I have been interested in a strategy game set in ancient times. So, I started doing some research and found two potential games - Field of Glory II and Hegemony 3.

So, then I went over to check Steam reviews and prices and… I already own both!

This happens with some regularity to me. I have so many games on Steam that I’ve bought and never played, I don’t know what games I own.

dubb93 06-01-2025 06:14 PM

I have field of glory 2, never played it but I’ve watched competitive MP games and it looks like something I would have a lot more fun watching than playing. Seems like a steep learning curve. Hope you enjoy it though.

Borderlands 2 and Hellslave are free to claim on Steam right now

Anyone playing Quasimorph? It's a sort of roguelike with limited inventory and a little base-building. You send clones on missions in a near-future setting in our solar system. I've avoided it for a while because limited inventory tends to grate on me after a while but the fact that you can bring stuff back to your base ship is making it work for me, at least for now.

Building a new PC this weekend and looking to give this a whirl. Was hoping it'd be out on console.

Ship Of Heroes-the spiritual successor to my all time fav City of Heroes has announced a release date at last-Aug 18. Still up in the air as to how good it will be, but there should be a demo available sometime before the game launches.

I do too (much older than your sons)

Drake 07-03-2025 10:29 AM

It'd be kind of cool if you're on the same server as my sons given all the years we spent in the FOBL together. Small world and all that.

GrantDawg 07-03-2025 02:14 PM

I was just reading about a game that got the axe under the latest massive lay-offs from Microsoft. I couldn't help but think reading it how clear it is the problem with massive AAA games today. The game, under the code name "Blackbird", was very promising according to executives that had just played a demo in March. Here is the part that got me. They started development on the game in 2018, and the hopeful release date was 2028. They said there were delays and tech problems, but wtf? Ten years? How does any game get made. That is a massive outlay for an extended time in a Stock Market driven business that needs constant increased revenue while lowering the bottom line.
I'm glad that I am a PC gamer. There are still independent companies willing to create and put out great products without the massive outlay it takes to create a huge platform console game. The gaming industry had grown so massive, and now seems to be collapsing on itself.

Mota 07-03-2025 02:37 PM

AAA gaming is built to be a money extracting tool , rather than a source of enjoyment for their customers. Buy this pass, buy this add-on, they constantly have their hands out, asking for more money from you. I'd rather buy a smaller mid-tier game, where they're not trying to force the next gatcha on you.

F2P really took over the industry a few years ago. AAA responded by continuing to charge full price for their games, but offering the same P2W features as the free option. Not my thing.

flere-imsaho 07-03-2025 04:53 PM

There's a point where a game gets so big that there's so much work (coding, art, network infrastructure, etc...) that it requires a lot of people work on it, but as anyone who's worked in software development knows, there comes a point where you have too many people working on something for development to be anything but slow.

RainMaker 07-03-2025 05:29 PM

I can't stop playing Bannerlord.

Carman Bulldog 07-03-2025 07:35 PM

I'm going to plug a game called UFO 50 which I recently purchased (and unlike many other purchases, actually started playing!).

The loose background premise is that this compilation is a recently discovered vault of games from UFOSoft, a fictional company in the 1980s. What you end up getting though is fifty unique standalone games. There is quite a bit of variety here. And while you can see the inspirations from the 80s, there is also quite a bit of modern mechanics sprinkled throughout.

The games are presented in order of the year of fictional release/development. So the first game is from 1982 and the final game from 1990. While the first release is very rudimentary in terms of graphics, controls, etc., the latter release is much closer to peak NES-era in terms of graphics, gameplay, etc.

I'm about 25 hours in and have only played the first twenty games thus far. I'm playing in order of release, although you have access to all fifty games at once, so you can sample in any order you like.

I was quite skeptical at first. Nostalgia is great, but really, how good can a whole bunch of 8-bit games be? It really seemed like a gimmick to me. But many of the games are excellent. The developers really put the work in to make each of these games unique and this is a true love letter to the 8-bit gaming era.

Right now, it's $20, so about 40 cents per game. And the vast majority are worth far more than that.

A few different sites have reviewed all fifty games, so if you want more details on what to expect, they are out there.

QuikSand 08-01-2025 08:18 AM

Titan Quest II has been in early release by invitation I think, but hints are that it drops today. The original really got me back in the day, and my son and I have been playing it on the XBox in the last 18m or so, where you can play two characters side by side in a co-op mode. Game has really held up, and doesn't need a lot to feel current - solid hack/slash type with clever character/skill/item development elements that add to the "now, i just need that one last thing" vibe that, for me, mostly propels RPGs.

JPhillips 08-01-2025 12:03 PM

I burned a LOT of hours on Titan Quest.

Arles 08-01-2025 12:40 PM

That was a fav of mine as well. Did you guys ever try that DLC?

JPhillips 08-01-2025 01:31 PM

I played the first one, Ragnarok, but not the next two.

GrantDawg 08-04-2025 06:39 AM

Fell on to a game called "Endzone 2" that Raptor was playing on Youtube. It is a post-apocalyptic city builder/survival game that looks interesting. Build a city while fighting off raiders in Mad Max style vehicles. It just hit 1.0 after being in EA for a long time, and is on sale for $12 right now. I picked it up, and hopefully will get to play around with it sometime this week. Anyone familiar with this game? I think it is very different from the original, which seems to have turned off the original players. I don't know what Endzone 1 was like, but this one looks more up my ally.

geez you must have me blocked or something :) I saw Raptor's streams on this one too-gives a good look at the game if you want to see what its like before buying. Nookrium looked at it about 10(?) months ago and will likely do a follow up now that the game is out.

Cyberpunk 2077 at perhaps its cheapest price yet $21 on Steam

Never! I just didn't recognize the name when you posted it, and in general post-apocalyptic isn't my favorite genre. This does look fun though. I picked it up and played a little of the demo. I'm trying to decide if I am going to keep doing that (I read the demo lasts hours) or just go for a game.

I can't recall, but was it on here where I read about a new (either relatively recent release or pending release) 4x game that can be played in one sitting? I think I saw the comparison calling it basically Civilization-lite that can be played in 3 hours. I Googled it, which tells me that this might be Humankind, but for some reason, I thought it was an upcoming release and not a game from a few years ago.

I'm close to wrapping up Phantom Liberty. It's honestly a borderline masterpiece. The overall state of the Cyberpunk right now compared to launch is crazy. If it launches close to its current state it goes down as one of the best games ever.

Phantom Liberty has some amazing and complex characters and Dogtown is the most interesting district in the game. The added skill tree didnt do much for my build but it would be potentially gamechanging for others.
