realistic on the red side aren't really going there. Though, these days, if you want to get on television, you have to be out there.
0 or even -1 isn't that hard to fathom. And even -2 would only require someone who has very little middle-road cred, like J.D. Vance or Ron Johnson, falling short. My sense, being in Ohio, is that Vance is pretty safe. But not like Patty Murray safe.
I think I'll end up at +1 or +2 for the Republicans, but we know Georgia's going to Georgia and decide it in December. At which point, who knows, Trump could throw another fit and piss Georgia off all over again. I see 0 as a lot more likely than +4.
Congress, though. That's not going to be very close.

It surprised pollsters - there have been very few in the state, and only one (Trafalgar) has shown a Zeldin lead, and that was less than 1%. Still, 538 has Hochul at 97% and PredictIt is pricing Hochul shares at 80 cents. It might be hard to call it right off the bat tomorrow, but I'd be surprised if it ended up being all that close.
It looks like a typical mid-term for a president in recession.

I'm actually leaning more towards it not being as bad for Democrats as people are expecting. Still Republican gains but not as much as the doom and gloom approach. I think the only reason they're going to get much of anything is inflation. There's too much else that has gone against them, and Biden's approval is 4-5 points higher than it was in July.
I could be completely wrong, but the info I've seen - caveat about polling being our best indicator but not as reliable as it once was - doesn't show a massive red wave.

As an example, proposal 3 in Michigan aims to undo Dobbs in the state and go beyond that, enshrining in the state constitution a right to abortion. The latest poll I know of is 55-41 in favor though the gap is closing, and it's going to drive turnout here IMO based on the fact that roughly 80% of the political activity I see is mocking the anti-proposal 3 crowd. It's a much bigger issue than the governor's race, at least where I live.
Not that there will be traction about this kind of thing everywhere in the country, I know there won't be. And other than '16, Michigan being blue doesn't surprise anyone. But there's still a lot of people around here who don't like Gov. Whitmer because of the covid response, the whole 'this mask is as useless as my governor' stuff, etc. They are all getting drowned out right now.

Looks like 538 is trending the other way heading into the election though. You're not often going to be right betting against them :( Final forecast is 84% chance of republicans taking the house, 59% taking the Senate, but governorships not really moving the needle with the same overall split each way, a couple flipping in each direction.
Of course the worst part of it I think is how many Big Lie proponents are favored to win.

The reality is, people are desensitized to the extreme/violent rhetoric (they've been living it on social media, so its extension to politics is, sadly, nothing shocking) and apparently don't believe anything will really happen to our country despite evidence something serious is brewing. So, those who aren't Trump/GOP fanboys are treating this like a normal election and voting with their pocketbooks. Issues like abortion don't move the needle because most people don't think they'll ever be affected by it, or are ambivalent, or actually agree even if it's not a top issue for them.
It's infuriating to see seemingly normal people interviewed on the news and discussing candidates either on their merits or just laundry listing "fate of democracy" as one of the issues along with "grocery bill." I get it, I'm fortunately in a situation where I can absorb the extra costs, but I get the feeling these people would flip if they really thought their lives would change for the worse with an authoritarian in charge. But it seems like the prevailing thought is, "This is America, we may have our issues but we're not like other countries and that kind of stuff doesn't happen here." I've even talked to someone who used J6 as proof that we will never face a situation in which the worst-case scenario comes true.

It's also a little bit of a hard sell to tell people "they're setting up to steal 2024" - there's like a lack of urgency there. Joe Biden is President - they can't do anything about that so "we can deal with that in 2024 if it materializes". Like it's something minor to check off the grocery list. Or something that you can stop once we're already so many steps down the road. I mean, there's a decent case that the die was already cast in 2016 Trump's Supreme Court choices and Moore vs Harper - and there's nothing to stop it now.
Don't worry, if it does happen, a ton of people will just go along with it with justifications like "this was legally done", not because it was legal but because people in power did it and they seem immune from real consequences and little more than abstract criticism. And as they watch their lives get worse in ways ranging from rights to economy, it's ok because those other people, the ones who were supposed to get hurt, they got hurt more.

I can't handle five minutes of "news" coverage on either side. They have decided, if the "other side" wins, it means an end to democracy and civil war and all varieties of Armageddon.
We are stronger than that. Just don't listen to those people. They get ratings by scaring us, pissing us off. If you feel we need a national law supporting abortion rights, get out there and vote for legislators who support abortion rights. It should have happened decades ago, but it never did.
You know what a bad day for democracy was? The day John Kennedy was killed. And democracy survived just fine.
Yes, it's going to be a bad day for Democrats. That's normal for midterms in a poor economy. It has happened before and it will happen again. Take the L and spend the next two years working on the economy. Stop gaslighting that high inflation isn't terrible or doesn't exist - we've been told all our lives we need to plan for retirement and inflation spoils those plans.

I'm one of those people. Not because the other side winning is bad for democracy. In a vacuum, it's not. When the other side is on record as being against democracy, as not being willing to accept the outcome of elections, as promoting the Big Lie - not just as a party in certain elements, but hundreds of specific state-level candidates expected to win today - then the other side winning is a defeat for democracy. Effectively what is happening then is people willingly vote to not have their vote count in the future.
If you feel we need a national law supporting abortion rights, get out there and vote for legislators who support abortion rights. It should have happened decades ago, but it never did.
100% this though. These issues can absolutely be resolved by enough people caring about them, which includes accepting imperfect candidates on other issues to get them done.
I just voted myself. Anecdotally, fewer people there than usual. Could just be the time I went, I'm not consistent with that. One person at a 'Dixon for Governor' table outside which I haven't seen at this location before. They were completely behaving themselves though, not approaching prospective voters, staying the requisite distance from the building, etc. I'm in an area where Trump hats are fairly common, so I expect this precinct will definitely go heavy to Dixon.

When the best hope we have for just normal "gridlock" if the GOP takes Congress is people like McConnell and McCarthy tamping down on the performative BS, I don't have much hope. I think it's a near certainty they impeach one or more Biden administration officials, including Biden, make Fauci spend most of his retirement attending Covid hearings, getting referred for criminal charges, etc., and establishing a slew of investigative committees that will undo most of the factual narratives that have been established on J6, Covid, antifa, etc.
And then there will be your "both sides" argument for 2024 - with "EVIDENCE!"

They can impeach all they want but won't have the votes to convict. The January 6th hearings showed how much Congress has the power to shift public opinion in that way; they had no impact whatsoever. People have other sources now. Congress can't compete with social media.
I'm more concerned with 2024 and afterwards. Even if the doom-and-gloom 'slow moving coup' scenario doesn't pan out, you can't elect this many conspiracy theorists attacking the foundation of transferring power and not have ugly consequences at some point.

If the Republicans want to waste their time impeaching Biden, it's a missed opportunity to reach out to the people who didn't vote for them in 2020, but are very unhappy about the economy.
An impeachment hearing that has 0% chance of resulting in removal isn't going to do a damned thing about inflation.

They don't need to reach voters who did not vote for them in 2020. Most of them believe they don't exist because "election fraud" (or at least that is what they want their voters to believe). They care about suppressing the other side just enough and giving their base just enough red meat to turnout. Fixing inflation and the stock market and immigration is hard and fairly out of their control. Impeaching the dems and fighting non-existent fraud is easy and will get the same results.

I primarily depend on the words and actions of the party and its members as to what they are going to do and care most about. Yes, inflation is likely going to get the GOP elected along with a bunch of culture war BS, but it's not because they have a plan to solve it, it's because people who vote with their bank accounts and 401Ks are going to hold the party in charge responsible. As they almost always do.
Impeaching Biden, Fauci, Garland, etc., has a tangible benefit for the GOP going forward. They need to keep the hardcore base energized and extreme partisanship is the way to do it. It's no different than, as the minority, never attempting to offer or pass serious legislation but offering up performative BS bills and making non-sequitur speeches during serious debates so that Fox News and their own Twitter accounts have soundbites to play while ignoring other issues.
If you want to call any news source partisan for highlighting what the party or certain people are actually saying and doing, I guess that's cool. It's not exactly a secret that journalism, by its very nature, is progressive-leaning. In fact, that's kinda the point of a free press. So I'm not very persuaded by people who think this is some new idea that I've never given thought to before. I try my best to go in with open eyes and recognize spin when I see it. Hell, I still consider myself a moderate conservative, so some of it rings true to me, even to this day. But I can't ignore what the GOP is telling me they are about. That's partisan by definition, but that's not because of the reporting. It's from them!
What do you consider a non-partisan news source? I'm honestly curious, because I'm always looking for new sources of semi-balanced news.

I have a master's degree in journalism, and when I started out in the field, I didn't give this much thought. It's a progressive-leaning world, and you're trying to fit in.
When I had the role of editor, I was more aware that the bigger role the press plays is in deciding what to cover and what not to cover.
You're right, that the nature of the press makes partisanship easy. That doesn't mean the press doesn't have a responsibility to fight partisanship whenever possible. These days, the mainstream press does not even acknowledge that fight. "Fair and balanced" is a rather poor joke.
I'm struggling in finding sources. I look at some pieces on Substack. I really like Bari Weiss lately, because she goes out there and tries to find those sources. But no one's perfect. The key is to keep on trying, I guess. Or try and relax and spend less time reading stuff that's designed to raise your blood pressure.

FWIW I empathize with this. I've often been accused of both-sidesism even when it's not what I'm actually doing, to the point where I don't post on certain issues anymore. I agree with you that there's a lot more going on than most media reports.
Where I think I differ is on the issue significance. I'm always open to being persuaded otherwhise, but I don't see how any other issue can be as important as election results denying. The issues I've voted on most of my life, I can't vote on any more - because either everyone has an equal voice in the government or they don't. I mean, I'm not even in favor of universal voting rights as a theoretical matter. But if you're saying other issues matter more than the foundational point of actually counting all the votes ... IMO that's like saying 'this airplane needs better seats' when somebody just ripped off the wings and drained the fuel tank. Without respect for the process of electing people and acceptance of the results, none of the rest of it even has a chance to be relevant.

There are many other examples. Each side feels the same way - the votes should be counted. But how is that done fairly, so that both sides accept the results? Lately, one side usually complains about ballot harvesting and the other side about voter suppression.
If your feelings about both of these potential issues is determined by the laundry you wear, I don't know how to respond.
For me, the only thing that matters is that every single person who has the right to vote has the opportunity to cast that vote and have it counted once and only once. And I think both sides would be happy to overlook shenanigans if they felt it would give them some temporary advantage.

I know that "both sides" stuff works on imbeciles on Facebook, but you can't honestly believe that both sides are treating elections the same way. One side has made it their entire platform to stand against voting, they stormed the Capitol and committed numerous felonies trying to overturn the election. Almost every Republican who loses today will claim it was stolen.

Nope. Hillary conceded the day after the election. Trump never did. Jan. 6th happened because of Trump. Trump tried to get people to overturn the results, he filed frivolous lawsuits that were all thrown out. Hillary did none of those things. What she said in that link was irresponsible. But a common question to candidates is 'will you accept the results of the election' or something similar.
Those in one party say yes far more often than those in another party. This is a matter of public record. This isn't about 'laundry'. I was a Republican most of my life, but I won't consider voting for any candidate who won't simply say 'yes' without qualification when asked that question, I don't care what the letter in front of their name is. It's not even a question that should need to be asked.

As with Stacy Abrams, these were certainly a poor choice of words and the wrong type of thing to say. With Abrams, it appeared to be from the perspective of race, which is understandable but still irresponsible. But that's as far as it went. Lashing out over shock of losing what should have been an unlosable race (Clinton) or attributing a loss to a history or racism (Abrams). I don't believe either of them even filed a single lawsuit. Both conceded fairly quickly.
You can call this "both sides" but you cannot argue the degree to which Republicans have taken this concept and, in continuing action and words, are attempting to set on fire the legitimacy of every election that does not end with them winning. They do it before the election even happens! Hell, Trump is still arguing that in 2016, A RACE HE WON, that he actually won by millions more votes because California allowed millions of illegals to vote Democrat.
The "both sides" are not equal - not even close. This is what is so frustrating to many of us. You're boiling down extremist words and actions as if you're debating free market health care and single payer system - both sides have a position.

As I said, I expected this reaction. Abrams never conceded, by the way, she made a declaration that Kemp would be certified as winner, but has never acknowledged it was legitimate. Clinton may have conceded, but her "poor choice of words" has been a consistent theme for years.
There have been numerous lawsuits, even active ones, from the Democratic side (Fetterman just filed one today). I'm not trying to say both sides are equal, just that both sides will use the courts, use the court of public opinion, violence, threats of violence, anything at all, to win.
You can, as I expect to read here, frame Hillary's behavior in as friendly terms as you like. Some can deny Antifa exists (I guess it doesn't have official ID cards, but it has been around since at least the WTO violence in Seattle) or that the guy who threw a can of some sort at Ted Cruz yesterday was simply aiming for a recycling bin. Whatever. This is all a function of a media that caters to the specific biases of its audience. It's not equal as in every tit has a tat, it's equal in the sense that both sides really suck, and cheat, and contribute to inflation and probably the decline of western civilization.
We should be better than that. We're not.

I brought up Antifa as an example of something the GOP is going to waste their time with Congressional hearings on - as in, trying to build a public record that J6 was Antifa and not Trump supporters. Is this something you believe/support?
Stacy Abrams should have conceded - but guess what, she conceded in fact by her words and actions since. You're telling me she's the functional equivalent to Trump's election denial? I missed the riots at the GA capitol when Kemp was sworn in, damn national news media. I can't stand Hilary Clinton - what am I "framing?" The facts tell the story. There's Dem "election denying" and then there's what the GOP has done and is continuing to do years later - and will do, in multiple places, after tonight (depending on how well or poorly tonight goes for them).
I'm fine with pointing out "both sides" but it's an ineffective argument when the circumstances of each can't be remotely compared.

Even Dems acknowledge that the GOP had every right to use the courts to lodge legitimate challenges to election results. But none of their lawsuits after 2020 were legitimate. Not a single one.

There have been numerous lawsuits, even active ones, from the Democratic side (Fetterman just filed one today).
Also, let's compare what the typical lawsuit is about - Dems largely are looking to ensure votes are counted, Rs are trying to invalidate ballots. My opinion - the law (whatever it is) should apply, and if that means something like a wrong date on a ballot received on or before election day is still valid, then count the vote. You're going to get no sympathy from me with the argument that elections should be decided by the fewest technically valid ballots possible. If counting a ballot affects security/integrity, then throw it out.
Maybe Fetterman's lawsuit has no merit, I don't know. If not, he shouldn't have filed/joined it. But he's fighting to allow people's votes to count, which is not what Rs lawsuits are largely about.

And again, she conceded the day after and did not do one thing to attempt to affect the transition of power. Bitching to friends or on The View about sour grapes losing is not the same as what Trump (and way too much of the GOP) did and continues to do. I don't care if she shows up on this board in this thread right now and says she thinks Trump is illegitimate, it doesn't matter because she settled the matter of who was the next president by her actions (or lack of other actions).

Hey, guess what? I was a registered R from 1989 until 2021. I'm now registered as an independent. I stopped voting GOP for President around 2004 by voting Libertarian, and didn't vote for a single Dem for national office until 2018.
If the GOP came back to its senses, or a legit third party sprung up out of this mess, I'd likely only vote Dem on a case-by-case basis because I'd feel like I have other, better options. Right now, Dem is the only option and I don't even see a reason to care about the normal issues you would typically vote on, because these are not normal times.
I think the issue is, we're in the process redefining what a conservative is. There's really no room for a social moderate, fiscal conservative in today's GOP. Aside from "lower taxes for me = good," on economic issues, the GOP does not care about spending or the deficit or most of anything that used to define us.

No no no! I'm not asking you to defend Trump. There is no defending him. However, it's important to point out that it's not just him anymore, so this isn't totally about Trump which is why I'm so adamant about voting Dem this time around. I'm asking you to explain how you can compare what he/they have done with some of the examples you have pointed out above.
I'm not excusing what Hillary said. I think in the first post I made about her and Abrams, I said neither of them should have said what they said. But the facts are the facts - she conceded and made no effort to challenge the election, regardless of what she said, how many times she said it (I certainly don't remember her calling press conference after press conference or going on a Twitter storm claiming she was the winner), or if she's still saying it. There's just no comparison.
But yes, I agree on the basic point that a major party candidate for national office should not be loosely throwing around those types of claims. After that, the paths diverge widely on what they said/did.

KY rejected an amendment that would have affirmed no right to abortion in the state constitution. There will be a state supreme court hearing in a week to decide how to handle lawsuits against the current law outlawing abortion and they've said the people's voice will weigh in their decision. Depends on the state. Florida ignored their Supreme Court and just made up the laws themselves so they got a few seats from that.
It'll likely be a 3-4% Democrat win in total vote but a slight majority for Republicans. It's the state house races which are really bad. Wisconsin will have a Republican supermajority but basically split the vote 50/50. Kind of tough to call that state much of a democracy anymore.

The weakest part of the (alleged) GOP in Georgia is women in the non-inner city 5-county core around Atlanta, farther away from Atlanta into the suburbs/exurbs you go the more they vote like the rest of the party membership.

Oh, I think he gets a little bit worse every day. Since he can't say all 30-40 races that the Republicans probably could have won if not for his antics (endorsing crazier candidates, behaving like a me-first jerk during all those "rallies") were all "stolen", he's going to lose a few marbles while the party starts whispering that maybe there's finally some light out there away from his shadow.
There's one thing Trump hates more than losing. It's not being important, not being the king-maker.
The problem is that the primaries still reward that behavior. He could end up pulling a Mondale in 2024 the way he's going.

No, wasn't thinking about more negatives against Trump. And if more did come up, who cares ... we all know it won't make a real difference to his 38-42%.
I see DeSantis as being a viable alternative to Trump for many Republicans (and Independents). He is the only contender that I see (right now) who wants & has a reason to challenge Trump, and has strong enough of an important base (e.g. State of FL).
So the battle between them will inevitably weaken Trump and that is good. It will be good to have a relatively normal GOP candidate.

It's actually a faster run-off than they had last time.
I'm glad they vut the time down. I still wish we did away with the run-off system and went to ranked-choice.

According to CNN, only 67% counted so far in Arizona. I think way still too early to call.
But yeah, it looks like it may come down to a (questionable) wife abuser vs (I did it, but I was sick then) wife/woman abuser.

It looks like Kelly will likely win AZ (but the count will take several more days) and Johnson will likely win WI (small, but unlikely chance that outstanding Milwaukee and mail ins could push Barnes ahead). That would leave NV and GA as options for the Dems to get to 50 (and 51). NV is going to take days and seems like a true toss up. Alaska will go for one of the two GOPers, but won’t be called for another week or two because it is close and they have ranked choice.

Yes. But that ad of his wife crying is compelling.
I've read the Politifact stuff. I would have liked to read more interviews/research on wife to determine if she was really weirded out (or bought off).
EDIT: this is pretty much the video https://twitter.com/34n22pac/status/1579799911549526017?lang=en
There is definitely, by far, more smoke from the Walker camp. But this ad is troubling. I've not seen any additional research (from either side) doing more confirming or denying, or on her credibility or lack of.

You have to think a run off favors Warnock. This election has shown the stink of Trump is a negative. He likely won't be able to help himself from getting involved and announcing a presidential run, which will turn this race into a referendum on Trump. Also a month more for Walker to show how stupid he is to Georgia voters. You also have to think there was a least a portion of Kemp voters who ticked off Walkers name and those people will stay home thins time.

I agree that a run-off would favor Warnock vs Walker/Trump.
I'm not sure that holds true if it was a Walker supported by Kemp. I think Kemp has publicly said he supports Walker but my guess (and hope) that he really doesn't. But a 51 GOP majority may be very compelling to him.

I dont think it was about support, more about Kemp voters being in the booth and just ticking off a republican straight ticket. I suspect some of those people stay home because they may have been voting to support Kemp, or an anti Abrams vote, but don't necessarily support Walker.

After J6 and the GOP's refusal to break with Trump, this should have been a D+15 election.
But considering the historical backlash against the President's party in the mid-terms and the fact that the mainstream news has been nothing but people staring at the camera saying "inflation, inflation, inflation, inflation" over and over again while scary music plays in the background, this is a pretty good result for Dems overall.

I think you are underestimating the number of Republican leaning people who didn't vote for Walker last night, but will in a runoff with Senate control in the balance. Some people thought they didn't need to vote for Walker with a "Red Wave" coming, but now will to to keep the Dems from controlling the Senate. I really don't think a runoff is a shoe-in at all.

Plus the hijinks that will go on with the Senate on the line and this being the only game in town… I’d be far more pessimistic about Warnock’s chances in a runoff personally. There’s plenty of reasons to see more R’s backing Walker, I can’t see the enthusiasm gap for D’s being close to the same.

A few weeks ago Walker was polling 5-10 points behind and has been nothing but terrible. People don't care about him lying about how many kids he has, how many abortions he's paid for, who he has beaten. I mean, if he can still get 49% of the vote being a wife beating, baby making, low IQ idiot, why can't he win the runoff. It's really a sad state.

I think it is pretty hard to predict how a GA runoff may play out. The two big variables that I see is that there won't be Kemp or Abrams at the top of the ticket (who does that help/hurt more?) and what kind of effect does Trump declaring his candidacy for 2024 have on the race? Apparently, Trump had to be talked out of announcing last week (was told that the announcement would be overshadowed by the elections).
With Trump potentially facing charges, probably wanting to change the 'loser' narrative, and wanting to get out ahead of Desantis (who, I assume will not announce anything for awhile and will just enjoy his recent successes), I can't imagine that he doesn't declare before the runoff. That could energize either side.

A few notes that I just read.
Walker underperformed the other Republicans that ran in statewide elections and was one of just 2 of the 9 finished/will finish under 2-million votes. There was a IND Libertarian that currently has 2.1% but, per his wikipedia, he is a former democrat and this is his entry at the top:
He is anti-police and openly gay.[2][3][4] He said he supports "ending cash bail," "closing most overseas bases," and "open borders." He has argued that he's "more progressive on criminal justice" than Vice President Kamala Harris, described defense spending as "corporate welfare with explosions that kill innocent people," and said he wants "free and easy immigration."
So, I doubt he was pulling a whole lot of conservatives. Maybe those voters don't turn out for a runoff, but the ones that do seem like they would be more liberal on the spectrum.

I suspect there's enough voters in Georgia that when you're choice is between two black men instead of championing a white man to put a black woman in her place, you might as well just stay in your racist and/or sexist home and watch some more Fox News.

We don't agree on much politically but I generally agree with you here. I do think Warnock has good odds to win in a run-off, but it will be close (e.g. 51-49).
I'm guessing the Libertarians will be more inclined to vote Democrat. I'm thinking the younger generation will really come out if control of the Senate is on the line. (I've been watching CNN this morning and reading online, I still haven't seen anything on % voted. I wouldn't be surprised if the younger vote was lower on 11/8 and hence more of an upside for the run-off)
FWIW, GA GOP has shown they do not follow Trump blindly. That's some comfort.

The Senate might not be on the line if Dems win NV and AZ.
Plus, Warnock and the Dems have now proven they can win a runoff in GA, even when the Senate is on the line.

In a local story, Lina Hidalgo was just declared the winner over Alex Mealer for Harris County judge by a narrow margin. Why this matters? The GOP dumped nearly $9M into this race in the last 6 months compared to $3M for the Dems. Because of the structure of counties in state government in Texas, the county judge has a ton of power with regards to how things are run in the county so she's been instrumental in keeping in place mask mandates and allowing open voting across the county (which is where Houston is and has almost 5 million people), unlike much of the state. In short, these are the type of races that can make little blue enclaves in red states (or vice versa) and the GOP targeted it hard, only to come up just short.
