View Full Version : Thoughts on taking a gift from a horrible person/company

Getting thoughts from the commentariat.
So basically, I won a legit 5 Star resort stay trip to the Caribbean. All flights, food, stay and excursions paid for. Generally if I enter to win something, I don't really check to see if a company is a piece of shit. Well, as I looked for the entry post to confirm it was legit, I saw the company is excruciatingly terrible. Think RFK, Jr. levels of misinformation posts multiple times a day.
My question is, would you move forward with accepting the prize?
There's no requirement that I actively promote the company's mission, nor do I use social media where I'd actually do so. The trip itself is completely unrelated to the company, they're just funding it.
On the one hand, I understand how if could be seen as hypocritical. On the other hand, fuck these people, let them pay me to have a relaxing vacation and actually grift from these fuckers for once.

As long as you don't have to promote/have your name or likeliness used I would go for it just double check the fine print and rules to make sure there is no obligation on your part.t

I agree with this. If Trump sent a 2k tariff check I'm not going to rip it up and throw it away.

Agree with this. They are going to spend the money on someone regardless. It's like all these dumbasses who burn Nikes after they already bought them.

If this was a shitty company as you say, I'd be concerned with how "legit" this trip is.

I think I'd need more context to know how to answer. Why is this horrible company funding the trip? What are they getting out of it? And how did you come to receive it?
Without knowing those things to sway me, I sort of see both sides. On the one hand it's just taking something that someone else will take and you theoretically aren't encouraging or promoting the horrible company. On the other hand, is this the moral equivalent to buying stolen goods? "Whoever they hurt has already been hurt, I can't undo that. Someone is going to profit from the misfortune regardless, so why not me?".
Not an easy choice.

I accept gifts from my wife so you're good (if it isn't a scam).

That's what I'm thinking. If it's a true free gift with no strings attached, take it.

It's really a matter of what you can/can't live with.
If it's a straight up contest win kinda thing, that feels different than a "win" that comes with all sorts of strings attached.
Given how ... conglomerated ... life is these days, it's a full-time job just to sort out what entity you don't approve of owns what. Tough to be perfect.
There's certainly a validity to thinking of something like this as being "boy, did they ever give this to the wrong person, they'll get zero benefit from it, not even good will, the joke's on them". There's also a validity to "I won't enjoy it because I'm going to be bothered so much about the source".
Situational afaic.

I'm only concerned if I have to give something to Elon. As long as I'm getting a free trip with no obligations on my part, I'm all in.

It feels icky dealing with them but I'm obviously leaning towards moving forward. To give a better idea, the founder is some nepobaby who also started an anti-vax dating website, invests heavily in far right Canadian politics and it appears the company had a prior partnership with a former MMA fighter turned sex trafficker.
But whatever theyre selling it appears plenty of idiots are buying, so I may as well profit from it some. And the resort is completely unaffiliated and is a normal resort, so at least I won't be hassled while there.
