I am generally unathletic and have below average hand-eye coordination.

I am looking for things to do to keep in shape.

My friend invited me to play pickleball with him.

I am reluctant because I don't like embarrassing myself trying to play sports.

But from what I can see, this does appear to be a sport for people who aren't good at sports.

So, has anyone here tried it? Anyone play? It is really something that someone like me could play to the level of enjoying it and not being embarrassed?

I've been playing for years now. Before that, I played tennis on a regular basis. But I am quite certain it's something you can pick up and play and enjoy. I have seen ALL types of people, young & old, with varying levels of athleticism get out and play. My experience is that the pb community is very welcoming of new players. And I typically find that until you get to a 3.5 level, there is little to no pressure/concern/worry about results.

My recommendation is to definitely get out there and play!

As long as you're playing with other beginners you should be fine.

My FIL loves it and got me a set for Xmas so I can learn.

Funny you post this today. My work out buddy went on a date yesterday and they played pickleball. She had never played and loved it. Called me this morning and said we need to work it into our routine.

People seem to really get into it. I looked but there isn't any really great options around here.

OK.

Just got home. Ridiculously fun and I don't think you need to be really athletic to do it. Me and a friend went and basically got adopted by this older couple who showed us the rules and let us play with their group. At the risk of sounding arrogant I have always been gifted athletically and picked it up fast to where I was pretty competitive. My friend did really well also. It is very social and all the people were very nice and patient explaining the rules, which were pretty easy once you played through a full game.

Can't wait to go back.

Be careful, they might want to hustle you out of your Mic Ultra.
