I don't think it is a wide scale tactic, either. I would imagine that the type of people that are willing to be employed solely to spy and cheat, are probably also the type of people that would either not keep quiet about it or would try to blackmail the program in order to keep quiet once they left.
You might find some GAs and 'hangers on' that would be willing to do it out of loyalty or to further their careers, but even here at WVU, there are so many little secrets that get out, I doubt something like this would be kept under wraps so closely if it was going on and involved a large number of people. |
The notorious one I remember was Jimbo forgetting that Dameyune Craig had worked at FSU from 2010-12 and knew the signals in the first half of the championship game vs. Auburn.

Wasn't there a pretty big scandal with a Wake Forest announcer giving up a bunch of information on the team to opponents? I think Louisville was the team he gave it to.

In all seriousness, what's the difference between this and advanced scouting in baseball where you sit and watch the other team, pick pitcher grips, pitch tells, etc.? I assume if you can pick up on certain signs, whether between pitcher-catcher or base coaches and hitters/runners, you would pass that info along, right? As long as you're not video recording stuff or sneaking into closed practices, I would think this is typical stuff. |
The question is (as was in Spygate), are they doing it from prohibited locations? If not, godspeed and have fun.
|
Quote:
Scouting in person has been against the rules since 1994 so prohibited locations would include games. That's apparently the issue. |
Huh. Had no idea! Lazy coaches protecting themselves from each other.

The intent was to improve balance between higher budget programs and lower budget programs by reducing scouting expenses. If only those ADs and coaches from 1994 could see the analysis and file breakdowns in place today at these high budget programs.:) What you don't get from film is how teams handle their personnel package organization, signs, and other administrative type tasks. You can get a better feel for some of that stuff from tv broadcasts then you can from All-22 film. |
Who says you need hired staff? During my daughter's mid-major softball career, parents would scout teams at tournaments or get reports from parents and players on other teams who played upcoming teams and we'd feed coaches or our kids all sorts of info. And of course they would talk to other coaches for info as well. Just doesn't seem like s big deal to me.

Probably not as big a scandal as it should have been (that's a common theme in articles I found to refresh the details) The announcer, who only moved to the booth after not being retained as an assistant coach when Grobe was let go, was passing plays along to quite a few teams, including Louisville, Army, and Va Tech. His contact at Va Tech? Shane Beamer. The Athletic dives into WakeyLeaks, and players' reactions on its impact |
If it is true, it's a huge deal. Michigan is currently under investigation for other rules violations that included suspensions for Harbaugh and another coach. If they're out there breaking more rules in the middle of that investigation, this doesn't go well for them (assuming the NCAA has any teeth left).
I'm guessing there's something behind this more than complaints if the NCAA notified the Big Ten and their future opponents. |

Someone posted a video clip of a halftime interview of Greg Schiano where he mentions 2-3 times something going on out there that we need to stop, which in retrospect seems like it has something to do with signs or something other than just the way his team is playing.

My bad, if anybody couldn't see it. AFAIK their online still allows three free page views a month so I figured linking here would get anybody in that wanted to read it. |
Michigan staffer eyed as center of 'elaborate' scouting scheme, sources say - ESPN
I may be putting two plus two together and getting fifteen but as soon as they mentioned a source with knowledge of Michigan's staff, my immediate thought was this guy. Michigan says it had proof against fired assistant Matt Weiss - ESPN |

I would say that falls under 'institutional control'. I.e., if he didn't know, he should have.

WKU cannot be the first school to think of this. This is pretty neat.

Why is their mascot Sexy Red Grimace

I mean the WFL tried doing different pants for different position groups.
Also I think I saw something where FSU did this back in the 60s. Or at least for offense/defense/two-way. |
Quote:
Army did this years ago where each position group wore the decal of a different division. |
I’m pretty sure one of the service academies did this recently. Maybe Navy.
|
Holy shit, Fox. College football doesn't need 20 minutes of you dicking around.

The refs just scored 14 points on Penn State in one series.

What call did you disagree with? The penalties were all obvious. Edit to add that the personal foul call could have been skipped but it was still 2nd and goal from the 2. |
I'd probably boo for taking a knee with three timeouts left too.

First half McCord means you take the knee. Both QBs have had rough starts but McCord has been a mess. |
You have to catch that punt, Penn St. returner guy

This OSU - PSU game is pretty boring. Both teams look bad.

Maybe Iowa was all the Big Tens we watched along the way.

Kodos, save your mustard for Minnesota- Iowa. Going to be a barn burner!
|
Go Gophers!
|
"We've secretly replaced the Penn State offense with Iowa's - let's see if they notice!"
|
So I assume Penn State thought they wouldn't get the ball back if they punted? Seemed early for 4th down try in a 1 score game in your own half.
|
I was worried about Allard, but he's looked really rough today.
|
Marvin Harrison is the best player on the field and Allar is seeing ghosts.
It's always good to see James Franklin looking lost on the sideline. |
It's time to talk to your children about bowl eligible Rutgers

UCF trying to tie and decides, what if we go for the dumbest fucking 2 point try from the 3?

I feel dirty typing this. Go Vols! Great opening drive.

Tennessee has to settle for FG twice in the Redzone is going to come back and bite them. You have to bury Alabama when you have the chance.

Yeah, I'm not sounding the Upset Alert horn just yet (even if the teams are more evenly judged then normal, it's freaking Alabama, Tennessee winning would be considered an upset)... but another score or two would help. And stopping them just outside FG range just a minute ago will help
|
Tennessee comes out at halftime and just repeatedly kick themselves in the nuts.

God I hope no one is watching this game

Vols are coached by a man with the IQ of a turnip.

The exact words I'm thinking watching this WVU-Oklahoma State game. Andrew Wilson-Lamp for WVU just did the dumbest and most ridiculous thing I've ever seen a WVU player do on the field. I'm not posting. I'm sure it's on twitter. Probably worth finding. |
Tennessee completely self-destructing.
