ok, what the heck is "gems" on steam ? Quick google search turned up little usefull information.

djsatu 12-17-2014 03:45 PM

Hey guys should I play Borderlands 1 before Borderlands 2? Im looking for some new games on my PC right now. I have all the Halflife games, and am almost done the first one. I am a console convert that loves my sports sim text games and shooters mostly. Any other recommendations for some games to get?

Ramzavail 12-17-2014 04:14 PM

I just had this weird conversation with someone I didn't know.

What does uploading the .exe even mean? copy it and post it on mediafire or something? Sounded really fishy.

ramzavail: hey
ramzavail: do I know you
Kawaii Clooney: no, but i have a request
Kawaii Clooney: you have iron fisticle, right?
ramzavail: yes
Kawaii Clooney: could you upload the .exe
Kawaii Clooney: just the .exe
Kawaii Clooney: my game refuses to download it
Kawaii Clooney: and i haven't been able to play the game i bought :(
ramzavail: email the developer
ramzavail: he seems to respond often
Kawaii Clooney: already did, he said it was a problem with steam
ramzavail: ive spoken to him
Kawaii Clooney: i've done all the reccomended steps, nothing
Kawaii Clooney: i was just wondering if i could get the exe off you
ramzavail: honestly, i wouldnt even know how to do that
ramzavail: why dont you ask him to do it for you
Kawaii Clooney: uhm, okay
Kawaii Clooney: thanks anyway
ramzavail: sorry i couldnt help
ramzavail: bye

It's just like sending any other file.

Ramzavail 12-17-2014 04:20 PM

so was he/she asking me for the game file to play for free?

it does look semi-legit bc this person posted something on the forums about it. But still. Don't ask me.

They may have been or not. I've heard of a few games getting hacked by running the executable from a full game with the files that come from a demo version of the game.

I'd just let the developer handle the situation.

PilotMan 12-17-2014 05:08 PM

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol for 1000 gems is a steal.

It's a Steam promo that is running right now. You can buy gems on the marketplace or you can trade in your cards or other things in your inventory for gems. Then you use the gems to bid auction style for a games giveaway that Steam is running right now. The auctions will run for the next couple of days until the winter sale starts on the 18th.

I just won a copy for 2750 gems. Didn't even know it was in the list until you posted.

Abe Sargent 12-17-2014 08:19 PM

I got DDSPB 4 too! 2900, totally worth it.

It's also a common way for a pirate to get their hands on an update.

PilotMan 12-17-2014 11:09 PM

I have a feeling that prices are going to start climbing on the auction tomorrow morning as people look to get that last deal and spend their gems. Get your stuff sooner rather than later.

EagleFan 12-17-2014 11:29 PM

Making my last look tonight. Will probably turn them into booster packs if I have any gems left and can't find something to use them on.

PilotMan 12-17-2014 11:42 PM

Going to bed as #2 on 3 bids and #3 on 2 more. I went through the whole list and that's all I'm aiming for. It would be about $22 out the door for a retail value of $123.

Abe Sargent 12-18-2014 04:50 AM

On this gem crap, I won:

Labyrinthine Dreams
DDS Pro-BBall 4
Total Pro Golf 3
Consortium
Conquest of Elysium
Patrician III
A Game of Dwarves
Our Darker Purpose
Avernum: Escape from the Pit
Eterium
The Mysterious Cities of Gold
Defenders of Ardania Collection
Star Drive

And that was all for an investment of $20. And I sold a few cards as well and used them too, don't know if that counts as plus $20 or not. I only sold enough to finish off another bag with the remnants of my cash though.

That was a strong thing we just did!

Edit - and of those 13 games, 9 were on my wish list.

Double EDIT - And of those, the ones I'm most looking forward to are Eterium, Consortium, and Dreams

PilotMan 12-18-2014 08:24 AM

Alright I just got my last game. I loaded up my account and traded in maybe 1 emoticon. Total investment was about $27.

Draft Day Sports Pro Basketball 4
Cold War
For the Glory
Jurassic Park: The Game
Pro Cycling Manager 2014
Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People Season 1
Showtime!
Cricket Captain 2014

I grabbed Ground Zeros because I know no matter how much I hate the Metal Gear Solid series I'll end up playing them all.

Also picked up Endless Legend yesterday on its daily deal and joined everyone else in getting DDSPB in an auction.

If anyone is considering Dark Souls 2, while I'd 100% recommend the game it's probably best to hold off on buying it. Next year they're releasing Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, a version that includes all DLC and has graphics upgrades that won't be coming to the current Steam version.

mckerney 12-18-2014 12:57 PM

Dark Souls for $4.99 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengance for $5.99 are great deals, 2 of the best action games you'll find on PC.

I was leading in the bid for Unrest at the end of the gem sale. I have neither the game or my gems back. I'm hoping it's just stuck.

Edit: Just got Unrest.

IlliniCub 12-18-2014 05:42 PM

I have regular vanilla Civilization 5. I noticed they have have Civilization 5 complete on sale for like 12 bucks. Are the expansions worth the extra dough? Or should I just get the later expansion (brave new world) for $7.50 and would it include all the stuff in the expansion before it(gods and kings).

If you liked/loved Civ V and want a whole new experience for 12 bucks.

I simply cannot imagine a situation where someone wouldn't get 24 hours of gaming out of that. Plus if youre getting all the DLC and scenarios then you would be hard pressed to get more bang for twelve bucks.

IlliniCub 12-18-2014 06:10 PM

Awesome thanks! I'll grab it!

Wolfpack 12-18-2014 10:10 PM

So now I have Euro Truck and FSX. Previously I had Train Simulator. Dare I say it? I have... planes, trains, and automobiles (ok, trucks, but still...) :D

Honolulu_Blue 12-19-2014 09:52 AM

I grabbed that "Hegemony" game for $5.

I think I bought it because I am listening to a podcast about the Punic Wars right now. In fact, I almost plunked down $40 for all of the Rome: Total War 2 DLC, despite the fact that I haven't played RTW2 since, like, the week after I bought it.

I heard the patches made it a lot better. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

I picked up RTW2 in the last sale for the first time, the Emperor Edition, and I think it's playable and enjoyable.

Perfect, no.

But throw on some realism mods and don't get too upset over some wonky AI decisions and it's easy to get lost in conquering the world.

Blackadar 12-19-2014 11:03 AM

I was tempted on Rome:TW2 and it's even on my wishlist but I decided not to buy it.

1. We've been playing essentially the same TW game for 10 years now. I'm not talking about just the fundamentals of the game. I'm talking about the game itself. Same game, prettier graphics, different setting for over a decade. There is nothing fundamentally different in Shogun than there was in the original Rome or Medieval. When it comes to strategy games, I think the TW series has shown the least innovation of any major series in the last 15 years.

2. I have had massive technical problems with the TW series for quite some time. Rome ran fine on my systems. So did Medieval and even Medieval II. But they broke something in Empire to the point that I couldn't even load the game for 3 months due to a bug they put into a patch. Napoleon wasn't as bad, but still crapped out on me from time to time. Shogun 2 ran poorly and has a tendency to crash at the worst time - exiting a battle - meaning that I lose HOURS of non-saveable game time (can't save in battle) repeatedly. This is with entirely different PCs. Shogun wasn't always like that, but again it started happening after one of their patches. There's nothing fun about replaying a battle 3 times because the game crashed twice exiting it after winning.

So after remembering all of that, yeah, well...no Total War. I'll wait for the EU IV sale, though I dislike buying those games because they tend to fuck up the base game every time they release some major piece of DLC (plus you end up paying about 3x over for the game because of the necessary DLC that fixes problems in the core game).

1. Totally agree. It's why I didn't buy either Shogun. Only bought Medieval II basically for the LOTR mod. Wouldn't have bought RTW2 because of my love of the time period honestly.

2. That SUCKS.

Cannot recommend Valkyria Chronicles enough, it's a unique strategy RPG and has stunning cel shaded visuals. EDIT: It looks like I should note it's actually cheap right now from GreenManGaming with voucher code WINTER-SALE20-GROGRE, $12 instead of $15.

Plus a deal not currently listed on the front page, Battle Block Theater is on sale for $3.75 alongside Castle Crashers. It's a platformer that is the most fun I've had with a co-op game this year.

I played the demo of this and surprisingly it did not click with me.

I loaded up Ground Zeros last night and it looks incredible even on my old 560 ti. The audio design from sneaking around and using a directional mic in the rainstorm impressed me as well.

Awesome.

I'm psyched. I haven't had a console since PS2, so my Snake action has been limited over the years. However, my freshman year of high school was all about Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid. What a game that was.

Hoping CoH2-Ardennes Assault goes on sale during this event... hopefully before Monday...

NobodyHere 12-19-2014 06:04 PM

I'm also a person who hasn't really been engrossed in a Total War game since Medieval II.

That being said, Creative Assembly is reportedly working on a Warhammer Total War and that has me positively giddy.

frnk55 12-19-2014 06:06 PM

Jesus Christ is every game on Steam on sale? Not complaining I picked up Microsoft Flight sim 10 for 5 bucks. Haven't played FS in years.
