I don't think it is a wide scale tactic, either. I would imagine that the type of people that are willing to be employed solely to spy and cheat, are probably also the type of people that would either not keep quiet about it or would try to blackmail the program in order to keep quiet once they left.

You might find some GAs and 'hangers on' that would be willing to do it out of loyalty or to further their careers, but even here at WVU, there are so many little secrets that get out, I doubt something like this would be kept under wraps so closely if it was going on and involved a large number of people.

bronconick 10-19-2023 05:14 PM

The notorious one I remember was Jimbo forgetting that Dameyune Craig had worked at FSU from 2010-12 and knew the signals in the first half of the championship game vs. Auburn.

RainMaker 10-19-2023 05:20 PM

Wasn't there a pretty big scandal with a Wake Forest announcer giving up a bunch of information on the team to opponents? I think Louisville was the team he gave it to.

In all seriousness, what's the difference between this and advanced scouting in baseball where you sit and watch the other team, pick pitcher grips, pitch tells, etc.? I assume if you can pick up on certain signs, whether between pitcher-catcher or base coaches and hitters/runners, you would pass that info along, right?

As long as you're not video recording stuff or sneaking into closed practices, I would think this is typical stuff.

SirFozzie 10-19-2023 05:47 PM

The question is (as was in Spygate), are they doing it from prohibited locations? If not, godspeed and have fun.

Scouting in person has been against the rules since 1994 so prohibited locations would include games. That's apparently the issue.

Ksyrup 10-19-2023 06:23 PM

The intent was to improve balance between higher budget programs and lower budget programs by reducing scouting expenses. If only those ADs and coaches from 1994 could see the analysis and file breakdowns in place today at these high budget programs.:)

What you don't get from film is how teams handle their personnel package organization, signs, and other administrative type tasks. You can get a better feel for some of that stuff from tv broadcasts then you can from All-22 film.

Ksyrup 10-19-2023 07:46 PM

Who says you need hired staff? During my daughter's mid-major softball career, parents would scout teams at tournaments or get reports from parents and players on other teams who played upcoming teams and we'd feed coaches or our kids all sorts of info. And of course they would talk to other coaches for info as well. Just doesn't seem like s big deal to me.

Probably not as big a scandal as it should have been (that's a common theme in articles I found to refresh the details)

The announcer, who only moved to the booth after not being retained as an assistant coach when Grobe was let go, was passing plays along to quite a few teams, including Louisville, Army, and Va Tech. His contact at Va Tech? Shane Beamer.

The Athletic dives into WakeyLeaks, and players' reactions on its impact

HerRealName 10-19-2023 08:02 PM

If it is true, it's a huge deal. Michigan is currently under investigation for other rules violations that included suspensions for Harbaugh and another coach. If they're out there breaking more rules in the middle of that investigation, this doesn't go well for them (assuming the NCAA has any teeth left).

I'm guessing there's something behind this more than complaints if the NCAA notified the Big Ten and their future opponents.

Someone posted a video clip of a halftime interview of Greg Schiano where he mentions 2-3 times something going on out there that we need to stop, which in retrospect seems like it has something to do with signs or something other than just the way his team is playing.

No doubt had an axe to grind and most likely would have known about such a program. I am also having a really hard time believing Jim Harbaugh had no knowledge if this if it is true. IDk, maybe he knew what the guy's job was but didn't know he was using illegal resources? It seems far fetched that he wouldn't know.

Edit to add that the personal foul call could have been skipped but it was still 2nd and goal from the 2.

That loss and the one other ahead makes it easier to get rid of BF at least. Not that it will happen.

Ksyrup 10-21-2023 06:21 PM

Texas just got gifted a win. They ruled a guy down inches short of a 1st down and apparently refused to review it even though the replay clearly showed that he made the 9 yard line. Should have been a 1st and goal, instead they called a crappy rollout on 4th and didn't get it. What garbage.

JonInMiddleGA 10-21-2023 06:22 PM

My son sent me to Twitter, said "you gotta find that Iowa play if you didn't see it"

Okay, I find a clip. What I see -- without any context or knowledge of why I was watching mind you -- was a guy making a half-assed fair catch signal. The clip ended right after he caught the ball. My assumption, watching the same clip three times, was that he must have gotten hit and fumbled after the fair catch or something.

Only afterwards do I discover what actually unfolded.

Ghost Econ 10-21-2023 06:44 PM

Iowa had 2 yards in the 2nd half.
Iowa had 3.7 times as many punting yards as offensive yards.
Iowa ran 28 times for 11 yards.
Iowa had 8 first downs and 6 penalties.

Crazy sequence in Miami-Clemson game.

Clemson's QB fumbles right before crossing the goal line. Miami recovers.
On the very next play, Miami's RB breaks a long run, but is caught right at the end and fumbles. A trailing Miami player recovers it in the end zone for the TD.

We have a booster ready to cut the check to fire him right now. He was ready last week, the week before, ect. We have many more on board so he wouldn't have to shoulder that load himself. It was Gee's call last offseason it's going to be Gee's call again. Wren has some say, but until Gee is gone everything to do with the athletic department runs through him.

The worst part is that I think we beat teams with less talent earlier in the season, but, with any discipline whatsoever, we should have won these last two by 10+ each, in my opinion.

I don't care if the Canes pull this out, that sequence at the end of regulation is just incredibly dumb.

Miami had the momentum, a good kicker, plenty of time, and a timeout. To play for OT there is both dumb and cowardly. And even if you're playing for OT because you're worrying about a turnover, he STILL CALLED A HANDOFF INSTEAD OF KNEELING.

JonInMiddleGA 10-22-2023 03:29 AM

Well, if Klubnik changed the play that was called then there's what feels like an obvious question: did he audible at the line, or did he give the wrong play in the huddle? Assuming he has the freedom to audible there, then that's kinda one thing. If he doesn't, or made up his own mind coaching be damned then that's kind of another (and he kinda belongs under the bus).

And before anybody thinks that's a crazy question, uh, have you watched Clemson? As completely clueless as they appear offensively, I believe either is possible.

Can't we just agree there was a lot of offensive offensive football played today? The only TD in Iowa-Minnesota was because of 33 penalty yards on a 46 yard drive. The teams combined for 366 yards of offense with their QBs going 20-53 combined.
