Steam's Next Fest runs for a week starting today-offering many demos of upcoming games, and this time that includes a demo of Paradox's new 4x strategy game, Millenia,

Millennia on Steam

bhlloy 02-05-2024 03:30 PM

Not sure I can be less excited about a Civ ripoff from Paradox. Can’t wait for the first DLC that unlocks the builder with basic functionality. Buy the season pass to get the ability to build roads!

Capital 02-08-2024 08:43 AM

I'm playing Lamplighters League and it's a good game with a different kind of look and feel. While many of the bugs have been fixed their still a big memory leak bug when a lot of things are happening. Should have been fixed but Paradox disbanded the team.

Anyway, still would recommend LL just because of the uniqueness and character development in the XCOM like genre but the way this was handled would give me pause on their other games.

Shame that Cities:Skylines II still sucks, apparently. I was super interested, but I'm never an early adopter and very glad of that right now.

Thomkal 02-12-2024 12:12 PM

A Slay the Spire like game. SpellRogue has left early access. this one is a bit different in that you use dice to cast spells to defeat the baddies. Color me intrigued:

Flatout was a blast. Flatout 2 was even better -- IIRC, they added some mods and tweaked the progression in addition to better graphics. Flatout 3 was a steaming pile. Not sure it's even playable.

PilotMan 02-14-2024 11:26 AM

Flatout 2 was awesome, but Wreckfest is the more modern, spiritual successor of it, that is just as fun.

Anyone played News Tower yet? It was just released as early access, and looks intriguing to me. Basically a newspaper tycoon/builder game based in 1930's New York City. I usually shy away from early access games, but I may take the plunge on this one, as it looks pretty fleshed out already.

Nookrium on YouTube had a first look at it-didn't grab me enough to want to play it, but the setting/story was different than most games. Not sure how much the tycoon/building the newspaper back to full glory parts interest me enough though

If you finished Baldur’s Gate 3 and still want more from the dev, their prior two games are bundled together on Steam with all the DLC for about $15. Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition and Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition.

As a side note why are there 30 guests viewing this thread?

Putting it here because the game is playable (demo, full release in three days)..

Balatro is fucking digital CRACK.

At its heart, you're building poker hands using a standard deck of card. You play up to 5 cards at a time, and try to make poker hands (Straights/Flushes etcetera require five cards) You get points per scoring card (so if you say, put forward two pair, the fifth card won't score) and the type of hand you play as a modifier. You have a limited number of discards each round to help you get rid of cards that don't fit your goals in poker building.

Sounds pretty yawn inducing, right?

Enter the Jokers, The Planets and the Arcana. they modify the rules in different ways. Jokers for example, may give you a bonus every time you score a card of a certain suit, or odd/even.. Planets allow you to muck about with cards, adding modifiers (like a random chance to earn a ton of bonus/cash), or change their suit and rank.

So, as you get deeper and deeper into a run, you might need a score of say, 6,400 compared to 300 in your first round, but you have a LOT more strategy.

You can have up to five jokers, and there are some extremely busted combos (in my demo beating run, I had a Joker which increased all the Jokers values by 1 after each round, and another Joker that gave you a multiplier bonus for each dollar your Jokers are worth. Needless to say, it ramped up QUICKLY, especially when I had a joker that provided 30 chips (before the multiplier) for each diamond I played in a hand

It's roguelike in that you make decisions on what to do with each run, but progression is limited in the demo

Seriously, if you like brain stretching combo strategy games, try the demo free on Steam, and buy it when it comes out in three days.

JonInMiddleGA 02-17-2024 06:12 AM

Yeah, Balatro ain't a bad timewaster at ALL.

Easy to learn, relatively easy to progress through ... kind of a bitch to actually beat the "boss" at the end of 5 rounds.

Reminds me of Luck Be A Landlord but slicker

BYU 14 02-21-2024 01:19 PM

Balatro is everything as advertised here. Highly recommend.

rjolley 02-21-2024 02:45 PM

I'll add a fourth for Balatro. Played the demo for a bit and have it in my cart now. Enjoyed it a lot.

Bobble 02-22-2024 08:57 AM

OK, you got me. I picked up Balatro. Spent most of last night chugging away. I eventually "won" with the green deck (get money for leftover Hands and Discards). I say "won" because every boss blind was a challenge EXCEPT the last boss blind. His power was to shuffle and flip my joker cards. They still work just like they did, you just can't see them. Fine. I had been using essentially the same Jokers for the last couple of rounds so I knew what was worthwhile. Even if I didn't, I guess I could have written them down ahead of time since you see the boss blind's power before you get there. Seems like a cheap win but a win is a win.

Free weekend of Dying Light 2 on Steam thru the weekend

Edit: And Civ 6 as well

thesloppy 02-22-2024 06:38 PM

I got quite a Balatro run going today. I had a joker that gave me +.25X multiplier for every added card, which I got up to 7.25X mult, and then I had another joker that copied that joker, resulting in:

SirFozzie 02-22-2024 10:03 PM

I've come THIS close to clearing the first "Kill Screen" blind (Ante 11, where it goes from 1,000,000 to 7.2 Million.

Oh, and we are completely spoiled this week, as Solium Infernium's remake comes out this week.

Thomkal 03-04-2024 10:26 AM

GoG.com has a free game to giveaway over the next couple of days and this is a bit different in that it was originally a DLC/add-on for the game, Driftlands the Magic Revival, but now has apparently released as a standalone game, Nomads of Driftlands: The Forgotten Passage:

RATING / ESRB / A

Last Epoch == Fun.

It's Diablo without the absurd costs and microtransactions, and Path of Exile without the double doctorate required to comprehend it.

For Hearts of Iron IV fans, get three DLC's for free for a limited time on Steam:

It's come a long way since beta. Definitely worth playing if you like the Diablo-style ARPGs. The classes are fun and there's solid variety in builds without getting to PoE layers of depth.

Most game selling sites are having a spring sale this week-so might be worth checking several sites to get the best sale

Sweed 03-15-2024 07:22 AM

Ping GrantDawg, or anyone else that plays..

Most or all (can't get a complete list of all games, not sure why?) Combat Mission games are 50% off until March 21 on the spring Steam sale. 55 to 60% off on bundles.

I'll probably pick up the newest Final Blitzkrieg, though I've barely scratched the surface of the three other WWII titles I got over the holidays. But it's hard to pass up the bundle for $42.73 compared to the base game's regular price of $59.99. ;)

You can just grab them directly from Steam as well. Thanks for the tip! 3 full expansions will make the game a lot better.

This is a great site that will make it easier: CheapShark - PC Game Deals

One thing I really like is if you do a search for a game it will list all the current prices and also the lowest price the game has sold for in the past.

I saw DasTactic stream a preview play of Millenia. Doesn't look great. Like a weak, indie Civ.

Comparisons with Civ are inevitable. The unique part that stands out for me is the various Ages your civ encounters, and depending on which path you take to more warlike and more 'out there' ages as you go

Thanks for that Weegee. Had not seen it before-does make things a little easier to find deals

dubb93 03-16-2024 06:01 AM

I bought a game for $45 the day before the sale so I refunded it and bought it again for $7. Now I got $38 to spend. Any ideas? I was thinking Marvel Midnight Sons for like $25 of it with all the DLC. Any $10ish RPGs or strategy games worth the plunge?

Thomkal 03-16-2024 07:06 AM

Crusader Kings 3 is $20
Hearts of Iron IV is $11 if you like world war 2 games
Monster train is $7.50
Dice Legacy is $4
Against the Storm is $20
Gloomhaven is $17.50
Disco Elysium is $10
Valheim is $12
Horizon:Zero Dawn is $12.50

GrantDawg 03-16-2024 07:28 AM

I loved Midnight Sons. I will say I only got about half way through a replay and stopped after I finished it the first time. I might still go back and replay with the dlc's but I haven't yet. But the first playthrough was a blast.

I will co-sign this. Played for over 100 hours on the first run and loved every minute. I have not attempted any replay or new game+ stuff or whatever, but do intend to someday pick up the DLC and do so.

Honolulu_Blue 03-16-2024 02:19 PM

While I sort of petered out a little over halfway through it, I did really enjoy Midnight Sons. The writing was surprisingly good and I liked the combat, deck building and strategy of it all. I felt like the game was a bit overstuffed, but quite good.

dubb93 03-17-2024 06:55 PM

Anyone ever play Mad Games Tycoon 2? Or I guess the first one even? I’m thinking of picking that one up with the excess refund.

JonInMiddleGA 03-17-2024 07:13 PM

The first three HOI4 DLCs are free during the Steam spring sale.

Apparently, if I read the dev post correctly, after the sale ends those will all become part of the base game for future buyers.

I mention it here just in case someone has it already but weren't into it enough to buy the three previous main DLCs, free is a solid enough price to at least grab 'em.

Thomkal 03-21-2024 12:18 PM

Battlefiled 2042 and Midnight Ghost Hunt is free to play through the weekend.
