They all chuckle like they think they tied and will go again the next day, and then Alex lowers the boom and there's silence.

It's especially dumb because even if one of the other players was wagering cautiously, they'd leave themselves with $12,001.

cuervo72 01-19-2016 06:53 PM

Oh, the one in the middle is the one who was a champ but had to leave for a bit for a job, right? To go from 2 champs to 0 champs would be kinda fitting in a way.

(I am still behind by like, 20 shows.)

britrock88 01-20-2016 02:11 PM

The co-leaders played (and lost) their prisoner's dilemma. The real problem is that 3rd place bet it all. ANY other bet would have done the trick.

murrayyyyy 12-11-2016 08:25 AM

I don't watch the show but that gotta be kinda of weird going in knowing she has passed away.

‘Jeopardy!’ contestant dies of cancer before show airs

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES — A woman who competed on “Jeopardy!” while battling terminal colon cancer has died the week before her episode was set to air but prize money has gone to cancer research as she wished.

“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek says in a statement that Cindy Stowell died Monday.

The quiz show says on its website that the Austin, Texas, woman was invited to an audition for the show in August. Before the audition, Stowell reached out to a producer to ask how long it might be before she taped her episode because she didn’t have long to live. She said she would like to donate any winnings from the show to cancer research.

Stowell passed the audition and was booked for the earliest possible taping Aug. 31.

Her appearance is scheduled to air at 7 p.m. Tuesday

Very sad. The current champ is both very good and very lucky. He's escaped twice when both other contestants missed the final question. He's also had a couple of routes.

That was the most surreal thing I've ever seen on Jeopardy (yes, I was watching it live). Has there ever been a category on the show where not only did no one get any question right, but no one actually buzzed in at all?

Hmmm. Probably one of the coolest gigs in entertainment. They will have their pick of very qualified candidates.

Ken Jennings is an obvious choice. And I love LeVar.

Oprah? Probably too much of a step down for her. Aisha Tyler? She's got experience hosting a game show and has a really approachable style.

Jon Stewart? I think he could tone it down and be understated enough for the role.

I'll be interested to see how they format it (I think the key is to allow all players on each team to buzz in and keep the fast pace), but yeah I'll probably watch.

You don't beat stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I learned this several months ago.

1% 5-year survival rate.

And I have to imagine it's a lot lower when you're 78.

He can't beat it, but hopefully he can fight it for a while.

Kodos 03-07-2019 07:34 AM

Alex has always annoyed me with his "I know all the answers" persona, but I hope he beats the odds here.

Edward64 03-08-2019 11:21 PM

After all these years and $ spent, I am surprised we haven't beaten any type of cancer (or have we?). We haven't cured AIDS but we have effective treatment for it now. Just doesn't seem as if we've moved the dial much.

Pretty disappointing.

JPhillips 03-09-2019 07:29 AM

Not true at all. Survival rates for many different cancers are much higher than two decades ago and compared to the mid-twentieth century, it has been a scientific miracle.

I doubt there's a cure for cancer ala video games ever, but that doesn't mean we aren't getting better treatments and a better understanding of how to lower the risks of getting cancers in the first place.

QuikSand 04-10-2019 07:35 AM

This guy is a very good player, who has the nerve to make very aggressive bets on DDs. Alex joked with him after his first win, saying he wished the game had not been a runaway, as he may have threatened the one-day winning record.

Then, in the ep aired last night...

JPhillips 04-10-2019 07:47 AM

The other two players look so miserable.

murrayyyyy 04-10-2019 11:29 AM

Damn local Las Vegas gamblers.

I think the funniest part is he made his bet a strange number because his goal was to win 110,914 on purpose. His daughter was born on 11-09-14.

General Mike 04-11-2019 08:33 PM

I don't have the irrational hate for him that I have for a lot of the people who have been dominant players in the past, so I guess good on him.

JonInMiddleGA 04-12-2019 02:06 AM

There really needs to be a week where they bring back the players he's beaten and let them have another go at it. Some of them haven't been awful but they've had no chance against may very well be a cyborg.

Eh, it doesn't take any money out of his pocket and they do have to fill a lot of slots. No harm in having a Jeopardy NIT that I can see

Coming around to this point of view now. I first felt like most of his hype was bis willingness to bet big, and sometimes unwisely so (and still feel like that might be his downfall sooner than deserved) but he is a very, very good player who combines vast knowledge, excellent buzzer timing (not to be overlooked), and aggressive game theory. He's very imposing.

(After re-breaking the record by a ton last night)

cuervo72 04-18-2019 04:41 PM

Oh, it has to suck to run up against him in your one shot. But they tape what, 200 new shows a season? So they need about 400 new contestants? Think of that in terms of just LL participants, of which there are about 12,000. You'd need 30 seasons to get everybody (granted...a good number of Llamas have already been on the show). But even that's a tiny percentage of aspirants.

Lathum 04-29-2019 06:29 PM

Imagine putting up 53,999 and losing?

So sick. The guy played it perfectly and still couldn't win

Maybe Holzhauer is also able to cure cancer.

Jas_lov 05-29-2019 06:45 PM

There was one guy last week that would have beaten James had he went all in on the DD. Don't know why he didnt. Since then it's been lambs to the slaughter again.

stevew 06-03-2019 08:01 PM

He lost?
