Good idea about overloading the line :). Here's hoping we can just run over them and allow Amaya to get over his "combat stress". :p

Wow. Thursday comes up fast. Ok guys...excuse me for not looking at the upcoming opponent last night...but we play UNC right? I think my current gameplan will work...barring any injuries from last week.

CraigSca...any injuries I should know about since I'm at work at the moment?? Let me know and then I'll post the gameplan this morning.

Ok...barring any injuries...here's the gameplan vs UNC??

Craig - if I missed any defensive injuries...substitute at will.

Craig - Here are some last minute Defensive gameplanning changes since I noticed that the Heels were a Single Back offense. Change the Nickel and Dime Package percentages to 75 each. And then with the Run Expectations...change them to whatever the Scout recommends. Everything else should be fine where it is.

I really have no clue, but would that be too much multiple blitzing with them passing a lot? I'm just worried that we will leave a lot of guys open. Or are they really prone to giving up sacks?

CraigSca 11-12-2004 10:49 AM

I'll be running this in about 15 mins. At this point, I'm going to keep that biltzes as MikeVick has them, unless he asks for a change. I have confidence that out defense will come up big against these guys - unless I'm proven to be wrong - ha!

CraigSca 11-12-2004 11:17 AM

Recruits who's future calls will add no value:

DB - Fleming, Rasmussen
G - Moorthy, Sanderson
T - Blackwell

New Recruits:

OLB Higbee - BTSed, so scholarship offered
QB Carrigan - mildly pleased by call, at least one school he'd pick over us (most likely UVA)
WR Tarkenton - a little surprised by call, at least one school he'd pick over us

BTW, Vex, I think your formatting is great. Very easy to read and move through the recruiting phase.

Only green recruit listed I couldn't phone/visit was DB Copperfield.

CraigSca 11-12-2004 11:28 AM

Regarding the last minuted defensive changes - the scout wanted even more nickel and dime packages, as well as suggested upping the blitzing. As requested, I used the run expectations of the scout and changed the rest of the stuff back.

On to the game!

CraigSca 11-12-2004 11:43 AM

North Carolina State (2-2) (-2) at North Carolina (2-3), No TV

Attendance: 26,300
Weather: 77 degrees, fair

We win the toss and elect to receive. Kick is returned 20 yards to our own 19. Everyone get ready for the Orlando Macri show - he will get the ball early and often.

Amaya runs a draw for 2, Macri gains 4, and then Amaya connects on 11 yard pass play to Clark. 1st down! Macri gets 3 on first down, and then Amaya gets sacked on second. Hmm...a 3rd and 14 pass is blocked at the line. North Carolina will get the ball. Tar Heel ball at their own 31.

Oddly, they run on their first two plays (gains of 2 and 3 yards). Offensive holding on third down (and a serious injury to #24 Hughes of UNC) brings up 3rd and 14. Arnswaldt is coming on the blitz, and it disrupts their timing - illegal motion - 3rd and 19. Incomplete pass - deflected by Spaulding. 4th and 19 and we get the ball back - 9:36 left in the 1st.

N.C. State ball on their own 43. Linquist gets 6 on the right side, and then we get pass happy again. Sweeney gets barreled over and it forces Amaya to hurry and incompletion. On 3rd down, #79 Huntley forces Amaya into another hurried incomplete pass - he's now 1 for 4 for 11 yards. Macri is injured on the play - ugh - but it doesn't appear to be serious. What happened to that ball control rushing attack?!

UNC starts at their own 5 because of their 3rd penalty of the day (illegal block). Jolly runs for 18 on 1st down - yuck. Two plays later, Schmaltz and Davis combine for the sack - 3rd and 16. Flynn defends the 3rd down pass - 4th and 16 - 6:21 left. N.C. State starts on the UNC 48 - we're winning the battle of field position, though the total offenses of both teams have combined for a mere 36 yards (19 of which is ours).

Macri is back in the game and carries for 3. Again on 2nd down Amaya passes and this time gets lucky - complete to Clark for a 27 yard gain. Ball on the 18. On 3rd down, Amaya passes again and finds Clark open for 15 down to the 1. 1st and goal. Macri loses 2, but Linquist barrels in for the 3 yard TD run. N.C. State 7, UNC 0 - 2:18 left in the 1st.

UNC comes out passing - but it's futile as Schmaltz forces an inc via a hurry, and Branch blocks another pass at the line. We get the bal back via the punt at our 11. 1:04 left.

Amaya AGAIN passes - this time on first down - and it proves costly - intercepted and run back 17 yards for the easy score. UGHHHH! N.C. State 7, UNC 7 - 54 secs left.

Amaya ends the quarter with yet another pass - a 22 yard completion to Brodie. 1st and 10 at the UNC 48.

CraigSca 11-12-2004 11:52 AM

2nd Quarter action...

N.C. State ball on the UNC 48. Macri breaks one for 15 yards after a great block by Lentzner - he now has 25 yards on 7 carries. Amaya again throws (despite my pleadings from the sideline) and connects to Clark (again!) for 18 yards. 1st and 10 at the UNC 15. We finally focus on running the ball, and 4 plays later Linquist scores his 2nd TD of the day, via a 3 yard TD run. 7 plays, 70 yards, 3:40 off the clock. N.C. State 14, UNC 7 - 12:14 left in the half.

Another 3 and out for UNC - they mustered only 28 yards of offense.

On 3rd and 10 from our own 24 - Amaya finds his favorite receiver again for 18 yards. We then methodically drive down the field. Our rushing attack is finding the holes, and Amaya continually connects with Carter. The drive ends when Orland Macri breaks off the right guard for a 12 yard TD run, giving us a 21-7 lead. 8 plays, 76 yards, 3:31 off the clock. 6:13 left in the half.

UNC finally begins to move the ball against us, and they pick up 3 first downs on the next drive. They stall at our 18, and a 45 yard FG attempt falls short of the crossbar. 1:41 left in the half.

Our drive goes nowhere, and neither does their's. We've held their quarterback, Babbitt to 4 completions in 16 attempts in the first half.

Halftime Score: N.C. State 21, North Carolina 7

First Downs: N.C. State 14, UNC 5
Rushing: N.C. State 73, UNC 46
Passing: N.C. State 146, UNC 39

Lookin good!

CraigSca 11-12-2004 12:01 PM

On to the 2nd half, where UNC begins at their own 27.

3 and out for UNC, and we get the ball back at our own 19.

For whatever reason, Amaya begins the half thinking he's Warren Moon. Mackie drops his first attempt, but Wertz catches the second for 11 yards. Finally, Amaya goes deep  to Clark who somehow comes down with the ball for a 55 yard reception. Go figure. I really want to see Clark's stats - he is having a monster game! 1st and 10 at the UNC 15. Touchdown! Amaya connects with Gino Linquist for the 15 yard pass. 4 plays, 81 yards - 1:43 off the clock. N.C. State 28, UNC 7 - 12:10 left in the 3rd.

3 and out for UNC. Babbitt is now 5 for 22. Good grief.

Our ball at our 41. 9 plays and 56 yards later our drive stalls at the 3 yard line. Allen connects on the 20 yard FG - N.C. State 31, North Carolina 7. Amaya continues his John Elway impersonation with 260 yards passing thus far.

The next drive begins with sacks by Schmaltz and Arnswaldt. We are teeing off now! Of course I say that and Babbitt throws a 92 yard TD pass on the very next play  . Son of a.... The 2 point conversion fails, and we continue to lead 31-13. 4:18 left in the 3rd.

The quarter ends with 3 and outs by both football teams. On the last play of the quarter, Amaya finds Clark open deep for a 30 yard completion. Whatever. 1st and 10 at the N.C. State 42.

CraigSca 11-12-2004 12:02 PM

Apparently Amaya is over his post-combative stress syndrome . . .

What a primadonna! I swear that I'm calling run plays! Amaya keeps audibling out of them. Who does he think he is? Peyton Manning? ;)

CraigSca 11-12-2004 12:10 PM

4th quarter...

8 plays and 93 yards, Linquist scores his 3rd TD of the day on a 25 yard TD run. N.C. State 38, UNC 13 - 11:20 left in the game.

Call off the dogs...Macri ambles 65 yards on a trap for a TD on our next drive. Lentzner gets the KRB on this one. N.C. State 45, UNC 13 - 6:03 left. Macri has over 160 yards rushing and Linquist has over 80 yards.

We have the ball back with 1:47 left after stopping UNC yet again. We have 6 sacks for 40 yards on the day.

Linquist carries the ball 3 times (17 carries for 90 yards) but fails to come up with the first down. 6 secs left for UNC. Game over.

Get this - 250 yards rushing and 295 yards passing for us today - 545 total yards?!

Final Score: North Carolina State 45, North Carolina 13

I was wondering why that Clark kid was being used as a third wide receiver before I took over OC. He's a natural Split End.

I like it :D

CraigSca 11-12-2004 12:26 PM

The 55 yard bomb was a bomb...a number of the others were 10 yard passes that Donald tacked on a number of yards. If you look at his season stats - he has 583 yards on 28 catches. 197 of those yards are after the catch - about 8 per catch.

Every pass today, however, he seemed to be tacking on 10+ yards.

CraigSca 11-12-2004 12:28 PM

Hmm..looking at his stats today...he only had 48 YAC of his 218 yards receiving. I know the one 55 yarder was a bomb that he had 0 yards tacked on. The rest would therefore average to approx. 160 yards on 9 catches - 48 YAC means about 112 yards via the air...divide by 9 - thats ~ 13 yards per pass play via the air without the one long pass.

Excellent job by the D. If you consider the only breakdown they had was on one fluke 92 yard TD pass. And that was pass interference on the offense. I don't believe the officials missed that call! :)

I don't figure color coding serves any purpose now since I'm doing both the offense and defense. I also added the player ratings for each player.

CraigSca 11-12-2004 10:35 PM

Just some notes on Maryland:

They have a very balanced offense (373.3 ypg) led by the #2 rusher in the country, Omar Keeton (121 carries, 717 yards, 10 TDs) - the team averages 5.6 yard per carry. This will be a true-test for our rushing defense. Defensively, they can be run on a little, and they can definitely be passed on (9th in the ACC in passing defense and 10th in the ACC with only 11 sacks). Do we see more Amaya to Clark in the future?

Maryland's best players according to our scout:

CB Matthew Bays - 99
RB Omar Keeton - 89 - unfortunately, only a junior
DT Nathan Skae - 85
TE Arnold Ahantou - 84
FB West Hastings - 83
OLB Quinn Biccum - 80

Interestingly for us, Donald Clark leads the ACC in receiving after his two monster games. All-everything Herman Sanderson leads the ACC in tackles (45) and TFLs (16). Arnswaldt is 6th in tackles with 33.
