Yeah, Bale looked nasty. I have a feeling he was barfing in order to get that thin.

JeeberD 08-15-2005 05:01 PM

Frida

The movie itself, 5/10.

Salma's nudity, 25/10. I don't care if she DID have a unibrow in it...

Draft Dodger 08-15-2005 05:27 PM

DVD - Sideways 8/10 (although it might get bonus points because I was unable to watch it without drinking large amounts of wine)
Theater? Can't remember - it's been a while.

Bad-example 08-15-2005 05:29 PM

Richard III - Comcast On Demand

9/10 - Based on the Shakespeare play and set in a 1940-ish time period, this is a lavish and intense movie that shows Ian Mckellan at his very best. Fantastic art direction.

Interesting story to some extent, but you have to be REALLY into the pothead caricature to enjoy the film. Basically Ed Wood, except stoned out of his mind.

And I agree with the above poster -- Teenagers From Outer Space, while incredibly cheesy, is one of the most watchable MST3K movies they ever did.

American Movie is 10/10 for me.

ThunderingHERD 08-15-2005 06:02 PM

American Movie is a 10. No question about it. One of the funniest movies ever made.

I get the urge to watch it all the time, but I let somebody borrow the DVD a few years ago and never got it back. It's like $25 for a new copy, which is a steep price to rebuy at, so I've been American Movie-less for too long.

Last night, man, I was so drunk, I was calling Morocco, man. Trying to get to the Hotel Hilton at Tangiers in Casablanca, man. That's pathetic, man. Is that what you wanna do with your life? Suck down peppermint schnapps and try to call Morocco at 2:00 in the morning? That's senseless. But that's what happens, man.

korme 08-17-2005 02:03 AM

Just watched Collateral again.. 9/10. Very good flick.

Honolulu_Blue 08-17-2005 06:35 AM

Supertroopers: 8/10.

Easily one of the funniest movies I've seen in years. I feel stupid for having waited so long to actually see it.

Groundhog 08-17-2005 06:45 AM

It: 7.5/10

It was originally a TV movie, and the adult actors aren't nearly as good as the child actors, but hey, Tim Curry makes a freaky ass clown. Also, bonus points for being a Stephen King adaption that isn't completely terrible, though I haven't read the book.

Flasch186 08-17-2005 07:32 AM

Sin City

6 out of 10 as a movie 10 out of 10 for gore factor and innovation.

The Great Raid

I was dragged out to this movie without knowing anything of it. Sometimes not seeing a trailer, or knowing the plot or cast can be a good thing. I entered the movie with no expectations and they were met with a boring, dull snoozefest. Felt like a documentary on the history channel without commercials. Highly not suggested. 2.5 / 10

Last Movie at home: Spanglish - Overall 5/10, first 90 minutes 7/10 last 30 minutes 1/10

Last Theater Movie: Batman Begins - Overall 9/10, would have gotten a 10/10 if they got rid of that lame ass unrealistic car.

I liked this:

"Dead Poets Society" is not the worst of the countless recent movies about good kids and hidebound, authoritatian older people. It may, however, be the most shameless in its attempt to pander to an adolescent audience. The movie pays lip service to qualities and values that, on the evidence of the screenplay itself, it is cheerfully willing to abandon.

timmynausea 08-17-2005 10:56 AM

This is my favorite Ebert work of late:

Quote:

The movie created a spot of controversy last February. According to a story by Larry Carroll of MTV News, Rob Schneider took offense when Patrick Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times listed this year's Best Picture Nominees and wrote that they were "ignored, unloved and turned down flat by most of the same studios that ... bankroll hundreds of sequels, including a follow-up to 'Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,' a film that was sadly overlooked at Oscar time because apparently nobody had the foresight to invent a category for Best Running Penis Joke Delivered by a Third-Rate Comic."

Schneider retaliated by attacking Goldstein in full-page ads in Daily Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. In an open letter to Goldstein, Schneider wrote: "Well, Mr. Goldstein, I decided to do some research to find out what awards you have won. I went online and found that you have won nothing. Absolutely nothing. No journalistic awards of any kind ... Maybe you didn't win a Pulitzer Prize because they haven't invented a category for Best Third-Rate, Unfunny Pompous Reporter Who's Never Been Acknowledged by His Peers."

Reading this, I was about to observe that Schneider can dish it out but he can't take it. Then I found he's not so good at dishing it out, either. I went online and found that Patrick Goldstein has won a National Headliner Award, a Los Angeles Press Club Award, a RockCritics.com award, and the Publicists' Guild award for lifetime achievement.

Schneider was nominated for a 2000 Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actor, but lost to Jar-Jar Binks.

But Schneider is correct, and Patrick Goldstein has not yet won a Pulitzer Prize. Therefore, Goldstein is not qualified to complain that Columbia financed "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" while passing on the opportunity to participate in "Million Dollar Baby," "Ray," "The Aviator," "Sideways" and "Finding Neverland." As chance would have it, I have won the Pulitzer Prize, and so I am qualified. Speaking in my official capacity as a Pulitzer Prize winner, Mr. Schneider, your movie sucks.

Schmidty 08-17-2005 01:57 PM

Ebert is the most worthless "reviewer" ever. He lets his politics cloud every single movie he sees and then reports on. Not only that, but he's a hypocrite. He dogs certain movies for being commercial and shallow, yet he is both of those things himself. The fact that people like him alledgedly get paid to give "thumbs up" on certain movies makes every single thing else that he comments on worthless.

I guess you could say that I dislike him intensely, and critics as a whole maybe a little less intensely.

timmynausea 08-17-2005 03:52 PM

He's nowhere near as bad as Rex Reed or the Medvid/Lyons combo. Ebert at least knows how hard it is to make a bad movie (Beyond the Valley of the Dolls).

And if his politics influenced all of his reviews, he would have loved "The Life of David Gale."

I actually thought this was surprisingly decent, say a 3/10. Of course it was B-grade with howlingly incompetent FX, but the director managed to create a feel of surrealism with the zombie-like hero, the strikingly odd-looking heroine, and the perpetual late afternoon lighting. Plus, it has King Moody of Get Smart!

Um, Ebert is probably one of the friendliest of any respected film critic to major Hollywood films.

Wait, the fact that people "like him" (not him) "alledgedly" (apparently you have no evidence) get paid for a "thumb ups" (which has nothing to do with his pieces for the Sun Times) makes everything he says worthless? That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing your extremely rational opinions.

finally watched Collateral last night for the first time. 8.5/10.

If you guys don't mind reading sub-titles, you should check out a movie called City of God. It's very good. I give it a 8.5/10 also.

chinaski 08-17-2005 05:30 PM

just watched the DVD of Kung Fu Hustle, Chow is the BEST! Hollywood needs to take some serious notes.

9/10

Just watched House of Flying Daggers

7/10

Big Fish. One of the most mixed reviewed movies I've ever heard about. Finally watched it.

Solid 6.5/10. Nice touching story, but nothing overwhelming. Helena Bonham Carter and Alison Lohman are winners.

Kind of a sad unusual moment. I was looking at Big Fish on IMDb, and checked out Karl the Giant's bio. He died 8 days ago.

JeeberD 08-18-2005 09:43 AM

Shaun of the Dead - 6/10

There are some very funny moment, but too damn often I couldn't understand a word of what was being said...

Bruce Willis rocks although some things in this movie didn't make sense.

DVD - Million Dollar Baby - 5 out of 10. Not sure what the big hub-bub was about, boss.

JeeberD 08-24-2005 10:23 AM

Redeye - 7/10

Decent enough movie but some of the acting was overdone and and the plot was kinda out there...

Just saw it and suprisingly really liked it. 9/10. I say suprisingly, because I normally hate Tim Burton's directing.

Also saw Sin City and I'd give it a 7/10 having never read the comics. A couple of the story lines were good, but I thought the Del Toro one about the peace between the cops and old town dragged.

Next up: Kung Fu Hustle and Oldboy.

I saw this in the theater and LOVED it... but I lived in Europe for a while and didn't have an issue with the dialog.

solid 8/10 for me...

I saw Skeleton Key a couple weeks back... It was ok, ending was bleh... 5/10.

4.5 for Troy? Ugh! That movie rules.

House of Flying Daggers - 2/10, hot chick and that's about it. I couldn't get over the stretch of the imagination type stuff, such as a blind girl who happens to be the most baddest fighter in the land.
